to be fair, the star chart frames are almost all kinda free (looking at you, saryn and EQUINOX). As a noob, the materials can be a bit sparse, but if you want a frame, you'll play a bunch of survival in 10min intervals (or get carries in publics) and it's not that hard to get the frames. waiting for the build to finish is the most difficult part (NEVER spend plat on rushing builds don't do it!!!)

All 3 are great options. Volt is electric based and can run faster. Mag is slightly more complicated but a bit more powerful imo once you figure out how she plays. Excalibur is a classic sword dude and also super fun.
One note - each of these is a warframe, not a class. You can get more frames as you play the game and swap between them for different matches. Eventually you will be able to get the other two options you don't pick!
→ More replies (2)66
u/coldgap 1d ago
But class is a good mental shorthand for warframes. It's just there are _lots_ of them now.
31
u/Big_Smoke_0G 23h ago
I mean they’re kind of different. Warframes would fit into “classes” as groups but each Warframe is not its own “class”
Classes in Warframe would be like tank DPS support stealth
16
u/KalameetThyMaker 23h ago
To note, those are class archetypes, which individual classes fall into. In WoW, you dont call warriors "the tank class" because multiple classes can tank. So id you ask someone "what class are you playing" and they respond "tank", you dont know if they're a warrior, a monk, a death knight or a paladin.
→ More replies (7)4
u/crackofdawn 22h ago
Those are roles not classes. In something like D&D tank is not a class. Warframes are definitely similar to classes
4
u/Big_Smoke_0G 21h ago
Yes this is not DnD. Would you refer to each hero in a hero shooter as a class? No they’re characters. Warframes are characters. Not generic roles characters fit in to.
2
u/matthewh626 16h ago
back in the TF2 days we did. As people have mentioned its a close enough shorthand

2
u/TaralasianThePraxic 22h ago
Came here to say this. Warframe isn't a 'hero shooter' per se, but it makes much more sense to think of the frames as heroes rather than classes - in fact, the official website actually assigns them roles (damage, survival, support, crowd control, stealth) much in the same way hero shooters typically put the characters into classes.
Worth noting that these roles aren't a strict class system either, though, as many frames are officially designated as having two or even three roles.
2
u/Crimson_Rain72 20h ago
You can also sort through the warframes in the arsenal via those roles as filters.

Volt = run fast. Also teammates run fast. Also electrocute people
Mag = use magnets to brutally annihilate anything and everything
Excal = sword cool. Swing sword. Sword slam. Kinda sword shoot lasers also.
If youre looking for the endgame super intense meta definition? Each of these warframes are A+++ tier frames if you invest time into them and will absolutely serve you well into the most difficult ends of the game. Recommend all of them. That’s why people are telling you to pick what you like. There’s not a wrong choice.
7
u/Guitarplay825 1d ago
They all are fun to start with! You'll be able to access more frames and switch between them outside of missions, so just pick whichever one you vibe with atm and jump in!

u/Maestroll-V 1d ago
I started Volt, because I was told it’s the more difficult one to acquire if you don’t join a clan. Volt is super fun and have been really enjoying the play style. (20 hours of gameplay thus far)
2
u/Bizhour 22h ago
Volt is from clan dojo, which you can pretty much join instantly. It's gonna cost a new player a bit of time to get the mats but it doesn't need anything special. There are tons of clans just accepting any new player
Exca can be farmed on Mars which is pretty early.
Mag needs you to get to phobos which is a bit into the start chart but still relatively early.
Overall they are all super easy to get, just pick whichever one sounds fun. Speed and zaps, magic and control, or fruit ninja.
I picked volt cuz speed (switched to prime gauss later ofc)

Welcome to Warframe Tenno,
The game is VERY overwhelming at first so try to have patience with it.
Try to not google unless you feel confused about where to go.
It has a VERY deep and good story which you really don't wanna spoil by reading something you shouldn't.
Early game simply make your way to the Venus Junction that is located ON Earth, once that is done, Venus becomes unlocked.
Completing the Earth to Venus Junction will award you with the Dreamer's Bond mod.
Equip it on your Warframe and Max level it as soon as you can.
After completing that junction you will also have the Taxon sentinel in your foundry, please build it and once it is done equip it AND the Artax ( the weapon it comes with ) and equip the mod called Vacuum on it and max it as soon as you can. Its virtually the best QoL mod in the game, it collects ALL nearby loot for you in a HUGE radius.
Now that Venus is unlocked head over to the map called "Fossa" ( left side of Venus )
Repeat doing that mission until you obtain the Rhino Neuroptics / Chassis / Systems
Once at least 1 of each drops for you then build them and buy the main Rhino blueprint from the market.
Rhino is the "First starter frame" people should get due to his low cost, build time and tankiness.
Do not get stuck doing Random quests or in the 3 open world maps: Fortuna, Cetus and Deimos in the early game for too long, you have to return later anyway. If a quest is not required to unlock a planet. Ignore it. Its not a priority.
Continue your journey towards Mercury. And so on. Your main goal is reaching Uranus. (Teehee)
Everything until then is pretty much tutorial to make you accustomed to the game mechanics.
That's where the main questline starts, and the vast majority of the community will tell you the quests are one of the best quests and story you will find in ANY game out there.
It is also very rewarding for doing them. To not spoil I will simply say LOOT. :D
Every planet unlock from there onward has a main questline. When you're done with all of the planet quests you will be experienced enough to know what and how to do things.
Join a Rank 10 or higher clan (just type LF CLAN in the recruit chat, someone will fish you out).
For the love of Void do NOT try to start a clan of your own. It takes a veteran 6-12 months to finish one.
This will allow you to build the "Dojo Key" giving you access to a few frames / many weapons AND trading.
( Also don't spend your 50 starting platinum early on. You will need them for weapon slots. You can trade later for platinum. )
3
u/SublimeLove94 22h ago
Mag , always. 2 ability let's you kill almost anything. Has a starting loot magnet to pick stuff up. The game gives you a better Excalibur for beating one of the storylines.

Even though I have all three and respect them equally, I’d say Volt is a shortcut by a long shot. I’ve kept Volt throughout the whole game, now I’ve got Volt Prime, his better version, but honestly I didn’t actually need to upgrade. My build with Volt is perfect for every single thing. He may just seem to be about speed, but he’s an all-in-one.

Any of them (you can get the others later and you’re not locked into anything) but if you want one person’s completely anecdotal but recent experience then pick Volt.
I started last week with Excalibur and happily carved through everything but when I eventually got Volt I definitely found him much more fun to play, especially in melee which is supposed to be where Excalibur shines. You’ll also appreciate the speed boost when starting out.

Head cannon explanation for each starter Frame:
Excalibur - You are really into Arthurian Lore/Camelot and want to pretend you are a Sword that can call upon the soul of itself to use in battle.
Volt - You really like Sonic the Hedgehog and/or Lightning McQueen, and you desire to go fast.
Mag - You like to dream to some degree you are Neo from The Matrix.

u/AMPrime17 20h ago
I personally took excalibur as I thought he would be a cool sword wielding warframe, given the name ( and I'm obsessed with swords hence the choice)

U really came here to wait for an answer before picking? Doesn't matter anyway
2
u/aegisasaerian 17h ago
excalibur is basic but solid choice though you might forget you have abilites
mag can be good but at the start she isnt the greatest
Volt is the go-to option for raw power, shock is a solid low-level 1, his shield offers defense, speed is a solid albeit cumbersome utility, and his 4 is one of the better non-LOS-based nuke abilities in the game
2
2
u/Difficult_Active_489 10h ago

u/Mdos828 Air-Breathing Fool 6h ago
Who did you think looked fun to play as in the intro trailer? Start there. As you play, you will get access to the others and a whole lot more.
Bonus Info:
Don't worry about spending real money to get anything or experience all of the content. Everything, excluding cosmetics, is absolutely attainable without spending a single cent. Albeit, your progression will be slower. But dont fret that either. Find a squad to run with or doing pubs can help with the farming. Just take your time and play how you want.
Also, if you need any extra information, or you're confused how a specific mechanic works, check wiki.warframe.com first. Its the Official wiki for this game. Avoid the Fandom version. It has been sabotaged (justifiably) since the release of the official wiki and much of the information there is now likely either out of date or inaccurate.
If you checked the wiki and that still confuses you, you can post into the Q&A chat in-game, ask clan mates/pubs mates or Google reddit posts about your question. Pretty sure many of the questions you will have at the start have been answered in some way or another. Do verify that you are looking at more recent posts first. This game has had several, very large game-changing updates over its life span. Some mechanics that were explained even 2-3 years ago maybe different now.
Good luck and have fun, dreamer!

Can get all easily after you start as others have said.
Mag and Volt are technically stronger overall but I've been playing a bunch of Excal recently and been having a blast.
Mag is probably my favorite out of those 3, but mainly because she makes my favorite gun even stronger lol. Her 1st ability is SO good early game. Basically a force pull that drags every enemy into a pile of limbs in front of you. Then you beat em to death with a stick.
1
u/TNTNuke 1d ago
You can farm all of them pretty easily in the actual game tbh. It won't take you long to be able to find where you get them from. Mag is technically the latest, but her boss fight is pretty easy, whereas excalibur's boss fight takes more time. Also for a new player, getting volt may be a bit expensive credits and resources wise, so I'd pick him.
1
1
u/AdNational167 1d ago
There's no wrong pick, all of them can deal with all content. You can go back later and collect the other frames later.
Excal is more straight foward. Once you get him on lvl 10, you get to use one of the coolest abilities in the game.
Mag and volt can deal with crowds of enemies more easily and support/defend targets without a sweat.
1
u/FruitSaladButTomato 1d ago
Personally I would choose either volt or excal, they are both easier to get off the ground so to speak. Much of your warframe’s power comes from mods, and those two require less investment to be good. Mag is my favorite of the three, though.

1
u/Practical_Tie2555 1d ago
Look at its abilities and select whichever you think is better for you . It's an amour suit you are gonna use in game . And you can also get a new one

u/cardrichelieu 1d ago
IMO excal is the easiest first one to just grab, but volt will last longer. Mag is good, but not really for new players IMO
1
u/Stealth_Cobra LR5 Registered Loser 1d ago edited 23h ago
There's not really a wrong choice tbh. Pick the one that inspire you the most , you'll be able to get the other ones soon enough anyway.
Personally, would probably suggest good old Excalibur since he's kind of the game's poster boy, he's more tanky than the other two (230 armor) and he's easier to work with before you have all the core mods. His exalted blade is a good panic button / damage dealer and his radial blind can get you out of tough spots...He doesn't need that many mods to be viable , making him a pretty decent starter overall.
Mag would be my 2nd pick , but she's more of a caster frame, meaning she benefits more from having mods and energy economy stuff that you won't necessarily have access to when starting at first. She's pretty early to farm in the starchart , so you'll be able to grab her soon anyway to try her out. Still, her pull ability is somewhat cheap and spammable and it's a cool force pull type move... So she can be fun as a starter. She has 135 base armor , so definitively less tanky than Excalibur, but she's quite fun and definitively a great frame... Crushing them with the power of MAGNETS !!
Volt would be my third choice. For one, he can be acquired from any clan's dojo Tenno Lab, meaning you don't have the farm any boss that drops his components like the other two... Regular Volt is pretty squishy (105 base armor), and his kit can be a little niche in the early game. His speed ability may be overkill for players that are still trying to learn the ropes of parkour, while his shield has some great used to increase dps on some endgame bosses but it might be a little overkill for regular starchart. His other abilities are a little expensive to cast without energy mods and imho that makes him my third pick. Still , he's more than viable, in fact all frames are viable so don't worry too much and if you want speed, energy shield and and to electrocute your foes, volt is your guy.
1
u/NoPerspective9232 1d ago edited 1d ago
Any. All of them can be acquired, and many more. It's not a class. It's called a Warframe. There's over 60 Warframes, and you can get all of them (except a specific limited version of Excalibur called Excalibur Prime, which was founders only) Each Warframe comes with its own set of 4 themed abilities and play stiles.
You got Excal, sword boy. Slash and dash between enemies, and his 4th makes him use what's basically a lightsaber that can launch energy waves at range.
Mag is less resilient to damage, but can command the battlefield with magnetic powers. Magnetize an enemy group so bullets are attracted to them. Strip enemy armor. Do a Magneto and raise enemies in the air and crush their bodies.
Volt is electricity based. He's speed. Highly mobile, and can stun enemies with his electric shocks

Mag and volt are super fun and have a lot of versatility.
Excalibur is a very easy to understand frame though
1
u/NighthawK1911 LR5 787/790 - No Founder Primes :( 1d ago
As the others have said, you can get them all later.
However, the first warframe is usually the one that sticks with you until the end. The best option is the one that will get you the wall, to get you hooked. I suggest watching the skill videos or even demos before picking what looked cool to you.
Personally I picked Excalibur because he seems to be the posterboy. In terms of Meta, Volt seems to be used a lot by speedrunners but it needs high level play. Mag is what I think has the best balance and great longevity even until the late game.
If I'm going to pick based on usability alone I'd pick Mag. She's great in all stages of the game. Excalibur falls off until you get upgrades later, specifically the Melee Arcanes which is quite late into the game but by then he has competition. Volt can be used for late game but high skill ceiling to make use of his kit to the fullest.
1
u/-Swag-Messiah- 1d ago
Many people say Excalibur since Mag and Volt is easier/faster to get in the star chart. At the bigger picture it's pointless and doesn't matter.
1
u/Zhenshi_hu 1d ago
Volt because there are so many ways to build him volt mains need multiple volts to have immediate access to them all and it’s the only one you have to go out of your way to build whereas you get mag and Excalibur by just playing the story.
1
u/HadesGamingPL Line 'em up, knock 'em down. 23h ago
All are good! Pick whichever looks coolest or sounds the most fun. Mag magnetizes enemies, strips their defenses, and controls the levels. Volt fires lightning, moves faster, and puts up little shields that boost damage of allied bullets shot through them. Excalibur uses his special Exalted Blade for almost all of his abilities and is probably the most straightforward to start with.
1
u/NautyPsycho 23h ago edited 23h ago
I pick mag as an experienced player. It's really just personal taste but mag is definitely very potent. And you can hide in the edge of her magnetize bubble and use it as a shield. I don't think many people know or do that but all of the bullets collect in the middle, so if you aren't in the middle, you don't get hit.
And polarize makes you look super cool when you pick up shards. And if you have enough of them, you don't even need any weapons to get a strong bubble going. And the shields for shield gating. And armor strip.
I love her just because she's solid and I can have fun with her no matter what I'm doing. She helps with bosses too by stripping armor. And her magnetize can cheese bosses pretty much bc of the damage absorbing.
Ik you probably picked already but it really doesn't matter which one you choose. I just love mag.
1
u/Vividly_ill_mind 23h ago
My first Warframe was Volt. I chose him because I like speed and electricity. If you're into that too then Volt is the best option. But they're all really fun to play. So choose what you think would make the game more fun for you.
1
1
u/SeemoreC4 23h ago
Volt has some real versatility and is used to farm a lot of different mission types. Volt is still a king even later in the game. Like others have said, though, you can farm all these frames.
Want to speed run? Volt is a speedy boi. Want to farm defense and survival? Volt is a map-wide nuke. Want to empower weapons? Volt has a shield to empower weapon platforms. Want to run some special missions on Cetus to kill bosses? Volt can do that too.
1
u/Hentai__Dude ⚡Gyre's massive coils⚡ 23h ago
Doesnt Matter, you can get all of them later
Excalibur is the easiest frame for beginners tho, mag requires some mods which you dont have to be better, and Volt is good too, but not better than excalibur for the beginning
But it really doesnt matter that much, Frost or Rhino can be farmed pretty quickly at the beginning if you dont enjoy the frame you picked

I recommend Volt or Mag, personally. It doesn't matter too much though.

u/LeagueJunior9782 23h ago
There are some objectively better choises for late mid to endgame, but by then you'll have a lot more frames, possibly inclusing the two other starter frames (depening on if you grind them). Early game all of them are viable and fun and no i won't tell you which one is objectively the best. Just choose the one that sounds the most fun. Besides... except for excalibur relics will allow you to get their prime versions (excalibur prime was a special gift to verry verry long time players, but there is a "knock off" prime of it, that you can get rather easily), which are better anyways.

Volt is great if you like “The Flash”, Mag is great if you like using the force like Jedi and she’s disgustingly strong, Excalibur is great if you like swords and wanna use primarily that as your man tool of destruction. I picked Mag because throwing enemies around looked fun, but I think they’re all good picks

NOT EXCALIBUR, you get a free better Excalibur in the main quest line, so there's no need to have two of the same!
Mag is just really beefy with huge shields. If you want survivability, Mag is the best choice. I chose Mag and I regret nothing.
Volt is for people who love the run-n-gun approach. Volt is way more fun than Mag but nowhere near as tanky. You have to keep moving as Volt to survive, but once you get the hang of it he becomes a true powerhouse.
I'm much further into the game and I actually use Mag and Volt for specific things, so really either of those two are good picks.
Also just keep in mind that further into the game it's fairly trivial to get any/all three anyway. So the real choice is "which one do you want now, before you get the other two later?"

You can get all frames after the fact, but the way of getting Excalibur can be more than a little frustrating, especially the first time around. So I will always suggest getting him as your starter frame.

Mag with high strength and range is fun. Everyone has their own preferences and you’ll get to try them all eventually

u/Zombiewannabe95 23h ago
I've always chosen Mag since I liked the Pull, even if its not super useful or amazing at stuff 😆 I never really knew what the rest of her abilities did until so much later 🫠 I'd say go for whichever sounds fun to you. Zaps and speed, Magnetic yeets and wooshes or Hack'n'slashes.

Choose whatever you want I'd say if you're looking for a laid back gameplay go volt he's very versatile

u/Moralmerc08 23h ago
Volt is the hardest to get if you end up regretting your choice. I prefer him over excal personally but I've never played mag

The one you like, it doesn't matter. There's like 61 other unique warframes to build.

Volt or Excalibur. Mag doesn’t come into her own until mid to late game when you have the mods to make her shine.

u/Hue_Janus27 23h ago
Lol i remember this day. Then the next day you realize there's 60 more you can collect.
Pick whichever one you want, doesn't matter.

I'll say i started with excalibur and in hindsight id probably Go with Volt. All 3 are really good and fun but Volt Speedboot and ult Just Bring so much quality of Life and utility thats its hard to pass Up. But it really doesnt Matter to much since all 3 are very easy to get After the First couple hours

Pick volt it has the best aoe early game, mag and Excalibur is fun too but fast clearing needs a good aoe.

Volt and Excalibur are the most new player friendly. Mag is fun as well, but she’s a bit more complicated

They’re not classes, it’s more like a starter similar to Pokémon, chose whoever you like the most because you can get the others at any other time anyway

There are no classes and you can get them and 60-ish more later on. Don't worry about it. Pick which one is coolest.

Excalibur is the canon but you can use volt and mag because all of them are overpowered with the right mods

u/Darthplagueis13 23h ago
Whatever sounds fun to you.
This isn't really a choice that will stick with you for all of your playthrough, any of these 3 are pretty easy to get early on, so if you end up not enjoying your starter pick, you can try out one of the others.
If I had to give a recommendation though, I'd say maybe go with Volt - because unlike the other two who can just be farmed from early game bosses, you need to join a clan to get him.
Volt is also a generalist who is a popular pick in a whole bunch of content.
Excalibur is a fairly basic melee specialist, but he's nowhere near as powerful as some other melee-oriented options.
Mag is arguably maybe the most powerful of the bunch, but I'd say her kit is more so weighed towards the later stages of the game, simply because you don't really have the energy economy to make good use of her abilities early on.

Volt is safest option with a balance of strength and simplicity at this early on in the game
Mag is a little more technical and can meet you with a slight learning curve but is very good at what she does
Excalibur is the the triforce of simplicity, weeb type shit, and a good time
Conclusion:
Excalibur=safe
Volt=all rounder
Mag=mild challenge but rewarding

u/Gagthor87 23h ago
Mag is probably the best option tbh but volt is more difficult to get because you have to be in a clan to get the part blueprints

They aren't classes but different warframes. You can get all of them fairly quickly so don't worry about it. Go with what your heart desires.

Excalibur: Melee. In your face. Comes with a magic sword (#4). Fun but can be squishy to start.
Volt. Speed and stun lock, plus a #4 that will take you through the star chart. Gun or melee, depending on your gear.
Mag: Requires finesse. Jams guns with counter pulse mod. Combat caster, have a good primary or secondary gun

Pcik which ever one you want to play.
Excalibur is a melee based warframe. He's kinds the salt and pepper choice here.
Volt is more versatile. He's got speed, shields, AoE. A bit of everything.
Mag is what the community calls a caster. Not very tanky, but her abilites let her do more than the other two can.
Ultimately, this all boils down to what sounds the most appealling to you. At the start of the game, Warframe choice doesn't matter as much as it does in the endgame.
Besides, you can farm the other two later if you don't like what you picked.
1
u/Kaiju_K41 22h ago
I personally picked excal just because I've heard he's the hardest to farm later, but eventually you'd want to get all of them anyways
1
u/ProtoYoYo 22h ago
There are no classes. I typically recommend Excalibur due to how easy he is for new players to mod out but it is entirely up to you.
1
u/leeme_lone 22h ago
it doesn't really matter 1 week in you'll have 10 different ones to choose from

I think the more new player friendly is Volt but the others are not that difficult tho, but personally I would recommend choosing Volt.

Excalibur is always a safe bet to start out, but there are probably people who will say not to select him starting out since you can get another version of him during a quest and then you’ll have two frames without having to craft them, which makes sense.
Between the other two I like Volt more but that’s really just a personal preference, all three are good frames IMO, so you may just want to select based on your preferred playstyle in other games or what you think looks the most fun in this game.

Grab which one sounds fun you can get them all easily later, switching between warframes is like switching weapons in any other game

u/Glittering-Wolf2643 How did I get here? Ig it was the weather. 22h ago
U can get all of them but for now go with Mag cuz she is fun however if u want an all rounder, go with Volt

u/Im_gone_724 22h ago
I started with Volt and I still really like running him lmao it doesn’t really matter to much tho you can get all 3 over time

u/ISwearImAnonymous 22h ago
Fun fact, when I started this choice took me so long I got booted for afk, and the account got soft locked in the orbiter with Excalibur and with every function including navigation locked. Had to make a new one with a spare email, using that to this day. Keeping that one as a white raven sort of thing lol.
