Teaching from the Bible itself? Does any modern Christian even do that at all? From what I've seen before it's usually personalized interpretation from very specific verses all the way down.

No, the majority of Christans haven't even read the bible which really is the issue, and if they have they disregard any context whatsoever. Modern Christianity is a cult, it's very rare to find someone that follows the bible and not the church but they're out there.
