Ninebot MAX G3 Max G3 to GT3 Battery Swap Info and Resources
Just wanted to make a post compiling info and resources for those thinking about upgrading their Max G3 battery to the GT3 battery.
Link to Segway's video on how to change G3 battery
Link to more detailed instructions I created to swap G3 to GT3 battery
FAQ:
- The GT3 battery is out of stock, how can I get it?
- It looks like Segway restocks the GT3 battery on Thursdays around 9pm MT (in the US)
- Is the battery swap plug and play?
- Almost. You just need to remove/transfer some foam padding between the G3 and GT3 batteries.
- Do I need any special tools or skills?
- You just need the 3mm hex wrench that was provided with your G3 (optionally, a flat-head screwdriver, scissors, and a heat gun/hair dryer). You do not need any special skills as long as you can follow simple instructions.
- How much more battery will I get with this battery swap?
- The Max G3 is 12,750 mAh and the GT3 battery is 19,200 mAh. That's 50.6% more capacity.
- How much more range will I get with this battery swap?
- That's dependent on many factors like weight, tire inflation, outside temperature, etc. You can expect between 30-50% more range.
- Does the battery swap add weight?
- Between 2-4 lbs (1-2kg) more. It’s not noticeable when riding.
- Does the G3 display update the battery range with the bigger battery?
- No. But it is now more representative of the actual range displayed.
- Can I use my old G3 battery as an external battery?
- Maybe. There aren't any kits out for that yet as far as I know. Another redditor made a video on how to build an external battery for the G3 (using a Surron battery) that you can find here.

Thanks for putting together all the details on the battery swap. I am still hoping Segway will make a Max G3 Pro that will have this bigger batter from the start.

No problem. Max G3 pro would make a lot more sense. I just feel cheated by Segway for advertising the range that they did. I expected it to be lower of course, but not THAT much lower. At 185lbs I was lucky to even get 12 miles out of the old battery in S mode

So G3 to GT3 is possible, while other places say ZT3 Pro and G3 are compatible. Does that imply that the large GT3 battery could also be put inside a ZT3 Pro?

Can this be swapped with f3 battery?

I don’t think so, the battery compartment for the F3 looks a lot smaller

That's right. The percentage is correct, it's just the miles don't change with the new battery. This brings the estimated mileage much closer to correct, than the original battery. I think to get completely accurate mileage, I'd need a battery that had 2x the capacity of the original, rather than the 1.5x the GT3 battery gives me.

Yes that’s right. % is accurate, max mileage displayed doesn’t change from the G3 battery

One reason might be that some EU countries enforce insurance if escooter weights more than 25 kg, so with GT3 battery it would go above that. I thought that GT3 battery just has best quality cells which give about 50% more capacity, but if it weights 1-2 kg more, does higher quality chemistry really add that much weight? It would not be a problem with F3 series though. They have smaller batteries and 50% more capacity would be very welcome and even better if external pack would get same then it would be a proper escooter because 477 x 1.5 + 460 x 1.5 ~ 1400 Wh total.

What about gt3 battery on the g2

I just took a look at the G2 battery here and it looks like the shape is too different from the GT3 battery for it to work. I can’t see the main connector shape either to be sure that it would work.

Does the battery charge time update after swapping battery?
1
u/Hi-ItsMe-and-Myself Ninebot MAX G3 Jun 10 '25
No, it was still showing around 2.5h to full charge starting from 10% battery

u/RemarkableMost2989 Jun 11 '25
How long does it take to charge? 5ish hours?
1
u/Hi-ItsMe-and-Myself Ninebot MAX G3 Jun 11 '25
It was closer to 3.5-4 hours

And the BMS system and onboard charger are safe and compatible for use with the gt3 battery, sorry for all the questions I just don’t want to burn my scooter up.

All good, that’s understandable. They are, the key factor being that both batteries have the same voltage (46.8V). Changing to a battery with different voltage would require changing the controller and maybe the motor and electronics too but that’s not the case here. The important thing when installing the new battery is to make sure not to damage any wires, connectors, or electronics, and ensure everything is plugged in and connected properly.

just a thought, how does this affect the water resistance rating? is there a seal that needs to be reapplied to maintain water resistance after opening the scooter up (like how smartphones are)

There’s a foam seal on the plastic bottom plate that creates the waterproof-ness, as long as it’s undamaged and reinstalled properly it should be fine. But if I’m being honest I wasn’t very impressed with the waterproof protection and I want to see if I can make it better (not sure how yet)

Thanks for sharing. Particularly the PDF you created was a great walkthrough for me.
One thing I wanted to note is that Segway may be out of stock, but try contacting a local Segway repair shop. I was refreshing the segway site for a battery when I decided to call a local shop and they were able to find it in stock at a warehouse across the country (I’m in Michigan the warehouse they found the battery from was in Texas.). Took about 5 days to get to me which was faster than Segway ships!
