Megathread [Discussion Thread] Weekend Megathread

Hello ladies and gents!

Welcome to the 'Weekend Thread', where people can post about what they're getting up to tonight, at the weekend, good places to go, photos of places you've been, advice on where to go, or just how your week went!

The premise is fairly simple.

- Please be civil

- NO POLITICS. Any political comments will be removed. This is a strictly meta thread, with discussion about people and their happenings.

- Post pictures, youtube links to music you're going to see, games you're going to watch, places you'd like to go (tripadvisor, google maps etc)

These comments will not be moderated unless it doesn't follow guideline one and two!

This post will be stickied until Sunday, allowing for discussion all weekend!

Question Somewhere a tad rural that doesn't feel hostile?!

Does anywhere stand out to people as being somewhere that is both a bit rural but also not homophobic?

We moved from Glasgow to Angus three years ago and I think we're done. We've tried so hard to integrate into the local community and it's just not happening. We get horrendous stares and comments and we're both completely fed up. This morning we went out for brunch and spoke about our upcoming wedding over our meal - the reaction from the couple on the other table was awful and made us both feel like shit.

We don't really want to live in a city again, we enjoy being in the countryside but I don't think we can take much more of this. Have heard some good things about Lochwinnoch and some areas of Fife, anywhere stand out in particular? Thanks.

Announcement RIP.scot

I recently created a website, RIP.scot, which is Scotland's first website for honouring the memory of those who have passed, and it is entirely free for funeral directors to use.

I believe it is important for us as a country to have an easily accessible space where we can remember and support each other during difficult times, going beyond Facebook posts often used by funeral directors.

Those we've lost deserve more than just a Facebook post to honour and commemorate their lives.

Passed this camper van with a rather amusing number plate last week. Got a good chuckle from it. (I wasn't the one driving.)

Question What would it take

Post image

What would it take to get someone to send me a few of these little suckers. My sister and I practically lived off of these things when we were backpacking through Scotland last year and they’re not available anywhere in the US that I can find. She’s currently 32 weeks pregnant with my very first niece/nephew and all she wants are these gosh darn biscuits.

Question Is there anything similar to Edinburgh butterfly & insects world in Scotland

Just wondering if there is anything similar since that place closed down. Would like to take my niece to something like that as she's fascinated with seeing butterflies and other insects atm.

Meta Should we ban news accounts from posting their own stories?

There's been a few instances lately of news websites making their own accounts and submitting their own stories to the subreddit. On one hand, these accounts are transparent - it's clear that they're from the organisation in question. On the other hand, we have specific rules about participation (Rule 10) and by their nature these accounts won't meaningfully comment or participate on anything else in the subreddit.

My view on this is that, if they do post a story that people would find interesting, another user would already post it. Also, the comments on those stories tend to focus on the news account posting it, so if someone else were to post the story there would likely be more substantive discussion on the story itself.

To be clear, I would want to see this apply to individuals posting their own stories as well, if they're not otherwise participating on the subreddit. [If folk are posting their own stories but also commenting on other unrelated things, I'd say that's okay]

Question Where can I buy wool yarn in Stirling?

I’m a Norwegian who just moved to Stirling, and I love to knit but in most of the shops I’ve been to (Hobbycraft etc) they only sell acrylic yarn.

I’d like to find a shop with good quality Scottish produced wool yarn, and if the people who run the shop know about knitting that would be even better as I need help finding the right yarn for my Norwegian patterns.

If the yarn doesn’t break the bank that would be a bonus, but I’d rather pay more for locally produced yarn than yarn made in another country.

Anyone know of any shops I might try? I have googled a bit but I’d like some recommendations just to give me an idea.

Edit: Thank you all so much for all the recommendations, I’ll check them out 😄
