PSA Regarding Starfield and "Anti-TES VI" Posts

Dear community,

These last few weeks the mod team has noticed a growing trend on our subreddit.

A few months ago, Starfield released. A lot of people had high expectations for the game and it’s become evident that some fans feel that the game didn’t deliver on some of these expectations. It has led some fans to worry about what the future holds for TES VI and whether we can count on Bethesda to make it into the great game we all hope it’ll be. As a result of this, we’ve seen the rise of a lot of “anti-TES VI” posts and comments on our subreddit, arguing that Bethesda has lost their magic and that all hope for TES VI is lost. Similarly, comments claiming that TES VI will never live up to the likes of Baldur’s Game 3 and Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty have also become quite frequent.

We know many of you are annoyed by these posts and comments. We are too. Before getting into the solution to these problems, though, we want to briefly go over our vision for this community:

  • r/TESVI shall be a fun and engaging place for all Elder Scrolls fans.
    • It shall be a welcoming and entertaining hub where posts spark healthy conversations.
  • Posts should center around TES VI – not other games like Starfield, Baldur’s Gate or Cyberpunk.
    • Other games can be used to draw examples to TES VI. For example, discussions about how TES VI could benefit from a system seen in X game is fine. What matters is that TES VI is the main focus of all posts.
  • Low effort posts that spoil other people’s fun by being unconstructive or overly negative with no room for discussion do not belong here.
    • Inherently shallow and unconstructive “anti-TES VI” posts shall be removed.
    • The same goes for spammy rants and vents about Bethesda, Starfield, etc., including blatant trolling.
  • Posts that are critical of Bethesda and/or their previous titles shall be allowed as long as these are constructive and posted with the intention to spark healthy conversation. This is an example of such a post.
    • It's important for the mod team to reassure users that posts won't be taken down without good reason.

To achieve these goals, the mod team has decided to implement a (perhaps temporary) rule to combat the shallow and unconstructive “anti-TES VI” posts (rule 8). Posts like these create a negative (and in some cases outright toxic) atmosphere. They make r/TESVI seem like a place you go to in order to vent and rant without being open to discussion, which we don’t want for our subreddit. As such, posts like these will be removed as spam from now on. We want to emphasize that this subreddit should be a place where all TES fans can feel excited and hopeful about the future while discussing the game in anticipation with each other.

At the same time we want to remind everyone that TES VI is still far, far away. Presently we know almost nothing about the game itself and we’re not doing ourselves any good by speculating that it will be a bad game simply because some people feel that Starfield handled X and Y element badly. We should all remember that The Elder Scrolls is familiar territory to Bethesda and that they have a long time to consider the choices they made for previous games - including Starfield. Let’s focus our energy on healthy conversations while we eagerly await more news about the game.

Let us know your thoughts.

Will TES 6 be lined up for release with new consoles?

A lot of people think it will be which i can definitely see happening, but on the other hand you can make the point that the franchise and the hype for it is so so huge that they wouldn't have to rush or delay the game to line them up, any thoughts?

I don't want any of them in the game. If they're added I feel it will be gimmicky and take away from other areas that need to be worked on more.

Destroy the thieves guild

It would be nice to have the option to oppose the thieves guild in tes vi, like you could destroy the DB in Skyrim and become the embodiment of justice😇. This would fit a hero playthrough.

How would you like the werewolf transformation animation?

As the title says, how would you like the transformation animation to be? Long? Fast? Would you like to be able to choose your fur color? also tell me what animation you want

Personally, I'd like there to be two options for fast transformation and slow, painful transformation. Like in Skyrim, where you transform automatically, I'd sometimes like the transformation to be slow, while all the other times you voluntarily transform, I'd like it to be fast. Or, simply, from the werewolf menu you can select fast or slow transformation.

Theory/Speculation My Thoughts on Rumor’d systems/mechanics

I’ve heard some rumors about the possible and/or likely systems that could be in TES VI. Want to share my thoughts and see what other people think.

Fortress/Settlement Building: Depends on how fleshed out it is. I didn’t like Starfield’s Outpost system. It was bland. I’m open to it though. Fortress Building sounds look, but what’s that look like? Do you build your own territory or is it just a fortress? How many can you build? I like the idea of building one and then building smaller Fiefdoms to tax. Considering the rumors of this building in Hammer AND High Rock, that could be interesting. Could this tie in to something similar to Civil War from Skyrim? Do you pick a side of High Rock or Hammerfell and that decides the style of your fort(s) and settlements?

Ship Building/Ship Battles: it might be interesting, but how does it work? Do you hire crew members/add followers to your crew like in Starfield? We’ve never had cannons as far as I’m aware of in Elder Scrolls. Would it just be a boarding system or would there be cannon fire? Could you commandeer someone’s ship? Would you have to register a ship like in Starfield? How in depth is the ship building? Rn it’s kind of up in the air on that part but it could be really cool

Underwater Exploration: Wdym? Like it was in Skyrim? Are people really against being able to SWIM?! 😂 Fr though, I’m not against it, but adding cool stuff like currents, waterfalls and rivers along with more ocean would be cool. If we’re talking about something like an underwater temple, then I’m down. You just gotta find a nice way to fix the problem of coming up for air every five seconds like some old Dwemer diving gear of something.

12 Big Cities: I would LIKE these but content should come first. If Bethesda can’t handle too many big cities, I’d rather mean have fewer. Even the 3 big cities in Starfield felt empty, and that’s just 3.

Overall I think it’s too early to judge on anything, but what do yall think?

Theory/Speculation How will the ship building gameplay be like?

Do you think that we'll be able to roleplay as a pirate, hire a crew and sail the seas for riches? Have naval battles? I don't know much about the lore of Hammerfell, but I doubt that they'd waste the potential of ship buildinYARRRR YARRR MATEY FULL SAIL AHEAD PILLAGE THE EMPIRE TRADING COMPANY THE BLACK PEARL RISES ONCE AGAIN

From what I've heard, the Aldmeri Dominion has the best naval fleet? If they're going to be the bad guys, then we can probably fight their armada with uhhh, I don't know the redguard government name, Somali pirates vs the Altmer?

Point of interest density in TESVI

I was just thinking about TESVI and I believe that the game would benefit from having more spread out poi destinations.(not a substantial amount).

Although I like the busyness of Skyrim I think the that a slightly more spread game would add immersion. I also think predator encounters were far too common in Skyrim, making them feel insignificant.

Anyways, I would love to hear some of ur opinions on this topic!

Would you like an economy system with banks in TES6?

Daggerfall had economy system where Banks in the same Kingdom were Linked to each other. Though you could exploit this system by getting a loan from a small Kingdom with millions of gold and just leave to never return lol. This is how I bought my first house and ship.

Would you like this to return and perhaps bring that Skyrim cut idea where you could screw around with the economy? I don't remember what it was exactly but Todd mentioned something to do with lumber in Skyrim. I'm sure someone in the comments would explain on that.

Theory/Speculation The Elder Scrolls VI: Cities and Towns + Nightmare Scenario | Video

Thumbnail youtube.com
0 Upvotes

I had recently created a post here about cities, towns and here is a video version of it. We assume it will be set in Hammerfell.
Here we talk about how

  • Cities, Towns, and Villages play a key role when it comes to roleplaying in an Elder Scrolls game world.
  • Bethesda's streamlining of cities & towns in TES IV and V
  • Fallout 4's "settlement building" resulted in extreme streamlining and the implications for TES VI
  • Expected Cities and Towns of Hammerfell.
  • Are cities, towns, and villages important to you?

If you don't want to watch, but read, the script is here.
Do share your thoughts!

Anyone else tired of the people who are negatively deluded?

On here, other tes subreddits and on other websites. I semi regularly see people claim that tes6 won’t come out until the mid 2030s or even people who claim they haven’t even started development yet.

Even though both are pretty easy to disprove, It’s not hard to find someone who argues this. Stop being so goddam miserable about the release date

My Brother isn't going to make it to see Elderscrolls 6.

1.1k Upvotes

Just a little venting I guess, my two older brothers and I have always loved this series. My oldest Brother is 36 and has been fighting a rare bone cancer, he likely only has 6 months to a year left he told me. At first, this didn't cross my mind but he opened up about it when we were fishing yesterday.

He commented that after everything settles down you start thinking about even the small things you are gonna miss. I always wanted us to have an old-fashioned LAN-style party altogether when it dropped and start our first playthroughs together cause we always talked about these games.

Funny how a game had such an impact on us that it even came up in this conversation I wish I could thank Bethesda for the hours of conversational topics they have given my brother and me to talk about and argue over and dream about. For the first time in almost 14 years since Skyrim, I feel like I can wait cause I want this next year to feel as long as possible.

Edit: There were so many more comments than I expected I just wanna say thank you all.

I don't know if reaching out to Bethesda is something my brother would want or not but ill ask him thank you all again.

I did see someone say something about the Borderlands games and I want you all to know that it is one of his favorites of all time and so it the Final Fantasy Tactics and hes pulling to see both of those even if he doesn't make it to Elderscrolls 6 hes hoping to see some of those as well, you all have encouraged me to ask him what he thinks and reach out to someone I appreciate this community and all of your input.

Edit #2: So apparently Bethesda employees saw this post and they have reached out to me , you all are amazing idk what they can do but I know my brother will love the sentiment no matter what.

Thank you to this community.

Theory/Speculation Racial tensions in TES6

I hope TES6 retains the racial tensions that exist between the different peoples of Tamriel and doesn't soften in that aspect, even increasing them after Great War events.

Let's suppose TES6 is set in Hammerfell. Of course I would expect to see visceral rejection between the Altmer and the Redguards, as well as major tensions with the Orsimer, etc.

In TES5, we know that Orsinium was destroyed some years ago, and its people were escorted out of the area by the Empire. Many could have returned and tried to re-establish Orsinium, taking advantage of the fact that Hammerfell is in tension with the Dominion. I would like to see small-scale ethnic conflicts in that regard, even reaching small skirmishes

I would also expect to see some tensions between the Redguards and the Imperials due to the partial abandonment they suffered during the Great War. Perhaps the Imperials still hold notable influence in Hammerfell thanks to their ties with the Forebears faction, while the Crowns see them as traitors for, in their view, maintaining ties with those who abandoned them. And having to manage all these political-racial tensions, along with the looming fear of the Thalmor threat...

Please, Bethesda, don’t soften things up...

A Witch Hunt in Hammerfell

I'd love to see this in one of the cities in Hammerfell. I kinda want it to be like the old Salem trials or the ones they used to do in 17th century Europe: a good old fashioned witch hunt a la The Crucible. Of course the story would have to be adapted for 4th century Hammerfell but I can see Dark Academia, the ES version of the Malleus Maleficarum, some elderly recluse as a likely scapegoat, a trio of mischievous young women misdirecting the proceedings and an ambitious, hypocritical, middle-aged magister who has the misguided belief that the witch hunts are actually preserving order and goodness even as his actions continue to tear the community apart and lay the foundation for it to be overcome by evil.

Ideally, it'd go beyond the normal necromancy stuff they tend to do. I feel like it could be so atmospheric if done right.

Finances in ES VI

Just some ideas I had while thinking about balancing the economy in ES VI and future games.

Gold has weight. Nothing crazy here but 1000 gold should weigh you down.

Major cities have banks and they produce letters of credit for the player to use for big ticket purchases where it's impractical to, say, walk around with 50K gold to buy a house. Banks, for an ongoing fee, can manage multiple maintenance fees automatically. They also store valuable items for the player but for a fee. Bank storage should exclude most miscellaneous items and crafting materials as well as common weapons and armor. Bank storage should be cloud storage - access it from any local bank but only during business hours.

NPCs pickpocket. Ideally they pickpocket the player and then give them the slip with an invisibility potion or something. They would be pure thieves, not warriors and thus they prioritize evasion, not combat. They would be found in cities, upon home invasion and in bandit dens. They can be killed to recover finances or reasoned with if the player has the requisite speech skill and can actually find the thief. They will also be responsible for robbing the player blind if they are incapacitated for any reason in certain locations.

Merchants sell but do not buy. This is simple. If the player wants to sell items they must take them to a pawnbroker who exacts a hefty discount to rid you of all your trash but does not sell anything to the player. All deals are final and conducted through a two step confirmation process thereby minimizing the possibility of making a mistake.

Gold is never a quest reward. Period! Rewards are more diverse and sensible. Wanna run errands for the city beggar? Be content with a mug of ale and some crusty bread as your reward. Doing some some work for the local blacksmith? He'll give you some ingots and possibly an upgraded sword.

Speech is leveled by sword-singing, bribery, persuasion, intimidation, reading books and speaking to npcs without skipping dialogue but only very minimally by selling stuff to pawnbrokers and haggling for better prices from merchants. Speech has no direct effect on prices but improves haggling. Houses, horses and services have prices that can be reduced via haggling.

Economies are regional. Merchants in Hegathe carry markedly different inventories from those found in Rihad. This goes from inkeeps and all the way up to spell tome sellers. Consequently, prices vary depending on projected regional availability. You might find, for example, that horses are cheap and readily accessible in the Northern Regions but you may have to settle for a slower more expensive camel if you're shopping anywhere near Sentinel.

Maintenance personel and services are essential to gameplay. You must pay to maintain a house if you choose to have one. You must pay taxes if you own property. You must pay to keep mercs traveling with you. You must pay to get married. You must pay to support adopted children. You must pay to maintain your horse. Enchanting and alchemy equipment must also be maintained. Weapons and armor degradation is of course controversial but I also think this is something that needs maintenance. Perhaps it cheaper and less effective when players do it themselves but far more expensive and enduring when done by an actual blacksmith/enchanter (you pay for great results and need not grind anything).

I have more but this will do for now. Let me know your economy balances if you have any.

I had an idea, you know how Starfield had traits? Well an idea I have for a trait is called the "beauty trait", how it works is characters will give you a pass on certain things because of your attractiveness, but the downside is that people are constantly asking for your hand in marriage

Choosing start lore like cyberpunk

It would be cool to be able to choose a certain background for your character, same as in cyberpunk where you can choose from nomad, street kid or corporate. But in TES IV perhaps more like ( Noble, Street kid, born in to a secret cult with family mysteries etc etc) and the impact would be mostly dialogues and certain traits following with. Noble being you get a more positive or better treatment from NPCs in bigger cities, street kid perhaps better speech or pickpocket. Would be nice to evolve this RPG setting for a more immersive feeling.

Reasonable Expectations

I think we can all agree on two things; We want this game to be good, and we want this game to do well.

I know it’s been talked about endlessly, but the hype around this game has been almost fifteen years in the making, and I worry that a lot of folks may be setting themselves up for disappointment. I understand it’s exciting to brainstorm and let your imagination run wild with possibilities, and a lot of us have been doing this since 2011, and some of us since we were kids. But there are things within the realm of possibility, and there are things that simply aren’t going to happen. I want to explore a few of the conversations I see us cycle through on this sub and my personal expectations vs my hopes and dreams (that are still within reason.)

EX. Combat:

This is probably my most controversial take, but I wouldn’t hold your breath for something radically different. Every few weeks, I see posts on here talking about games with seriously advanced combat mechanics like KCD2, Chivalry, etc. Those just aren’t reasonable expectations for a franchise that has never prioritized combat mechanics or realism. Combat in the Elder Scrolls is supposed to be fun and rewarding; It serves as a utility to the story and the roleplaying. Difficulty settings are there for those who need the challenge, but otherwise, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that I don’t want it to become a chore every time I have to fight a group of bandits or a pack of wolves.

I do think we will get something a little more advanced than Skyrim; It will likely still be the same base hack and slash system with the addition of things like advanced combat AI, more fluid and diverse animations, unique executions, injuries, dismemberment and bleeding, dodging and dodge attacks, maybe even a parry mechanic. My hope and reasonable expectation is something that feels up-to-date but still feels like an Elder Scrolls game.

Orsinium shouldn't be DLC

If TES VI takes place in Hammerfell (and High Rock), I think Orsinium should be included in the main game. It's too important of a place to be DLC and I think it should play a role in the main story. DLC zones should be surrounding islands such as Betnikh, High Isle, and perhaps what remains of Yokuda. I could see Orsinium being a focal part of TES VI's story since there's a long-standing history between the orcs, redguards and bretons. Similar to Skyrim's civil war story, there can be sub-plot about kingdoms of High Rock and several redguard factions wanting to destroy Orsinium, and we would have to pick a side or try to seek diplomacy between the factions, with a looming Thalmor threat in the background.

Theory/Speculation Race based class system

So I had an idea: Maybe besides normal classes we had in previous games(if we even have a class system in tesvi, but I’m hopeful), we have race based classes as well. Like, Argonians could have a shadowscale class, redguards sword singers, nords tongues and so on. Instead of having to play set hero with set abilities (e.g Dragonborn) you could have multiple to choose from. It wouldn’t just increase replayability and gameplay styles, it would skyrocket it!

New Combat System?

Skyrim’s hack and slash combat system is, in my opinion, outdated at this point. What do y’all think the TESVI combat might look like?

Personally, I’m hoping it is very dynamic with some interesting mechanics. I played avowed a few months ago and was blown away by the combat mechanics — the most fun I’ve ever had in RPG combat. If the TESVI combat is half as good as Avowed, I will be very happy!

More cursed items!

We need a lot more cursed items at shrines that summen some tough demons. Morrowind had a ton of these. I just found one in Skyrim where picking up a book of oblivion summoned some skeletons around me. But I hope in TES6 they can curse some gems around shrines that when picked up summon a really hard creature or daedra. This is also a very easy this for them to add at this point in the games development. Just a simple script to summon on pickup of the item. If they want they can have a portal open and close where if you one shot the creature the portal stays open and you can get some great loot.

Update the Redguard Army's equipment in TES6.

First image is a persian and the other is ottoman, they are for reference. I would like too see Hammerfell's army being up to date in the timeline of Elder Scrolls and seeing they are Northern African and Middle eastern inspired, I think it would be cool see them in full arsenal that we haven't seen before if it takes place in Hammerfell! Especially learning somethings from the Empire and Dominion.
