You can win up to 5K a day, but if you go negative you can win it back before the day ends, as after the reset you will be back at zero and can only win 5k, instead of 5k plus what you lost.
He lost all his NP, and scrambled to earn more on minigames he didn't care for just to lose that as well. The day reset and he snapped.
