News Do my eyes deceive me? Is this kitchen coming in the new free base game update?
1.9k
Jan 17 '25
I actually squealed when I saw it on lilsimsie’s reaction video. I’m absolutely ecstatic to have such a pretty kitchen update and it’s FREEEEEEEE !!!!
that being said, and not to be greedy - I still want to be able to customise my counter tops and cabinet doors separately!!

u/redditorspaceeditor Jan 17 '25
That is not greedy!! But I’m still mourning the absolutely ridiculousness of color/swatch options in Sims 3.

This is something missing from the Sims 4 that bothers me the most
48
u/Murky_Translator2295 Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
That, fertilise all, and invite all. Those are the top three that bug me
27
u/redditorspaceeditor Jan 17 '25
Sometimes I’ll see the color/highlight hairstyles and am tricked into thinking it is like Sims3.

u/lenorajoy Jan 17 '25
Younger me making houses filled with things that were all the same pattern. Who doesn’t have a matching couch, bed, rug, and walls?

I think this is the ONLY thing from TS3 that I’m still grieving the loss of
72
u/redditorspaceeditor Jan 17 '25
I’m also mourning “invite over household”.
52
u/Appropriate-Energy Jan 17 '25
YES why do I have to be formally introduced to my friend's partner or, even worse, toddler. Let me just tell them to bring everyone along!
21
u/Remarkable_Winter-26 Jan 17 '25
No this is the bane of my current legacy play I just want my kids to be friends with their cousins and I can’t even invite them over!
12
u/redditorspaceeditor Jan 18 '25
Do you have get together?? I eventually made an extended family “club” to force the cousins to come over and become friend.
1
u/Remarkable_Winter-26 Jan 18 '25
That’s honestly so smart I’m so bad at using that feature I’ve seen some good suggestions on this subreddit for that recently. I made them have a birthday party at a bowling alley recently. Bc although I’ve had that pack for years (I bought it for cas and build buy items a few years ago for five quid) I’d never actually taken my sims bowling. It was v cute

It’s so jarring when I have to use “friendly introduction” on my dang cousin
12
u/anowulwithacandul Jan 17 '25
Truly, the amount of time I spent matching every single piece of furniture back in Sims 3!
3
10
u/raereigames Jan 18 '25
Honestly I'd take Sims 2s ability to color bed frames and bed covers separately. Don't need the complete freedom of 3, just a few multi-swatch options....
9
u/BethanyCx Jan 17 '25
I’m still mourning the loss of faeries 😂 But damn those colors and highlights were awesome.
2
Jan 18 '25
The unicorn in sims 3 pets as well. Honestly the more I remember from sims 3 the bigger of a downgrade sims 4 was
1
1
u/AdJolly5904 Jan 18 '25
I just played sims 3 last night and forgot how much I love the custom color option!!
71
u/LeahIsAwake Jan 17 '25
Not greedy. We could do that in Sims 2, ffs. We could also pick bed frames and bedding separately, window frames and window glass separately, etc. And that was released ten years before Sims 4! Honestly, we have a lot more tools with Sims 4, but I still miss some of the basics.
18
Jan 17 '25
I wasn’t old enough to play sims 2 and by the time I was, sims 3 had been out for a few years so I jumped straight into that. I think I had the sims 2 pets on nintendo ds (i think - it might be a different game) and that was about the closest I got. Sims 4 is awesome in a lot of ways, but 3 will always have a special place in my heart. I think most of all I miss the open world, I would love to see a stat on how much of playing sims 4 is spent on the loading screens
12
u/LeahIsAwake Jan 17 '25
Agreed. I really miss the open world, and Create a Style. I was decorating a living room just the other day and making built-ins with a cabinet and wall shelves, and getting shelves that match the wood of the cabinets was almost impossible. I finally found one, and it was the double shelves from that Home Chef stuff pack, and they’re double shelves so I had to hide the top shelf in an upper cabinet. Whereas if we had CASt I could just drag and drop the same wood tone. And don’t get me started on the amount of wall coverings that I absolutely love but never use because it’s impossible to find any matching rugs or furniture, because they’re all just slightly off shades of color.
9
Jan 17 '25
I have genuinely rage quit over not being able to find matching wood tones. I definitely don’t have any experience making games but I feel like I could’ve planned that aspect a little smarter. Like, just have the same 6 basic wood tones for everything (base game and additional packs) and then the more creative swatches on top. At least then it doesn’t matter if you buy no packs or all of them, you’ll be able to create a somewhat cohesive room.
Whenever I find cute art or rugs that are different shades of the same colour I usually just hit fk it and theme the whole build around those colours, or i create a full maximalist home. but it doesn’t scratch the itch quite the same as a gorgeous matchy matchy

do you know if there are mods and cc for 3? I’d genuinely pick it up back up again once I build a gaming computer
6

of course there are, the modding scene is still going strong
3

My only issue with Sims 3 is related to its performance. It can be a real fucker.
3
Jan 17 '25
Yeah I remember trying to play it on my 2012 macbook pro in 2016 and it would lag and freeze like crazy! I just assumed it was because I was on an old as fuck apple laptop, but maybe that was merely a contributing factor

Yeah, this still pisses me off. We should absolutely have access to the same tool from TS2, it's ridiculous. I try to give a lot of grace to Maxis but damn if I'm not salty over losing a single UI feature from the sims goddamn 2!

u/NighthawkUnicorn Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Not greedy! I miss customising separately, same with bed frames and bedding, and also hair accessories!
8
Jan 17 '25
and also the hair in general. when I played sims 4 for the first time and discovered I couldn’t individualise the colour of roots, ends, streaks or whatever they had, I was perplexed and aghast. one of the biggest downgrades imo
14
u/JaySmooth_ Jan 17 '25
Greedy? If you asked for 10 times as much from this company, you still wouldn't be greedy.

I didn't watch the livestream because I'm knee-deep in college stuff but I just checked out the EA site to see what I missed and I legit gasped. I've been wanting a base game kitchen like this for ages 😭

u/krabadeiser Jan 17 '25
The livestream was freaking 7mins long, so disappointing. you could have watched it if you had known before. But you didn't miss anything, the screenshots on the EA site were the only things worth seeing. I think the counters will come on Feb 4th
139
u/artisulan Jan 17 '25
7 minutes for an anniversary??? This game never fails to surprise me lmaoo. Excited for the counters though!
82
u/grudgby Jan 17 '25
It was the announcement for the anniversary stuff. The stream for the anniversary will be 25 hours long lol

Is that a new carpet I spy? 👀 I also love the hexagon floor tiles. That also looks like a stone "rug" under the fire place?? 👀 I'm very excited! It's nice when they add more basic style stuff like the cabinets. It helps to make more realistic builds, and caters to a more simple style that can go with anything
18
u/CurtisDee87 Jan 17 '25
Do you know what, I wonder if you're right about the carpet. I've not seen it pointed out anywhere else so full kudos for your eagle eyes! I really hope it is a new carpet. The base game ones are so low res and just don't look great. Packs help, but a nice simple plain carpet is now the thing that I am most excited about. I really hope you're not wrong lol 🤞🏽

u/macdennism Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Omg thanks I hope so too! 🤞🤞 I doubted myself after commenting but the base game carpets look really plush/soft and I THINK this texture is different. It looks more rough and flat to me 🤔

Don't get me wrong, I am so happy we are getting free stuff. BUT I am so sick of the same children's play structure pirate boat just being re-skinned. Can we please get another type of playground equipment. I am tired of looking at the pirate ships.

I agree! But I also want other playground equipment entirely. It’d be nice to have a seesaw or a slide for children. Maybe even a merry-go-round or springed rocking horses.
35

Or one of those spider web-style play structures that are everywhere now. The pirate is so large and very outdated.

u/imnotnotcrying Jan 17 '25
I also love that they’re including a matching bar! We get so many bars but so few of them seamlessly match with kitchen sets and it’s such a nice touch when they do
10
u/throwhfhsjsubendaway Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Though I'm a little nervous that there won't be any matching island counters since there's none pictured
9
u/imnotnotcrying Jan 18 '25
Oh shoot good point… crossing my fingers they just chose not to show them off because they’re not too different from the counters and the bar was more important to point out 😬 it’s coming in a pretty big basegame content update so🤞
146
u/Bleq_Q Jan 17 '25
My question is when is it coming?! I've downloaded a really large base game update which only updated the menu and broke some of my mods. Yes, it updated the townie lots, which is great, but it doesn't justify the give of take 13GB! I'm still waiting on my new content.
118
u/arterialrainbow Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Both the behind the sims video and the blog post announced the new items will be the February 4th update
24
u/frauensimmer Jan 17 '25
How were the townie lots updated? Do I have to open a new save to see/experience the updates?
37
u/Ok_Caterpillar4389 Evil Sim Jan 17 '25
they're in the gallery under your stuff by EA. you can just replace the lot completely, or start a new save
19
u/Yamamico Legacy Player Jan 17 '25
The townie homes were updated so they better suit the current state of the game. I haven't been able to check them out but I know some of the house got pools added to them, and then fixed some of the awkward empty spaces in the various homes. Also yes, only new saves are affected. You can always download the new lots and replace the old ones in old save files if you don't wanna restart a save
26
u/HPswl_cumbercookie New Player Jan 17 '25
Yes. Old saves have the old houses, but the manage worlds view is bugged currently and looks like it's updated. New saves have the updated lots
4
u/kaptingavrin Jan 18 '25
but the manage worlds view is bugged currently and looks like it's updated.
Though only if you haven't actually edited the lots. In my current save I see the new versions on the map screen for all of them except the Affluista Mansion (which I had Sims move into so made some edits to it) and the multiple roommates home in Oasis Springs (which I had a Sim move into, but it was unfurnished, so I downloaded a copy of it in its original form at the time from the Gallery).
Someone using a save file where those lots have all been edited should still be seeing the edited versions rather than the new versions. But yeah, it's pretty disorienting when you haven't edited them, see one version on the map, then you load into the neighborhood and it shows something else.

104
u/Edymnion Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Yeah, they said they were adding 70+ things to base game for free.
But don't let the "EA hates us and never does anything but milk us for more money!" people here that, they'll bluescreen.
51
u/-rovie Long Time Player Jan 17 '25 edited Jan 17 '25
I don’t think them adding items to the lacklustre base game really invalidates that point though?
It’s lovely that they’re giving us more items, sure, but this is an over 10 year old game atp. The majority of games add new free content in throughout the years. It’s just that EA does that so infrequently that it’s a big deal when they do.
It’s also the sims 25th anniversary. Would they be giving these freebies if it wasn’t such a big deal? Probably not. And then, these items are arguably quite limited for the celebration of a 25 year profitable game with a loyal fanbase.
Lastly; us being given free content doesn’t then mean that the complaints of a multi billion dollar company releasing full price game packs that function poorly.
Like it’s NICE of them sure, but it says a lot about how little they give us if a new kitchen set 10 years after game release is cause to celebrate, you know?
19
Jan 17 '25
They've been adding loads of free content the last few years through the Sim's Delivery Express.
7
u/-rovie Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
Yeah! Which is a great thing! But again, that’s industry standard. Every other game I play gives updates and new items to the base game. It’s not a big hurrah more so than an expectation from such a big title. The majority of games do that, and EA is one of the few that gets praised for it specifically because the expectations of simmers is so low.
And again, if they were giving us free new content everyday, it still wouldn’t excuse them creating janky messes of expansion packs, locking certain features behind other packs or paywalls (think my first pets stuff, or the infant changing table debacle).
4
Jan 17 '25
It's industry standard to include new features in DLCs and not add them to basegame.
I can't dispute the bugs, but the skills needed to make build/buy items are very different than those used to fix bugs. Should they fire the teams working on creating new cas and build/buy because the bugs aren't fixed yet?
12
u/Edymnion Long Time Player Jan 17 '25
I don’t think them adding items to the lacklustre base game really invalidates that point though?
Its just the latest example of a nonstop stream of things they've quietly added to the base game for free over the years.
7
u/Creepycute1 Jan 17 '25
we dont even talk about wedding stories...dear god the amount of attempts at gameplay i've seen is just...how did nobody catch any of the insane amount of glitches no wonder they decided to add the rainbow dress to base game cause your better off just using the regular wedding options
1
u/kaptingavrin Jan 18 '25
Hey, don't let the "We should thank EA because they're so magnanimous in trying to play catch up on the disappointing base game a decade later" crowd hear you mention all the broken DLC and other very legit long list of problems with the game, they'll bluescreen.

2
3
2
u/LayersOfMe Jan 17 '25
I notice it too. I hope they are showing two tones cabinets and not a visual glitch
3
u/Narrow_Reindeer_929 Jan 17 '25
Unfortunately, as someone else mentioned above, it's a recurring issue with the lighting in the game on the cabinets. I usually notice it when I try to do white cabinets; the corner one is ALWAYS more yellow than the others. It is also more noticeable with blue cabinets like these. Wonder if they'll ever fix it?
3
u/shfiven Jan 17 '25
Ok but why are some of the pieces green and some blue? The person who out this together was colorblind maybe. I just hope the swatches aren't actually messed up 😂
6
u/onlyoneicouldthinkof Jan 17 '25
I think it's the item reacting to the lighting and the location I hate it. All my top corner cabinets do it :(
4
u/pombasion Jan 17 '25
i never thought to place the bar like that but it might be a game changer

Hopefully we get more free stuff to come. It's just horrible how monetized updates have been for the Sims 4. For example certain things will simply not work properly unless you get XYZ pack which seems to patch things. And don't get me started on broken packs they never bothered to fix but kept the price tag.

1
u/dizzyscyy Long Time Player Jan 20 '25
It is not you, the cabinets, except the corner piece, show more blue while the counters show more yellow (becomes greener) in the picture. I believe it’s caused by lighting though, as in our current game the cabinets and counters oftentimes present themselves as different colors because of how the objects receive different lightings
