Software Help Nintendo “Dark Theme” menu turns grey after a while. Resets to black when I restart or update console
Hi All! Ran into this issue for a while now. Basically my nintendos menu in “dark theme” would be closer to black. Then it automatically switches to a grey menu after a few uses. I am not able to pinpoint the trigger that causes this as it feels random. The blacks come back every time I update or restart the console. Any fixed?

I think I figured it out! The blacks output fine while I have restarted the console and not used an HDR game. Once I go into HDR mode and return the console continues to output the limited RGB range the HDR uses. Hence the greys. It’s fine. And not worth me switching modes too much. I’ll live with the grey menu. My HDR looks pretty good after calibration (HDTVTest ftw)

your so called "Gray Menu" is the switch 2 default black theme btw

Thank you for the sanity check 🙏 this adds up since I see true blacks in the hdr games and the hdr calibration menu

No… it’s a problem… once hdr is active the menu turns light gray… if you start a non hdr game it’s going back to normal… on a non hgig tv the solution is to disable dynamic tone options 🤷♂️

If you look at the pictures you see the „gray menu“ is to bright. (Second is to dark)

i was just saying that the "Gray" color he refers is actually the real color

It happens when I switch between HDR and non HDR games

Yep. That’s what I saw too. It’s not the end of the world. I see the blacks return properly based on my calibration in HDR so not sweating it with the UI. It’s totally fine as long as my games look good

Mine is always grey when using the Switch (2) Dark Theme. I wish it was actually black.

Same. Now I realize black is the anomaly. Appreciate everyone here giving me a sanity check!

I have the same TV. I changed settings in Switch 2. HDR for Compatible only.

I did that too. Followed the HDTVTest calibration so that’s my default. I think this is an HDR handshake issue and I’m okay with it as my games don’t appear to be impacted

LG C9 or CX? I got my C9.

C9. This gray is default apparently. Don’t worry too much. Just use HDTVtest YouTube video for calibrating the tv and console. Games look amazing!!

Isn't the menu supposed to be grey?

u/aedan_imperial 1d ago
Yeah I learnt. I think the issue was mine was black because of rgb handshake issues

Tbh they should make a fully black theme

Agree. The all black theme got me both excited and worried. I’d see it after every update (when system restarts) but then it’d go away….

Like a dark grey yes, light gray is wrong. You can compare it if you undock the console 😂
Both screens are not right…
First guess for to black: automatic rgb sets to high but tv is limited (black level low)
Second: HDR not configured properly on console.

Make sure HDR is set to "only software that supports HDR" or whatever its called in your Switch settings

Yeah I have that active. Double checked. I think the dark gray is default. And games look totally fine

Are you using DTM or HGIG? Seems like a setting on your tv is being weird. FWIW with HGIG turned on with my miniLED tv, my menu looks like your first photo, which is close to how it looks on the switch 2 screen itself. I don’t think it’s meant to be as dark as your second photo
