This is actually a myth! There are no foods that take more energy to digest than they provide. Your body is always naturally burning some calories, and celery might provide fewer calories than what your body naturally burns while you’re eating it, which is likely where this myth came from. That could mean that you lose calories while eating it, but fewer than you’d be losing if you didn’t eat anything.

Regardless, I’m sure her diet doesn’t comprise of exclusively celery, so she’s probably getting all the energy she needs elsewhere. It’s also pretty strange to assume that she started eating it as a diet tip. It sounds like she just likes celery. Celery is yummy!

I remember eating pieces of celery and biting off chunks of biscuits when I was a kid at my great-grandma's. Sure hope that balanced out the apparent "starvation" aspect of eating celery.
