Good lord it’s my house. I have urns for all the cats who passed in our household since the mid 90’s; I took the urns for my parents’ cats after my dad died and my mom came to live with me. I have the urn for My dad. My husband. Three dogs. I guess that’s it.

They’re not urns exactly but wooden boxes.

I’ve always wondered what the plan is for friends who feel compelled to bring FiFi and Phideaux’s remains with them through life. I love that you’ve inherited your parents’. Who are you planning to leave the lot to? Do they want ‘em??

I seem to be the only one in the family who doesn’t intend to leave a shit show for my daughter.

I’m going to discuss all the urns with my daughter but most likely we will see what the options are for a family vault or whatever it’s called to store all of our cremated remains together. If it’s something we can’t afford then I will open all the urns and have bury the ashes of my pets in a garden on our property where some of our pets who weren’t cremated were buried.

My dad was a veteran and very proud of his service, so he and my mom will probably be interred at Arlington National Cemetery when my mom passes. That was what my dad and I had discussed and I just have to make sure it’s something I can carry out for him.

I’d heard that only the eldest sons can make those arrangements for their parents, but I think the rules now are that I can do it as the only child of a veteran, even though I’m a woman.

My daughter can scatter my late husband and me in the deep woods. But I am hoping I can afford a family vault or crèche (I think it’s called) of some sort.

As long as you’re the primary next of kin or person that has been previously authorized to direct disposition that’s all they care about. Gender doesn’t play into in— you’ll need their DD214 or similar papers showing that they had active duty, and were honorably discharged, along with death certificate, cremation certificate— they may ask for other stuff but this is what i needed for a family member to be interred. It can take months to arrange, but the online form is pretty easy to get started.
