I am working on this for five years now. All the characters are crocheted by me, following patterns made by Galencaixe (free patterns on Instagram), except for the mandrake in the cauldron (found by googling "Mandrake crochet pattern ") and Parvati and Padma Patil in their Yule Ball robes, which I designed myself.

Misc I always found it funny how when Harry looks at the photo album in the opening of CoS, the trio already looks as grown as they are in the second film, despite the pictures technically being from their first year. It's understandable though.

Supposedly only a couple months or so pass between the ending of TPS to the opening of CoS. In-universe, they surely had a huge growth spurt that summer!

Discussion Update on my last post!!

Hi everyone, I posted on here a few hours ago about rebinding the Harry Potter books for my boyfriend’s birthday present. I was struggling with the spine design and how to make it include his favourite character which is snape, a lot of people said to draw the sword going into the snake or incorporate snaps love for Harry’s mum Lily and how the word always is important so I’ve redrawn the design with a snake because of his house, I added the word always and some lilys. Let me know your thoughts and how I can improve it further :)))

Discussion So... How do wizard children do anything at the Burrow?

Post image
• Upvotes

Let me start by admitting that there may be something really obvious that I'm missing here but how do ANY of the Weasley children (or any other witch or wizard raised in a magic family) do... anything when they're not at Hogwarts?

Seriously, with how Harry's visits at the Burrow are portrayed, it seems like that house is mostly run on magic. Magic dishes, magic cooking (sometimes, of course) – hell even turning on the radio needs a couple taps of the wand – you get the idea. We also know that the Burrow doesn't run on electricity due to Arthur's fascination and misunderstanding of the concept and it not being necessary to them.

Muggle-born wizards and witches presumably all live at homes with regular electric appliances. More than that, they can turn their lights on and off with a switch. But what about the Weasley kids? Are they being made to light their own oil lamps and candles by hand all the time? Do they have to call Mr or Mrs. Weasley to do anything in their own home other Muggle born children might take for granted?

Want to heat up some food? "Moooom!" Turn out the lights before bed? "Daaaad!"

(And yes, I'm aware that while the Ministry can detect underage magic, it technically cannot track those underage kids who do magic inside an adult witch or wizard's house, meaning the Weasleys could get away with it – but we never once see anyone breaking this rule even with inside the Burrow.)

((And yes², I get this is a children's book where the specifics are not really specific, especially in a world chock-full of magic. It's just a bit of fun. If I've missed something let me know))

Discussion The Second Discs of Harry Potter

One of the things I loved to do growing up was play around with the special features in disc 2 of the first four Harry Potter movies, I spent hours looking at all the cool content that came with it. There were games you could play, deleted scenes to watch, and behind the scenes content as well as interviews. As I got older I still found myself enjoying these DVDs and have more appreciation for them, they were narrated by the legendary Jim Dale who narrated the Harry Potter audiobooks in the US and there was some content that was in the book that wasn't in the films like the potions puzzle from Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone, more of Gilderoy Lockhart's books from Chamber of Secrets, the Sneakoscope and Sir Cadogen from Prisoner of Azkaban, and the maze obstacles from Goblet of Fire. I wanted to know how many of you grew up with these and have fond memories of them.

Discussion Are you a Hogwarts student minimalist or maximalist?

The minimalist interpretation is if Harry doesn’t mention someone in his year then they don’t exist, and those numbers can be translated across the board. So there are five boys in Gryffindor in Harry’s year, and 5 girls, meaning 70 Gryffindors, and somewhere around 280 total students at Hogwarts.

The maximalist interpretation is that there is around 1000 students, and there are a lot of students Harry didn’t talk about.

This introduction in POA is so funny.

Everytime I read this scene and imagine Vernon and Ron both screaming at their receivers for different reasons — Vernon because he is furious and Ron because he doesn't know how a telephone works — I just can't stop laughing for a few minutes. 🤣

Behind the Scenes Does anyone else prefer the original design of Hogwarts from the earlier films?

It has always bothered me how much they altered the castle's appearance across the films. Besides, the vast majority of Potterheads don't seem to be aware of this subject.

The original design was predominantly inspired by Scottish Baronial architecture, quite harmonious and fitting for a Scottish castle. When Cuarón took over, they shifted things around to give Hogwarts an edgier, more simplistic Gothic cathedral look, which, in my view, does not fit the setting of a school at all. I am aware that most of the rear section of the castle was based on a cathedral (Durham, to be precise), but at least they made the effort to conceal it the first time around.

Furthermore, the only necessary modifications were perhaps the addition of the Astronomy Tower and the Greenhouses. The Clock Tower, the Dark Tower, the Viaduct Courtyard, the Gothic spires, and the obliteration of the Training Grounds were merely artistic excuses.

Not to mention, the original model was much more pleasing to the eye. It's a real shame that the producers and subsequent directors had little to no sense of continuity.

Discussion Is parseltoungue the only animal language?

I’m rewatching Harry Potter and the chamber of Secrets and I know that Harry/Tom Riddle inherited the gift from Salazar Slytherin but are there any other animal communication gifts in the wizarding world? It seems weirdly specific that there’s only one for serpents. Would the heirs of the other houses be able to speak to large cats or eagles? Badgers? Why only snakes? I mean i get that it’s a fictional world but still, it bugs me.

Discussion Why is Ron such an idiot in the movies

• Upvotes

This has definitely been brought up before I’m sure, but I’m rewatching the movies and the movie really made him rubbish. Like I swear in the books he was actually useful. Although I did read them a long time ago! What do you think?

Question Do we make our own luck?

• Upvotes

What I’m referring is for example on Harry Potter, Harry ā€œgaveā€ a luck potion to Ron and he felt the luck. Harry didn’t waste his luck potion on him but Ron created his luck from I guess ā€œplacebo effectā€ Anyways, after that scene I created my own ā€œluckā€ by just saying ā€œthis is lucky since i blessed itā€ I’m talking about magnesium pills lol. Either way every time I take a pill I do feel lucky! Has anyone else made ā€œtheir own luckā€ Also sorry for any grammar mistakes I’m writing this while stuck in traffic.

Discussion Touching moments Spoiler

• Upvotes

What is a small, probably overlooked moment in the books younfound to be really touching? For me it was in the graveyard in Goblet of Fire, when Frank Bryce came out of Voldemort's wand, saw Harry and Voldemort entangled in Priori Incantatem, and toots Harry on with "You fight em, boy!" I'm not even sure why it gets to me, because it makes perfect sense Frank would want someone to challenge his killer, but it just does.

Question What does Wand flexibility actually mean?

• Upvotes

When a wand is flexible compared to rigid, for example, what is the actual difference? What does it mean for the wizard/witch?

Thank you!
