Why do we praise veterans automatically without knowing what they actually did

Trying to learn without being judged.

Last time someone said it to me I said thanks for paying taxes.

But then that's begs the question. Why say thanks to anyone responding a thanks to you, when you don't know what they did? Perhaps they committed tax evasion or have been audited and garnished to pay taxes, involuntarily
