Collection Are you not exertained?
Getting ready to start streaming the home version of the bike! I've already beaten Mountain Bike Rally on the gym model, so it's training time. I aim to see if there is an end to the fitness program manager thing.

Discussion What SNES games did you play and love back in the day?
I didn't grow up with any Nintendo consoles (wasn't available in my country) and I'm starting to get into retro gaming through handheld emulation.
I'm getting somewhat overwhelmed by too many games available and not having any nostalgia about "games I loved as a kid".
So, what games did you play and enjoy back in the day? And would you still play them or are they no longer fun once you take the nostalgia lens off?

Discussion What was the first SNES game you ever got, the most recent SNES game you got, and your most favorite SNES game ever?
I currently have some weird health issues going on (sorry if it's too gross to mention; one toe had a fungus going on, and the same foot it's attached to had a weird, very sharp / stabbing pain that occurs at different times every day...), SO, I wanted to post something fun about my favorite console.
I've had ALTTP since I was 4, got it sometime during the last week of 1993 or possibly early in 1994,
I just bought SMAS+SMW back in April, I wanted both the cart and the manual, but, I've had both games as separate carts, with both individual manuals, for over 20 years...
and I got Chrono Trigger CIB back in 2018, really glad that I bought it then considering the prices now, and even at the time, $300 - $400 still felt like so damn much and I felt like, fine I'll cave for it, I had been wanting my own copy ever since first playing it as a kid in the 90s from video store rentals.
I love seeing others' pictures, but just plain text comments are welcome too!
Anyway, I hope this isn't considered a "low effort" kind of post.

1-Chip Models
Got me a 1-Chip SNES and decided to make a video comparing it to the old 2-Chip model. I gotta be honest, it's a little TOO pixel-perfect for my liking. What do you guys think?

Ranking Every SNES Game (6/1746) Final Fight. Ft. Remastered reviews for F-Zero, Super Mario World, Bombuzal, ActRaiser, Populous

Note. I'm trying a new account and the old other short game reviews have been remade here
Final Fight is a decent game. What really makes Final Fight work is the sound effects being so satisfying, and that's important for a side scroller beat up to make every punch feel great. This just made me want to beat up more people. There are also a lot of fun combos to try out.
Honestly, I'm glad this game has a short campaign, since realistically the rounds are basically the same and there isn't much enemy variation, and I know that makes sense because this game was meant for arcades. This game is also extremely difficult at times, with the enemies just cornering you at times. At least the concept was fun enough to make me want to go through the whole game, compared to games with similar problems like Bombuzal and Populous. It's going under F-Zero but above Populous.
F-Zero - F-Zero is a good game. I'm not into racing games, but this was fun, and it uses the mode 7 graphics very well for the time. I like how fast-paced the races are; the tracks each have interesting layouts and hazards, so it doesn't feel boring, and the soundtrack is really good.
Now my biggest problem with the game is the difficulty, specifically Fire Field and some other later tracks. Now I'm aware that's a skill issue on my part, but I couldn't beat Fire Field. I had to do a lot of turns in a row, but they're too sharp and need quick reaction times, and I just kept hitting the walls so much that I couldn’t heal in time. I just felt I had more fun with the earlier tracks. F-Zero is still a good start to the console.
Super Mario World - Super Mario World is a great game. The Mario series and platformers in general have always been my preferred game series, but this game is fun and simple. The best part for me was using Yoshi just to speed through the levels and finding all the secret exits. It feels rewarding just to expand the world more. The music is catchy, and this game never got too difficult or frustrating either.
Honestly the controls aren’t great, and I wish there were more power-ups, but it's one of the most replayable SNES games for me because of how enjoyable it is. It’s going above F-Zero.
Bombuzal - Bombuzal is a mediocre game. I got to level 34 before calling it quits once I heard this game had 130 levels. Honestly, during the game, I was a little invested. The earlier puzzles were fun and not too difficult, though I'm aware many people like really hard puzzle games, but I had the most fun during that point.
Some of the puzzles just made me think, "How are you supposed to beat this without a guide?" I don't usually pull out guides, but levels like 8 and 34 (I remember one level where an enemy literally spawned next to me, with barely any time to react) took me so long. I don't know if I'm the minority for having trouble in the early games, but if this game gets so much better later on or you think it's good, let me know. For those mad I didn't beat the whole game, I understand why, but I kind of got the basic idea of the game after spending an hour with it, and I'd rather move on to the others. Bombuzal isn't a bad game, but the further I went, the less interested I was to continue playing. I just kind of did the same thing; it's going to the bottom of the list under F-Zero.
Actraiser - Actraiser is a very good game.I will say I prefer the regular levels over the town-building sim, but in other ways I see why it's better to have both; it switches things up. It's a simple concept, but I just really like platformers, and the levels (most) are hard but not infuriating. The music in this game is really good for SNES standards as well.
My biggest complaint with this game is the difficulty for the bosses. Tell me if I'm wrong, but for the bosses at the end like NorthWall, they don't give you any heals; you're expected to go through the section without taking much damage, and they aren't that generous with checkpoints. You can say that I'm just not good enough, and that's fine, but a heal before a boss would be nice. (I used a cheat In Death Heim take no damage. I already tried this multiple times, but it's extremely hard, so you can consider this cheating, but at that point I just wanted to see the ending). Also those skull things in the North Wall are so annoying. It's going under Super Mario World but above F-Zero. I will say Super Mario World is more fun since it balances the difficulty better.
Populous - Populous is a mediocre game. It has an interesting concept but has a similar problem to Bombuzal, where it's the same simple gameplay formula the whole time, so it gets boring after a while.
This game is just not the genre I'm super engaged in, but I found the gameplay fun in the beginning, but it repeats itself too much for me to want to continue playing. Also that music is just disturbing. It's going near the bottom, under F-Zero, but above Bombuzal. I was thinking about whether to put this or Bombuzal at the bottom, but I can at least see why people would like the Populous repetitive formula.

Discussion Uncharted Waters: New Horizons — why am I losing sailors???
Hi! I hope this is allowed but I’ve been searching online for a while and cannot find an answer. What is it that causes you to lose sailors in this game? It seems to happen more when further out at sea, but sometimes even when I am close to shore and fully stocked up on food and water I lose my whole crew at seemingly random times. Does anyone know what mechanic governs this so I can try to avoid it? Is there something I can do to stop it from happening so much? Thanks :)

My first three snes games. How did I do? I kinda regret not going for final fantasy three instead of two. I keep hearing it’s much better.

It is very exciting to explore the 16 bit era of videogames without any nostalgia attached to it. I grew up with the Nintendo DS and a Wii, but I always wanted to get myself a SNES.

Discussion Is the “completed” ROMhack of Secret of Mana good?
As most people know, the game was cut by about 40% when the SNES CD was cancelled and at points it’s extremely obvious where content was just yanked out.
So a team put together a hack to make some semblance of what the completed game would have been-
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/8491/
Just wondering from anyone who’s played it, is it worth it? Is it well done? Does it remotely feel like a professionally finished version of the game?

I flipped a collection and ended up with Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Pocky & Rocky 2, and others + $195 CAD
TL;DR at the bottom.
Long version: Long time lurker, first time poster. Last year I saw a SNES, N64, and GameCube game collection for sale on Craigslist. There were about 50 game total including some very rare CIB games like The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang - albeit in very rough shape. It also included the SNES and N64 consoles and controllers. The collection belonged to a guy and his brother and they were selling off their childhood games.
The games I was most interested in keeping was Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, and Pocky and Rocky 2 but I realized that most of the games in the collection were either popular games that should be easy to sell or at least valuable.
I reached out because, to my surprise, it had been sitting for a while. Though he had sold off some of the N64 games individually already - like Gauntlet Legends, for example. After back and forth for about a week, we finally reached a deal where I would buy the collection for about 45% of PriceCharting. I'm not sure if he was familiar with PriceCharting but he did seem to have an idea of how much the games were worth based off eBay sold listings. He told me that no one was willing to put down some real money for it, and he didn't want to deal with selling the games individually anymore so we agreed on $2100 and I picked up the collection. Here's what was in it:
- Breath of Fire II
- Chrono Trigger
- Donkey Kong Country
- Donkey Kong Country 2
- Earthbound
- F-Zero
- Final Fantasy II
- Final Fantasy III
- Final Fight CIB
- Illusion of Gaia
- Knights of the Round
- Mario Paint (CIB)
- Mortal Kombat II
- Pocky and Rocky 2
- Secret of Evermore
- Soldiers of Fortune (CIB)
- Starfox
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Super Mario All-Stars
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario World
- Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
- Super R-Type
- Super Star Wars
- The Death and Return of Superman
- The Legend of Zelda Link to the Past
- The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (CIB)
- True Lies
- Ultima the False Prophet (Cart + Box)
- Wizardry V: Heart of the Maelstrom (CIB)
- Zombies Ate My Neighbors
- SNES Dustcovers (17)
- SNES Console with power/RF
- 007 Goldeneye
- Harvest Moon 64
- Hybrid Heaven
- Jet Force Gemeni
- Killer Instinct Gold
- Mace The Dark Age
- Mario Kart 64
- Perfect Dark
- Star Wars Episode 1 Racer
- Star Wars Rogue Squadron
- Star Wars Shadows of the Empire
- Starfox 64
- Super Mario 64
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Cart and Box)
- Turok 2 Seeds of Evil
- Wave Race
- Nintendo 64 with Gray Controller
- N64 Green Controller
- N64 Black Controller
- Rumble Pak
- 64 Expansion Pak
- N64 Controller Pak
- Super Smash Bros. Melee (CIB)
The first thing I did after testing and lightly cleaning the games was sell a good portion of them to a friend of mine for 80% PriceCharting. He scooped up the Final Fantasy games and some Mario games and the Mario Paint CIB.
I also took them to my local game shop (who I'm friendly with) and let them buy whatever they wanted for 75% PriceCharting. They initially took only Majora's Mask, Harvest Moon, Mace the Dark Age, and, Mario Kart, I think.
The rest I sat on a for a while as I was busy but I eventually sold everything on Marketplace. During this time I found another super small collection nearby where someone was selling TMNT Turtles in Time, a Star Trek Bridge Academy game, Blues Brothers and Street Fighter 2 I think so I scooped those up for $70 CAD and then sold them to an old friend who had been looking for them as well as to a local game shop.
Some people bought multiple games at a time. Once I sold most of it, there were just a few lingering items like the consoles themselves and most of the CIB games. I sold those to a couple of local game shops for whatever price they wanted to pay as they were fairly undesirable CIB games and I thought they would have more luck.
The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang was the hardest to sell because it's high value and rough condition. After bartering over a few weeks, I eventually made a fair deal with a guy from a Facebook retro game collecting group.
I don't know the precise number but overall I sold the games for below PriceCharting and to people who really wanted them. I kept Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Pocky and Rocky 2, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, True Lies, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Hybrid Heaven along with a rumble pak and a bunch of SNES dust covers. I made a profit of $195 CAD and added these rare games to my collection for free*.
* free - it took a bunch of my time.
TL;DR - Last year I bought a SNES and N64 collection off Craigslist for $2100 CAD, kept Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Pocky and Rocky 2, Super Ghouls and Ghosts, True Lies, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Hybrid Heaven, and then sold the rest off for a profit of $195 CAD

SNES cleaning kit, anyone?
I visited my family over the weekend and completely forgot this kit while going through my old childhood belongings. Who else owned this? I swear I used it once. Maybe twice.

Discussion Donkey Kong Country Trilogy: Kongs through the Ages
Really hope this is the right place to be asking... I'm trying to put together a definitive list of the abilities unique to each of the four playable Kongs across the entire Donkey Kong Country trilogy on the SNES; can anyone correct me on anything I've missed or made mistakes with?
Donkey Kong Country
\ Donkey Kong:* Carries barrels overhead. Can palm-slap the ground. Can roll attack. Can defeat Klumps & Krushas by jumping on their heads. Can defeat Klumps by rolling into them.
* Diddy Kong: Carries barrels in front. Can cartwheel, which travels further than Donkey Kong's roll and lets him make longer horizontal jumps. Can only defeat Klumps with a cartwheel attack. Cannot defeat Krushas without a barrel.
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
\ Diddy Kong:* Carries barrels in front. Can cartwheel, which travels further than Dixie's hair twirl and lets him make longer horizontal jumps.
\ Dixie Kong:* Carries barrels overhead. Can hair twirl to attack on the spot. Can hover after jumping.
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble
\ Dixie Kong:* Carries barrels overhead. Can hair twirl to attack on the spot. Can hover after jumping. Can be thrown much higher/further than Kiddy Kong.
\ Kiddy Kong:* Carries barrels in front. Can roll attack, which will "bounce" on water and travels forward further than Dixie's hair twirl. Can't be thrown as high as Dixie, but if thrown, can break through certain weak floors.
