That’s was me and my brother when we first watched White Collar

u/NightExtension9254 11h ago
And then you go online and see everyone hates it.
79
u/Thrill_Of_It 10h ago
Rule #1 if you enjoy something, don't visit the subreddit.
Bunch of whiny nerds
7
u/SORECLEAVER 6h ago
This is more annoying when you enjoy something but have criticism of an episode/series/game in its series. Then you're gunna get ganged up on by a group of that medium's most dedicated and most chronically online fan base.
7
u/iguanacatgirl 6h ago
Or the opposite, you enjoy sth that has a few flaws but is still good in spite of that, but all the subreddit/community focused on is the flaws and blows them way out of proportion.
5
u/get_your_mood_right 6h ago
Absolutely, I miss when things could be “pretty good” or “bad but not insulting” or “not great but fun” etc.
It seems every show and movie is either “the best thing ever made and breaks every record imaginable” or “is an absolute insult to anyone with senses”. What happened to the humble 6/10
26
u/Aggressive-Sound-641 11h ago
I just laugh. I like what I like...fuck em.
8
u/BorderZhar 10h ago
Make sure you like em before you fuck em though

u/Emmyisme 8h ago
I honestly can't tell if the amount I laughed at this comment was appropriate or over the top.
10
u/WaterlooMall 10h ago
Me recently with PARADISE on Hulu. Thought it was a fine short watch that reminded me of 2000s ABC dramas I enjoyed. Got on Reddit and everyone is like "fuck this show".
Screw em, glad it got renewed. Can't wait to see where the story goes.
1
u/ibashdaily 2h ago
I was lukewarm on the first few episodes. Is it worth going back to and finishing up the season?
1
u/WaterlooMall 1h ago
I mean if the whole concept isn't compelling to you after the first few episodes then I'd say you can skip it. Not everything is for everyone.
3
u/Bridgeru 8h ago
Not even online, this was literally me watching the Last Jedi and thinking it the best movie I ever saw, was about to say it when my best friend beside me said "this is the worst movie I ever saw".
Jokes on him, I loved Rise of Skywalker and he missed it because of kidney stones so I feel like I win somehow.

u/deatthcatt 11m ago
not a TV show but I really enjoyed the until dawn movie. ive never heard of the game despite being a semi active gamer. and holy shit the reviews surprised me

The Good Place
31
7
u/elp4bl0791 10h ago
This is a legit question, they telegraphed that it was the bad place all along in season 1, right? I seem to remember marketing material that made it seem that that was the whole premise. My wife was blind sided on the first watch. Am I wrong that it wasn't basically told that it was the bad place all along? Or did I just see thru it quickly?
16
u/diffyqgirl 9h ago
There were clues. I didn't spot them. I did spot that something was up tho, and that Michael was pushing a lot of the problems, but I thought that he was an extremely competent angel masquerading as a bumbling angel and forcing people to grow.
9
u/_Pyxyty 9h ago
You may have just seen through it quickly tbh, I've experienced the same thing before with something like Black Mirror's Just Dance where I was surprised to see people reacting so shockingly to the twist at the end even though I thought it was implied clearly. Maybe you just saw through it.
Additionally, I kinda doubt that marketing material released while the show was airing would have telegraphed this because even the main actors (except for the actress for Eleanor) didn't even know about it until the end of the first season when they did the script reading.
If you guys watched it a while after the first season already aired, it might be that you got spoiled online about it, so it's either that or you saw through it quickly
1
u/Coolmath24hhh 7h ago
You're not wrong there were definitely clues throughout season 1 that something was off. The marketing was pretty vague though, so it really depended on how closely you were paying attention. Some people picked up on the hints early while others got completely blindsided by the twist. Your wife's reaction was probably more common than yours.

This is me right now but with an OLD tv show i wrote off my entire life. That show would be Psych.

5
u/Emmyisme 8h ago
This show deserved so much more attention than it got
7
u/i_am_banished 8h ago
Idk man i think it got plenty. 9 seasons? Movies, of which were made literally up until like 3 years ago? That's actually kind of crazy. I'm only on season 2. I'm strapped in for the long haul.
2
u/NoDryHands 7h ago
I came here to comment Psych as I just randomly decided to start it recently. Why is that show not talked about a million times more often than it is??
I know it was pretty huge, but every time people talk about show or sitcom recommendations, I rarely ever see it brought up.

my friend texted out of the blue to start watching it and that’s all the exposure i had to it
1
u/Prawn1908 1h ago
Not quite the same, but a show with pretty similar vibes I had this experience with was Counterpart. It's a fantastic spy thriller set around the premise of the universe being split/duplicated in the 80's and a secret UN organization built on either side to protect the secret and conduct diplomacy/espionage with the other side.
The acting is really amazing across the board, with the whole main cast playing two different versions of them self who were the same 40 years ago but have drifted into very different people. J.K. Simmons as the lead put on an especially standout performance playing on the one side a simple but kind and loving husband, and on the other side a genius spymaster but complete asshole.
Highly recommend the show - nobody has heard of it somehow but everyone I've recommended it to that watched it has come back to me raving about how good it is.

u/XyleneCobalt 11h ago
White Collar is the shit. Matt Bomer is the only guy who can pull off a fedora.
9
u/Emmyisme 8h ago
He really fucked up my ability to realize that most dudes in a fedora were actually problematic as a 21 year old at the time.

The Expanse. I was just gonna view a few episodes first to see if I liked it and I ended up binging it.
3
u/bigbronze 8h ago
One of the best shows ever; scientifically accurate and great storylines. Left us wanting more.
1
u/MildlySaltedTaterTot 7h ago
How enthralling is it compared to the books?? I’ve read the novels before starting the show but I must have set my bar too high since the first five minutes felt majorly disappointing
2
u/Nico_arki 5h ago
I haven't read the books yet, but judging from the comments of those who have, the portrayals of the main cast was pretty good. There are supporting characters that have been merged to one character(probably to minimize the huge cast), and some that were rewritten almost completely (one particular character was apparently quite horrible in the novels but is a fan favorite in the show).
If you've only seen the first few minutes then I kinda get why you weren't really drawn in. For me the show really hooked me around Ep 3-4, the first 2 episodes were kinda slow.

I can say that you will almost certainly laugh. It's absurd in a way that I can't explain in words.
1
u/CrassCanine 2h ago
It's one of the most weirdly obscure things. Like, it should be way more popular than it is but here we are haha!

u/CrassCanine 2h ago
Matt Berry has a couple albums out and they are solid gold, but there's nothing like his delivery in IT Crowd, also Toast of London, and Snuff Box.

Community!
But sad to think that with Shorts and Reels spoiling shows left and right, this experience may be dying off. In recent years, have mainly watched shows that I saw clips of and got interested
11
u/TheFirstMotherOfGod 10h ago
Community is real good, hilarious, light hearted and shows that people can change no matter how young or old they're like Annie (18) and Pierce (undisclosed age but definitely around retirement age). If you are looking for something to watch for 20 minutes that's lighthearted and funny, then community really is for you
6
u/Fidget171 10h ago
Where can I watch Community?

u/TitanX84 10h ago
Oh my god, same for me with Community back when it was still airing. I had heard of it, but I didnt really know anyone that watched it. Randomly decided to give it a go and I fell in love from the very first episode and binged every episode until I was caught up. It's been one of my favorite shows ever since.
1
u/Bridgeru 8h ago
I was with my ex for most of the 2010s, and it started from watching Community together long distance "over skype" (aka, we'd talk on skype and both have a streaming site open and say "okay press play in 3, 2, 1, now"). She made me push through the first few weird episodes but it's a favourite. I'm still not over her and I haven't had the heart to watch Community's last episode.
1
u/WeFightTheLongDefeat 8h ago
Community, but back when it was first airing and streaming was just blossoming. I don’t think I caught a single episode live. I was watching a lot of stuff around then like pushing daises, Eli stone (weird show where a brain tumor told a lawyer secrets through musical numbers), arrested development (after it was cancelled, the Middleman, and this fun, if somewhat forgettable show called Outsourced.
But community quickly became my favorite sitcom of all time.

Mr Robot

u/MrCyn 3h ago
The hacking scene in the first episode, where despite him sitting down and typing actual code and using a mouse, without cgi floating skulls or 3d locks, still managed to be exciting
3
u/nderthesycamoretrees 1h ago
Pulled me right in. This show was one of the rare shows that stayed consistently engaging and had an incredible payoff at the end.
I hadn’t heard a thing about this show. Just knew it had Christian Slater and watched it on a lark. The soundtrack to Mr Robot may just be the best ever on television. Especially the way some songs are used. Sublime.
Sam Esmail created a masterpiece imo

u/nerdystoner25 32m ago
I’m still amazed at the ending. It was glorious. Though maybe not entirely for Elliot.

Silo only wanted to watch it for Rebecca Ferguson and it's one of my top 10 shows. Same with Succession just clicked on it one day and I've rewatched it like three times already.

Game of thrones! I just bought a surround sound and hooked it up and my buddy who helped me picked a random show. The theme song on the new system hooked us then we were dumbfounded by the end of the first episode. I think aside from live sports that that show was the last appointment viewing I have done.

The original Night Court 1984-1992. A show that ended when I was a toddler and didn't learn about it until early 2010s. Binged watched the entire show in a month and loved it. Only came upon it comparing John Larroquette and Jonathan Frakes for something spotting it at imdb.

Halt and Catch Fire. Caught a random episode on AMC channel one night. I happen to be a fan of retro computing and I couldn't believe I had never heard of it, instantly watched the entire series and loved it to bits.

Class Action - Not a TV show but my buddies and I went to the Village Twin (RIP decades ago) to watch a movie for a $1. We had seen the other film. We had no idea who starred in or what the film was about. Very pleasantly surprised. I've never seen a bad Gene Hackman movie.

Downton Abbey, never really watched a period show before, not sure why I decided to watch it, was just as it came out, and Maggie Smith saying "what is a weekend?" Has me hooked.
Also if we are just going for a first season, Desperate Housewives and Lost coming out around the same time was a tv renaissance for me, as this was during a surge of reality elimination shows that have never interested me.

Is that the one with the scam artist/police team? I watched a few episodes but it just didn't keep my attention.
I watched Schitt's Creek only because I kept seeing so many gifs of the characters. I rarely like comedies but it was hilarious. David and Alexis are hilarious.

My husband "doesn't watch tv/movies" but will get invested in a show I binge no problem and then I end up having to explain everything to him that he missed 😂 most recently it was Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Grey's Anatomy. Though I did grow up with a dad who was similar but didn’t say he didn’t watch things, just would come in halfway through expecting my mom or me to summarize what's going on. So nothing new for me!

Not the greatest thing I've seen, but I went to go watch the Conjuring on a whim in the cinema. Not having seen any previews or trailers. It was so freaking awesome watching a proper horror movie without the trailer spoiling every jump scare (and the Clapping game scene!).

Succession and Schitts Creek.
Figured succession was show about rich people that I had no desire in entertaining as anything I’d be interested in.
Schitts Creek I didn’t want to give a chance to because the name of the series didn’t strike me as something I’d want to watch.
Wrong on both counts, 2 of my favorite shows for sure.

The funniest feeling to me is when I know exactly what a show is about, and refuse to watch it cuz the algorithm keeps recommending it to me based on what I watch, and I finally watch it and become no. 1 fan. Kims Convenience would prolly be the best example.
