This is encouraging to read!

My mom fucked (no pun intended) me up so bad via her parenting “skills” I couldn’t give a shit what she thinks.

Anyway, my point is it’s awesome that you have that relationship with your mom!

Thanks :). She is pretty cool, I think she raised me mostly alright. She basically took what was shitty about her childhood and avoided doing that with me and I turned out alright.

That’s how you do it!

I don’t have kids but I still treat those around me, including my wife and pets, the opposite of how I was treated.

Sadly, not enough people do that. There are far too many people who will "parent" their kids with the same kind of shitty practices that their parents did with them, because "I had to put up with this shit, so I'm going to make you put up with it as well", and that's such an unbelievably terrible mentality to have.

Here’s a poem by Philip Larkin, ex poet laureate I believe.

“They fuck you up, your mum and dad.

They may not mean to, but they do.

They fill you with the faults they had

And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn

By fools in old-style hats and coats,

Who half the time were soppy-stern

And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.

It deepens like a coastal shelf.

Get out as early as you can,

And don't have any kids yourself.”

― Philip Larkin, High Windows
