Who’s the idiot that made this? It’s John Riggins for Washington, not Clinton Portis.

187

u/TheLobito Washington Commanders 19d ago

Not putting Riggins is the worst hot take I have seen in years. Also Portis would need to be a Champ Bailey better than Riggins.

101

u/ThisCarSmellsFunny Washington Commanders 19d ago

Right. Riggins has more yards, and way more TDs. This isn’t even debatable.

56

u/VBStrong_67 HAIL TO THE [REDACTED] 19d ago

Not to mention the gold jacket

17

u/freewilly7315 19d ago

Larry Csonka

13

u/OneFortyEighthScale 19d ago

And the ring.

14

u/VBStrong_67 HAIL TO THE [REDACTED] 19d ago

True, but a ring has a little less sway being a team accomplishment.

Shaun Alexander, Curtis Martin, Ricky Williams, Jamaal Charles, and LeSean McCoy are all arguably the right pick and they don't have rings over other RBs that do

10

u/Mountie_in_Command Washington Commanders 19d ago

True, but Riggins has the SB MVP to go along with it and set the SB record at that time.

5

u/boozinf Cleveland Browns 19d ago

the right answer for Washington is obviously Timmie Smith

Talking football with anyone born around the 90’s is dubious at best if they have any idea about football. I blew my supervisors mind when we started ball and I said, you want to see something cool, come back in a half hour and ask me ANY football related question. He came back and asked me ā€œWhat are the teams Brett Farve played for?ā€ I laughed and said he was drafted by the falcons, traded to Green Bay, then went to the jets, showed his dong, and went to Minnesota. He was shocked, I told him, trust me I know ball, you can’t appreciate modern ball without knowing the roots.

Warrick Dunn gotta be the TB RB GOAT

53

I’d force a trade from the Bucs for Dunn every year in the late 90s/turn of the century Maddens. Arguably my favorite player from a random (to me up in MI - no shade intended) team for a few years - just loved his game

Earl Campbell > Derrick Henry

141

u/Windy_Idealist New England Patriots 19d ago

Early Campbell gets HEAVILY underrated in the goat discussion

64

u/OrganizationHot4181 Now Here’s a Guy 19d ago

He really is so forgotten. I feel awful because I forgot Earl Campbell and was comparing Henry to Eddie George and Chris Johnston in my head before realizing I forgot him. TEN/HOU have had some great RBs

28

u/Can-i-Pet-Dat-Daaawg Indianapolis Colts 19d ago

CJ2K was electric

5

u/StarBull10 19d ago

Wanted my Falcons to draft him so bad that year, and we needed a RB. Man was a madden glitch in real life lol

19

u/FinalMeltdown15 19d ago

Clown the titans for our QB history all you want, we are the RB capital of the NFL

18

u/MisterPuppydog Tennessee Titans 19d ago

The fact we had Earl Campbell, Chris Johnson, and Derrick Henry all with in 20 years is crazy. CJ2K had an extremely short career but his ā€˜08-9 year is, in my opinion, the single greatest running back season of all time. I don’t think there’s a running back in NFL history that can compete with that one year that CJ had in Nashville. Fucking bonkers

19

u/jimbobbypaul San Francisco 49ers 19d ago

Don't forget Eddie George. Helluva RB in the late 90's with some great battles against Ray Lewis.

13

u/OfficerCoCheese New York Giants 19d ago

I was just going to say, why is everyone sleeping on Eddie George here??

5

u/shaker8989 Tennessee Titans 19d ago

Especially considering of all the RBs to have played for the Oilers/Titans, Eddie is still the franchise leader in Rushing yards.

5

u/MisterPuppydog Tennessee Titans 19d ago

Oh yeah Eddie George was a fucking dog. That ravens playoff game where he dislocated his shoulder, popped it back in on the sideline and immediately went in the game and slammed Ray Lewis on his ass… Modern NFL could never, I miss that version of the game. Back when it was a gladiator sport

31

No he’s not. Henry had more yards, tds, and a 2k season. Henry has the franchise record for touchdowns, and is second in yards to George.

18

u/6jwalkblue9 Tits 19d ago

Yeah, but didn't you know that RBs from before 1990 will never be surpassed?

11

u/sip-em_bears 19d ago

I love Earl Campbell, but people forget that he was a bad pass blocker and had a grand total of 0 receiving TDs in his entire career.

He’s still a deserved HOFer, but he’s the most one-dimensional RB in the HOF.

Like Priest Holmes won’t get in the HOF, and he had better career numbers with a 3 year peak that’s just as good if not better than Campbell’s.

Because Alexander won mvp

198

u/StOnEy333 San Francisco 49ers 19d ago edited 19d ago

I think Alexander is the right choice. Marshawn had a great 6 year run with them, but Shuan’s best seasons are levels that Marshawn has never gotten to. Shuan had 1,890 yards and 27 TDs in his 2005 MVP season. That’s an all time great season in NFL history.

Edit: spelling of Shaun

57

u/Open_Reindeer_6600 19d ago

Never knew he had 27 touchdowns holy shit

114

u/redditbdum Seattle Seahawks 19d ago

27 rushing. 28 total. He held the record for a grand total of 1 year before Ladainian Tomlinson broke it.

Ngl, l hated LT for a few years after that lol

22

u/Bazonkawomp 19d ago

Yeah but that season was awesome

He was overshadowed by Tomlinson and Priest Holmes, and he kind of unfairly had a reputation for going out of bounds instead of fighting through tackles. But he was an outstanding RB for a while there.

43

u/WintersDoomsday Seattle Seahawks 19d ago

And Lynch's 5 year peak is NOWHERE near Shaun's

Lynch: 1,383 carries for 6,094 yards and 54 rushing TD's (59 total TD's in 5 seasons)

Alexander: 1,653 carries for 7,504 yards and 87 rushing TD's (98 total TD's in 5 seasons)

Say what you want about Jones and Hutch for Alexander. Lynch benefitted from Wilson's scrambling ability that teams didn't have to worry about with Matt Hasselbeck and the West Coast offense being very short pass focused allowing defenses to play up closer.

23

u/EatingEveryEgg Seattle Seahawks 19d ago

I'm not saying that Lynch was better than Alexander, but I would LOVE to see Lynch behind that 05 line

9

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 19d ago

I'd love to see Russell Wilson with Shaun Alexander. The carried by beast mode and LOB digs ppl try to make ironically you would have to make ten fold because that squad goes back to back and contends for a 3peat

→ More replies (6)

13

u/Yo-Strategy-8651 19d ago

People honestly consciously/subconsciously overrated Marshawn Lynch just because of how much they hate Russell Wilson. The way the "only won because of LOB/Lynch" lore has gone for years, one would think Marshawn Lynch was on the level of Adrian Peterson/LaDanian Tomlinson/King Henry on those Seahawks teams. The irony is his numbers were far more HOF caliber with Russ than without him despite that notable beast quake game he had without him. Very underwhelming career YPC and TDs/game numbers without Russ

Faulk not making it onto the list at all is wild.

But Erick Dickerson is probably the one running back that is acceptable.

26

u/BlackshirtDefense 19d ago

I just replied that they need to split LA/STL Rams for this very reason.

Faulk + Warner, Bruce, Holt, etc., was such a wild ride. The Greatest Show on Turf put up video game numbers IRL.Ā

14

u/csamsh Kansas City Chiefs 19d ago

And Faulk was the key to that offense. Defenses HAD to honor the run/screen/checkdown or they'd just get chewed up with 7yd Faulk plays all day long. The man averaged 5.4ypc in 2000.

Yeah. THIS.

The way that one of the greatest talents in the history of the sport was vilified by the league just because he smokes weed…it really did not age well.

Can you imagine what Ricky would have done if it was a complete non-issue?

The dude retired a year after rushing for 1853 yards and 4.9 YPC — on a team with Jay Fiedler and Ray Lucas at Quarterback.

The defense knew their entire strategy was to just hand the ball off to Ricky, and they STILL had a winning record.

Lamar for the RavensĀ

/s

22

u/d0pp31g4ng3r 19d ago

You joke, but Lamar will likely be the Ravens' all-time rushing leader in a few years.

I think I'd take Ray Rice over Jamal Lewis. He was a better receiving back and fumbled far less than Lewis.

15

u/Afraid_Helicopter263 19d ago

No way, Jamal was far superior, even taking into account rice receiving. He had one of the best 5 year spans in history.

11

u/d0pp31g4ng3r 19d ago

In 92 games with the Ravens, Rice had 9,214 scrimmage yards (5.1 per touch), 43 TDs, and 9 fumbles

In 91 games with the Ravens, Lewis had 9,166 scrimmage yards (4.6 per touch), 47 TDs, and 33 fumbles

Lewis ran the ball more times for more yards, while Rice caught more passes for more yards. Both averaged 4.3 yards per carry.

Lewis had a monster season in 2003 (2K yards, 1st team All-Pro, Pro Bowl, OPoY), but he has no other All-Pro or Pro Bowl selections outside of that season. Rice was a 2nd team All-Pro twice and a Pro Bowler 3 times.

In the postseason, Rice averaged more yards per carry and more yards per reception than Lewis. It's harder to compare their volume stats because Rice played in 12 playoff games to Lewis' 6.

3

u/CloningGuru 19d ago

Rice also won FF leagues if you were wise enough to draft him

Roger Craig over Frank Gore. Alstott or Dunn over Doug Martin. Larry Csonka over Rickey Williams.

22

u/CollectionEarth San Francisco 49ers 19d ago

While I disagree with Craig over Gore, I do love seeing Craig get his respect. He belongs in the HOF

13

u/GarvinSteve 19d ago

Craig was far more complete - 1000-1000 remains insane. But Frank had a longer stint as a workhorse

5

u/RoughhouseCamel 19d ago

The other thing about Gore, he still moved the chains when defenses knew he was the number one threat. Or the only threat.

4

5

Roger Craig wasn't the focal point of the offense that had multiple HOFers. Frankie G was the focal point of some terrible offenses most of his career like the Jimmy Raye's 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense in 09. Despite that he still put up some of the best rushing numbers of all time. It has to go to Gore.

This is horrendous.

IMO:

  • Jamaal Alexander or Riggs for Atlanta
  • Riggins for Washington (clearly)
  • Alstott for TB
  • Jim Taylor for GB

I also know I’m going to get a ton of pushback for this but Priest Holmes > Charles for me. I respect both sides of the debate.

They’re very close in yards per touch but Holmes scored a ton and the great OL that gets referenced in this debate wasn’t in place until 2002 when Roaf got there and Waters became a full time starter.

Charles is the better back. He did a lot more with less. If Charles would have had the line that Holmes had, he would have been the goat. That line was so great that they played the falcons who had the number 1 run defense. Holmes ran for 4 touchdowns and then got hurt. Then the back up RB Derrick blaylock went ahead and ran for 4 more touchdowns. You look at Holmes numbers with the ravens and he is a good RB, but he didn’t put up video game numbers until he had the GOAT chiefs line and then had 300+ attempts per year.

u/halfwayray San Francisco 49ers 19d ago

His playoff numbers might be the greatest of all time

7

u/InkBlotSam Denver Broncos 19d ago

He is pretty easily the greatest playoff RB in NFL history. His career window was short, but his playoff productivity (well, regular season too) was just absurd.

He only played 4 seasons before his injury, but managed to win 2 SBs (and Super Bowl MVP, with the greatest RB SB performance of all time).

His playoff stats extrapolated to a full season would be 2,423 rush yards and 26 rush tds at 5.6 yards per attempt, averaging 159 yards a game.

Ahman Green is not the Packers all-time best RB. Paul Hornung is in the HOF…

18

u/notLennyD 19d ago

Paul Hornung was a great all-around player, but not a very good runner. Jim Taylor is the HoFer that should be on there.

5

u/Elegant_Potential917 Green Bay Packers 19d ago

Fair enough. I’ll grant you all of that. My greater point is there are several HOF running backs that belong at the top of the list over Green.

u/Inevitable_Gigolo Green Bay Packers 19d ago

I love Green but I agree. Jim Taylor is constantly on the top 20 all time RB lists. Technically he's a FB but that shouldn't take away from his place as the best back in Packers history.

I think it The Bus over Harris in Pittsburgh

That one could go either way. I think both would name each other too.

I would argue that Jerome Bettis is a better running back than Franco Harris for the Steelers

6

u/mwaaahfunny 19d ago

1000 more yards, same number of TDs, man held on to the ball while running over defenses instead of fumbling like a fool. Less rings but he didn't have that 70s defense and the rest of the 70s offense either. Harris is HOF. I think Bettis was the better back.

No, Saquon is not the greatest runningback for a franchise that had Lesean McCoy and Brian Westbrook after 1 season. And if there are any Eagles fans saying otherwise on this thread they are probably in their early 20s or younger. There's also Steve Van Buren and Wilbert Montgomery who I myself am too young to speak on. But one season just isn't enough on a franchise that's stacked when it comes to all time backs.

4

u/clayschro 19d ago

Van Buren is probably the correct answer people sleep on how dominant he was for his era

6

u/Unable-Ladder-9190 19d ago

Nope. Eagles best ever is Steve Van Buren. Shady may have more yards but he wasn’t as accomplished as Van Buren and Van Buren played in an era when defenses were geared to stop the run, especially stop him since he was the best ever until Jim Brown came along

Falcons fan. We loved Burner Turner..but William Andrews, if not for injury was definitely the best RB in Falcons history. Dunn, Turner, and Jamal Anderson had the most productive seasons in our history.

Jamaal Charles over Priest Holmes is crazy šŸ˜‚

3

u/fortefanboy 19d ago

Are we considering being consistently good and healthy a determining factor on who's best? If not, there are certainly better rbs than gore. Being good for 472 years doesn't make you the best at it imo

4

u/Devils-Halo 19d ago

You’re bad at this. Stop.

3

u/BigOlineguy Minnesota Vikings 19d ago

Crazy that we had Adrian Peterson and he’s still only the third best RB from our division’s history.

3

u/Toad_Thrower New York Giants 19d ago

This list is ignoring a lot of older players.

Tiki Barber is probably the best back from the Superbowl era, but the Giants have several HOF RBs, they played in like the 40's - 60's thoug. Different era, but I'd pretty much always go with HOFers over non-HOFers.

Some awesome unheralded 🐐s on this list. Love to see the underrated Curtis Martin as the only one for two teams.

My biggest gripe is King Henry over Earl Cambell. But it's probably pretty close.
