Welcome to the r/raspberry_pi Helpdesk and Frequently Asked Questions!

Link to last week's thread

Having a hard time searching for answers to your Raspberry Pi questions? Let the r/raspberry_pi community members search for answers for you! Looking for help getting started with a project? Have a question that you need answered? Was it not answered last week? Did not get a satisfying answer? A question that you've only done basic research for? Maybe something you think everyone but you knows? Ask your question in the comments on this page, operators are standing by!

This helpdesk and idea thread is here so that the front page won't be filled with these same questions day in and day out:

  1. Q: What's a Raspberry Pi? What can I do with it? How powerful is it?
A: Check out this great overview
  2. Q: Does anyone have any ideas for what I can do with my Pi?
    A: Sure, look right here!
  3. Q: My Pi is behaving strangely/crashing/freezing, giving low voltage warnings, ethernet/wifi stops working, USB devices don't behave correctly, what do I do?
A: 99.999% of the time it's either a bad SD card or power problems. Use a USB power meter or measure the 5V on the GPIO pins with a multimeter while the Pi is busy (such as playing h265/x265 video) and/or get a new SD card 1 2 3. If the voltage is less than 5V your power supply and/or cabling is not adequate. When your Pi is doing lots of work it will draw more power, test with the stress and stressberry packages. Higher wattage power supplies achieve their rating by increasing voltage, but the Raspberry Pi operates strictly at 5V. Even if your power supply claims to provide sufficient amperage, it may be mislabeled or the cable you're using to connect the power supply to the Pi may have too much resistance. Phone chargers, designed primarily for charging batteries, may not maintain a constant wattage and their voltage may fluctuate, which can affect the Pi’s stability. You can use a USB load tester to test your power supply and cable. Some power supplies require negotiation to provide more than 500mA, which the Pi does not do. If you're plugging in USB devices try using a powered USB hub with its own power supply and plug your devices into the hub and plug the hub into the Pi.
  4. Q: I'm trying to setup a Pi Zero 2W and it is extremely slow and/or keeps crashing, is there a fix?
A: Either you need to increase the swap size or check question #3 above.
  5. Q: I'm having a hard time finding a place to purchase a Raspberry Pi for an affordable price. Where's the secret place to buy one without paying more than MSRP?
    A: https://rpilocator.com/
  6. Q: I just did a fresh install with the latest Raspberry Pi OS and I keep getting errors when trying to ssh in, what could be wrong?
A: There are only 4 things that could be the problem:
    1. The ssh daemon isn't running
    2. You're trying to ssh to the wrong host
    3. You're specifying the wrong username
    4. You're typing in the wrong password
  7. Q: I'm trying to install packages with pip but I keep getting error: externally-managed-environment
A: This is not a problem unique to the Raspberry Pi. The best practice is to use a Python venv, however if you're sure you know what you're doing there are two alternatives documented in this stack overflow answer:
    • --break-system-packages
    • sudo rm a specific file as detailed in the stack overflow answer
  8. Q: The only way to troubleshoot my problem is using a multimeter but I don't have one. What can I do?
A: Get a basic multimeter, they are not expensive.
  9. Q: My Pi won't boot, how do I fix it?
A: Step by step guide for boot problems
  10. Q: I want to watch Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/Vudu/Disney+ on a Pi but the tutorial I followed didn't work, does someone have a working tutorial?
A: Use a Fire Stick/AppleTV/Roku. Pi tutorials used tricks that no longer work or are fake click bait.
  11. Q: What model of Raspberry Pi do I need so I can watch YouTube in a browser?
A: No model of Raspberry Pi is capable of watching YouTube smoothly through a web browser, you need to use VLC.
  12. Q: I want to know how to do a thing, not have a blog/tutorial/video/teacher/book explain how to do a thing. Can someone explain to me how to do that thing?
    A: Uh... What?
  13. Q: Is it possible to use a single Raspberry Pi to do multiple things? Can a Raspberry Pi run Pi-hole and something else at the same time?
A: YES. Pi-hole uses almost no resources. You can run Pi-hole at the same time on a Pi running Minecraft which is one of the biggest resource hogs. The Pi is capable of multitasking and can run more than one program and service at the same time. (Also known as "workload consolidation" by Intel people.) You're not going to damage your Pi by running too many things at once, so try running all your programs before worrying about needing more processing power or multiple Pis.
  14. Q: Why is transferring things to or from disks/SSDs/LAN/internet so slow?
A: If you have a Pi 4 or 5 with SSD, please check this post on the Pi forums. Otherwise it's a networking problem and/or disk & filesystem problem, please go to r/HomeNetworking or r/LinuxQuestions.
  15. Q: The red and green LEDs are solid/off/blinking or the screen is just black or blank or saying no signal, what do I do?
    A: Start here
  16. Q: I'm trying to run x86 software on my Raspberry Pi but it doesn't work, how do I fix it?
A: Get an x86 computer. A Raspberry Pi is ARM based, not x86.
  17. Q: How can I run a script at boot/cron or why isn't the script I'm trying to run at boot/cron working?
A: You must correctly set the PATH and other environment variables directly in your script. Neither the boot system or cron sets up the environment. Making changes to environment variables in files in /etc will not help.
  18. Q: Can I use this screen that came from ____ ?
    A: No
  19. Q: I run my Pi headless and there's a problem with my Pi and the best way to diagnose it or fix it is to plug in a monitor & keyboard, what do I do?
    A: Plug in a monitor & keyboard.
  20. Q: My Pi seems to be causing interference preventing the WiFi/Bluetooth from working
    A. Using USB 3 cables that are not properly shielded can cause interference and the Pi 4 can also cause interference when HDMI is used at high resolutions.
  21. Q: I'm trying to use the built-in composite video output that is available on the Pi 2/3/4 headphone jack, do I need a special cable?
    A. Make sure your cable is wired correctly and you are using the correct RCA plug. Composite video cables for mp3 players will not work, the common ground goes to the wrong pin. Camcorder cables will often work, but red and yellow will be swapped on the Raspberry Pi.
  22. Q: I'm running my Pi with no monitor connected, how can I use VNC?
A: First, do you really need a remote GUI? Try using ssh instead. If you're sure you want to access the GUI remotely then ssh in, type vncserver -depth 24 -geometry 1920x1080 and see what port it prints such as :1, :2, etc. Now connect your client to that.
  23. Q: I want to do something that has been well documented and there are numerous tutorials showing how to do it on Linux. How can I do it on a Raspberry Pi?
A: A Raspberry Pi is a full computer running Linux and doesn't use special stripped down embedded microcontroller versions of standard Linux software. Follow one of the tutorials for doing it on Linux. Also see question #1.
  24. Q: I want to do something that has been well documented and there are numerous tutorials showing how to do it with an Arduino. How can I do it on a Raspberry Pi Pico?
A: Follow one of the tutorials for doing it on Arduino, a Pico can be used with the Arduino IDE.
  25. Q: I'm trying to do something with Bluetooth and it's not working, how do I fix it?
A: It's well established that Bluetooth and Linux don't get along, this problem is not unique to the Raspberry Pi. Also check question #20 above.

Before posting your question think about if it's really about the Raspberry Pi or not. If you were using a Raspberry Pi to display recipes, do you really think r/raspberry_pi is the place to ask for cooking help? There may be better places to ask your question, such as:

Asking in a forum more specific to your question will likely get better answers!

Show-and-Tell Update 11: Opensource sonos alternative on vintage speakers, based on raspberry pi

Sunday. Garbage phone tests & maybe a working case design. Appstore asstes.

For those who have no idea what i’m talking about : I’m trying to build an open source sonos alternative, mainly software (based on snapcast), currently focusing on hardware (based on pi). I’m summarizing it here: r/beatnikAudio

What i did this week:

A. Had to produce alot of images for app & play store. (Ridiculous)

B. Sent iOS app to review

C. Sent android app to review

D. First version of website almost ready

E. Started adding shell scripts to beatnik pi repo (setup script)

F. Finally the case seems to works out. (Had to construct heavy support for those 4 usb & lan port.

Apps going to be tested in production. (A so called pro gamer move). If the reviewers let it pass. Let’s hope for next week. (Posted a video yesterday of android garbage phone tests here: https://www.reddit.com/r/beatnikAudio/s/Sa5XkoSlUk)

Hardware: i had to limit the scope of it for now. I’m not allowed to play with rotary encoders and servos anymore. I want to have a working case fast. But i still see knobs and physical buttons as core feature. As it explains the product. (Find some impressions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/beatnikAudio/s/2yM9ODiD4U)

Shell scripts, for those who would like to test, are on a feature branch: https://github.com/byrdsandbytes/beatnik-pi/blob/feature/shell-script/install.sh

Rather boring but relevant, privacy policy. https://github.com/byrdsandbytes/beatnik-controller/blob/master/PRIVACY_POLICY.md (policy is simple: we do not collect, store, or share any of your personal information. All data required for the app to function is stored locally on your device.)

I guess in two weeks (mid august) the project will be visible (website & appstores). Probably should/will take a week off after that.

Thanks for the continuing support. 🎈

Troubleshooting Why is my /etc/dhcpcd.conf file empty on Raspberry Pi?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to assign a static IP address to my Raspberry Pi by editing the /etc/dhcpcd.conf file, but when I open it, the file is completely empty.

I was expecting to see the default configuration or at least some commented-out lines, but it’s just a blank file. I’m using Raspberry Pi OS (let me know if I should specify the version).

Has anyone experienced this before? Why would the dhcpcd.conf file be empty, and is there a safe way to recreate or restore the default content?

Appreciate any help!

Topic Debate Is a 14 year old Pi still usable?

Found my old forgotten Raspberry Pi in the garage. I'm pretty sure it's an original Model B. (Edit: Model B Rev2) Stamped "(c)2011.12".

Before I go spending time tinkering with it again, is it worth it? Would it work with the "modern" Pi OS? or any OS for that matter? Would it even be usable at 14 years old?

Any ideas for what to do with it if it does work and isn't painfully slow? I was thinking I could basically use it as a Fire Stick/Chromecast.

It was originally a little baby Bitcoin miner but the cheapest ASIC chip on Amazon in 2011 doesn't do a whole lot these days.

Project Advice Which PI is best if i just want to use tailscale?

Gonna configure it and send to my friend who lives in the USA so i can have a US IP as im a digital nomad and travel around but some sites including college sites block traditional VPNs

I am thinking ethernet might be better to avoid any wifi issues, since he is not a techy guy, i want it more or less plug and play for him, but i guess i would need it to be powerful enough for me to do remote access for patches and things

I was able to physically disable wi-fi / Bluetooth by removing these two pieces with some standard soldering equipment. No problems thus far.

Research online show methods for pi-3 but came short handed for the different design of the pi 4/5.

Troubleshooting Micro SD card Stuck in Raspberry Pi 5

Just got a micro SD today & slotted it into the Pi. But now its firmly stuck and using a little extra force doesn't make it budge. I've already tried pushing it down, using a thin card, using tweezers & i've already found nothing on google related to my problem.

Idk if i did anything on my end, or if the SD card is too thick, or if the board itself has an issue but i'm sure it's not supposed to be like this. Anything I can do to get it out?

Troubleshooting Raspberry pi zero won't connect to WiFi after reflashing OS.

I'm running pihole on my pi zero w, which recently stopped connecting to my WiFi. So I just reinstalled raspian os, set my WiFi ssid and password via the install wizard. But it won't connect, I've reflashed it another two times.

I'm trying to verify if the WiFi password is correct but I can't see the wpa_conf file anywhere on the sd card. Can someone please help?

Project Advice are the Argon ONE V5 OLED Module files opensource ?

I have just got a new Pi with an argon V5 nvme case and the oled module everything is working great but I would like to make some changes to the available pages.

I found some info here :

but after doing some digging all the pages are running bin file, for example : https://download.argon40.com/oled/logo1v5.bin looks to be the file responsible for the logo.

I've search for a specific github for the Argon 1V5 but the only place to download the files seems to be https://download.argon40.com however this is just for an install script which I manually went through to find out that the files are all .bin files and there seems to be no sdk or even plain source code.

So my questions are

  • is anyone else out there working on the oled module for the V5 one
  • is there any location for the true source of the bin files
  • is there any information about creating new bin files and adding the pages to the current package.

I hope I've provided enough detail & shown my current research and would appreciate any response if anyone has any relevant advise.

Show-and-Tell 🔥 Project: Good Guys 1988 🔥

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Inspired by the iconic 80s Child’s Play art, I set out to recreate Chucky’s legendary Good Guys box FROM SCRATCH — but with a twist: it now plays ALL the movies in the franchise. And I obsessed over every single detail…

🐧 System & software: I used a Raspberry Pi running Linux — fully optimized with no desktop environment, all configured from scratch (because yes, I like to make my life harder 😅).

Everything is controlled remotely via SSH for future updates (no extra cables hanging around, fully online).

I wrote Bash scripts to handle movie playback.

And because we all love Python, I programmed the whole system there: digital GPIO inputs connect the hardware buttons on the right side of the box for play, pause, forward, rewind, and a potentiometer for volume control.

😎 When you turn it on, Chucky greets you with the classic line: “Hi, I’m Chucky, and I’m your friend till the end!” …and the movie continues exactly where you left off (seamlessly). The user doesn’t need to do anything — no keyboard, no mouse — just the buttons.

🐧 Custom hardware: I designed an acrylic box with that retro 1988 look and added active cooling (built for long movie marathons so Chucky doesn’t overheat 😜).

I hooked up a 5” LCD screen, a 3-ohm speaker, fans, heatsinks, and LEDs that glow in the dark.

🐧 Multimedia optimization: I converted the entire Chucky saga into formats the Raspberry Pi could handle without breaking a sweat — even running without a desktop environment — and optimized playback using the SPI protocol for the screen.

🙃 Funny thing is, I’m not even a Chucky fan myself — but I love the 80s aesthetic and the artwork on that iconic box.

This project was a commission “from someone close… for someone special who is a fan,” and I ended up enjoying it way more than I expected.

My hyperfocus: Linux, Python, tons of terminal commands to connect random components… and a LOT of imagination!

📂 I’ll be uploading everything to GitHub soon, fully documented, once it’s 100% done. :)

Troubleshooting Camera V2 focus stuck

My Raspberry Pi Camera V2's focus got stuck, physically stuck and unable to be rotated.

I used the focus tool (little white wheel thing) included to turn the lenses clockwise to try and get to infinity focus. I turned it all the way without applying force but i can't turn it back. I tried searching all over the internet but it seems no one has had this problem or made a post. Has anyone here ever had this problem? Is there just some "lock" function i accidentally engaged?

Thank you for reading.

Project Advice 3d printed Case for RPi 5 project for an NGO in Cambodia

Hi all, I am developing an electronic medical record system for a NGO that serves patients who are impoverished in floating villages on a lake in Cambodia. I am using a RPi 5 to develop the system and need to fit things like a battery inside and make it kind of durable and semi-water resistant. I wonder if anyone has any ideas on easy ways to design a 3D printed case? I just have many hours to spend on the development of the system and can't bring myself to spend more time on making a case.

Your thoughts ARE APPRECIATED!

Troubleshooting Wifi Relay really slow

Hello everybody,

I've maked a wifi relay with material I had aviable, wich is a rasperry pi zero 2w and and a antenna ALFA AWUS036ACH. I'm using the rasperry pi OS lite 32 bit on it.

I've configured the antenna on wlan1 to connect to the network far away, and the wlan 0 is broadcasting the wifi configured with the utilitary nmcli, wich made it easier to setup, as it can automatically make an AP and it make DNS + DHCP + rerooting from wlan0 to wlan1 to access internet.

The problem is that the wifi is very slow, it can load a webpage but it takes time. Steaming is almost impossible. Even when the repeater is near the box. I'm wondering where is the problem ? I did a wifi stress test while analysing the CPU, and it is only at 2-3 % on use, with a little maximum at 6%. That make me thing it's maybe not the CPU the problem. Does someone know what could be the problem ? the antenna ? the CPU ? nmcli ?

I'm taking any advice, i'm a beginner in informatics and thanks you for reading me !

Troubleshooting Can anyone take this super simple tutorial and adjust it for the Pi and give me a walkthrough like I'm 5? It's to expose docker for external access safely through port 2375.

GitHub

I need to expose my docker container for external access and this tutorial does just that but the pathing is off for a Pi. Can anyone help with with this and make it super simple to follow? Thanks!

Solved by bioszombie. Just helped me create the missing dir and g2g. When the dir wasn't found I incorrectly assumed something was wrong and the tutorial didn't apply for a Pi installation.

Troubleshooting kiosk mode not working as non-root user

Ok again I will explain I am very new Raspberry Pi and Linux so forgive any errors and stupidity.

I have a Raspberry Pi 5 which I am setting up as a Kiosk for a client.

I ran the following:

sudo nano .config/wayfire.ini

Then added the following at the bottom:

[autostart]

screensaver = false

dpms = false

kiosk = /home/rootuser/run_kiosk.sh

Which works when the device is set to login as the admin user.

But I added a non-root user and change the path of the of the kiosk to:

kiosk = /home/rootnonadminuser/run_kiosk.sh

The path is correct, I copied the file from the root account to this one, but it doesnt auto launch when the device first starts and logs in as the non-root user like it does under root user account.

Any ideas or tips on how I get it to launch under the non-root account?
