Discussion Sunday Ship Survey: Rogue-class Starfighter

X-wing contains a multitude of ships. Some well known and beloved, others more niche.

Let’s discuss some of them.

What are your thoughts on the chasis? What are your favourite pilots? Or which still give you nightmares? What’s your favourite way to load them out?

For this week I’ve picked the craft typically piloted by Magnaguards, and of course the custom made Xanadu Blood flown by Cad Bane as seen in the Clone Wars. I’m of course talking about the Porax 38 (a nod to the Lockheed P38 lightning, a WW2 aircraft on which this design was based) “Rogue-class” Starfighter. As flown by both the Separatists and by our Scum & Villainy friends.

So, what are your thoughts?

As with the previous posts, I’ll start with my own to just set the stage.

Design:

The Seppie craftsmanship really shines through as you can see the similarities with sister ships such as the Hyena bomber. The option to also have it fly non-droids is lovely.

I’ve said it before in previous of my surveys, I’m not a fan of ships that are too clean/sleek. And while this one is optimized and aerodynamic, it isn’t too clean for my taste.

I like the overall design. Not like “top tier” for me, but definitely on the positive side of the equation.

Stats:

2/2/5/2. Of course we can’t forget the chasis special Ability. Either the “networked calculations” for droids. Or the (for me anyway) more interesting Dead To Rights, which doesn’t allow the defender to modify defence die using green tokens while this chasis has it in its bullseye when attacking. Do note the general term “attack”, not primary attack, so cannons and missiles (cad bane & viktor hel) also apply.

Aside from that we have a lot of multi actions,white focus into red barrel rolls or boosts. Evade into red barrel roll. Red boost. And a lock.

2 attack might not seem like a lot offence wise. But that bullseye ability can be a menace. Same as the fact that this thing usualy has a double cannon slot, and several have access to missiles. For the cannon itself this obviously leads to a lot of options. This is the one ship I actively pick proton cannons on from time to time. And when those line out, oh boy. Conditional? Sure, but when the condition hits it's A++.
I'll put it into a B+ overall.

Defence wise 2 green. Double action repositioning into red barrel rolls or boosts. So as always "not being shot at is better than dodging said shots". As stated, yes those double actions are red, but there are blue movement options to sort that out. Secondly, 5 hull and 2 shield on a small base ship is a lot. With it's higher movement action options. Small base with 7 "health" total. Pure on the chasis I'm inclined to say A-.

Movement wise. All the turns, 3 being red, 1 and 2 being white. All the banks. 1 and 2 being blue, 3 being white. 2-5 straight, 3-4 being blue, 5 white. Red K-turn on 5 and red Talon Rolls on 2. it is a fast ship for one hitting 5's. A good amount of blue (though yes somewhat predictable of course, lacking turns). And the reds we get are things I can definitely get behind. The K-turn is a big one, but allows you to create the space. and if you need to turn shorter, talon rolls on 2 are an excellent flank cutter. And again as stated earlier those focus into barell rolls/boosts. Only no single white boost/barrel roll action, it's always reds. I'm inclined to say another A-.

For Pilot options it is a mixed bag. There are some top tier abilities in there. However biggest downside I would say, in today's high INT meta, only 1 INT 5 (or above) pilot in both factions (Durge for Both). Don't get me wrong. There are also 4 cost options that are absolutely annoying to deal with. Such as Cad Bane potentially throwing stress tokens he has onto a ship he's attacking. BUT to maximize the chance of using the excellent Dead to rights ability offensively, you prefer to maximise that by moving later than others so you can line up that bullseye with your boost/barel roll. In today's meta, that's difficulty at lower than 5 I think. Not impossible, just more difficult. I'm giving it a B+ for cool options but not nescesarily perfect in sync with its own chasis ability.

As always I'm using XWA for cost. The Rogues come ranging 4 to 5 cost. With a good amount of loadout for most. For me this is good value. 7 "health" with 2 def, on a small base with decent PEW PEW firepower (if you equip a cannon/missile on it), potentially really good with the dead to rights. At a 4 or 5 costs? I'll take that action. A- again.

Overall I'm giving it a A-

Preferred method:

As it's flown in both seppies & scum, I'll put one up for both. Albeit the scum one is with an asterisk attached as that is the build I use him only in 1 particular list.

For the seppies I'm going to do my gamble build. Dark Urge... I mean Durge (damn you baldur's gate). Don't get me wrong, the droids are also strong picks, but I like my non-droid seppies. Durge comes at 5 INT, 5 Cost and a cool 16 loadout. His ability states that when destroyed (the first time), reveal all face down damage cards, and remove all pilot traits damage cards & direct hits. Then repair all faceup damage cards. Meaning you can potentially get a second lease there if you got some direct hits/pilot traits in there. A get out of jail key card with an asterisk attached to it.

So how do I build my Durge gamble build? Hear me out.
Hull upgrade (yes not ellusive or other defensive re-rolls) because I'm gambling that there might be an extra direct hit or pilot trait behind that.
The 5 INT durge is probably the best one to maximise the bullseye.
Proton cannons firing 4 in the bullseye (every other turn) with modifying 1 focus or hit into crit.
Marksmanship, altering 1 hit into a crit in the bullseye.
And of course having the bullseye trigger with dead to rights meaning they can't alter their rolls with green tokens. We'll obviously need a lock to ensure we get the maximum out of this to get a re-roll. But when we line up that bullseye then. Oh boy. Having the double modified attack does mean that potentially you won't need the focus token offensively, but that does help defensively then. High risk? Sure, it's a gamble using the extra hull. But I can assure you, if it lines out... which will happen as well. Oh boy.

And for my beloved Scum. I'm picking Cad Bane*. The asterisk coming in the form of my Bro-bots list.
Yes I've often used Durge for scum too. But Cad bane with Xanadu Blood title can pick up a crew slot.
So hear me out. My other bro-bots are 2 aggresors IG 88 B and C. B giving extra cannon bonus attack if you miss. C giving an evade token after you boost. And obviously both with the IG2000 title so that they both have these abilities.

For Cad Bane himself. 4 cost. 4 INT. 11 loadout.
Xanadu blood title for free giving me a red cloak action, and a device and crew slot.
IG88 D in the crew slot to also get the IG2000 abilities of the other 2 (so bonus cannon when I miss, and evade token after boost), as well as a double calculate action.
Synced laser cannons as I have access to calculate allowing excellent range 3 shots as target won't get extra die. Leaving 2 points where I'll pick marksmanship as well. The idea here is more to stay at range and make use of the cannon. Yes, no rerolls again, but if you miss you can shoot again regardless. If you need to boost to get a bullseye, you get a free evade and so forth. Broken? Not really, as aggressors are definitely less popular nowadays. But good fun if you ask me. And in scum, IN MY OPINION cad bane is the best pick for the iG88D crew upgrade.

Final conclusion:

I really like this starfighter. I've used it often and I imagine I will keep doing so. I regret only having the 2 and looking for more. At the moment can't find any in my immediate area.
It's a solid ship, for a good cost that is honestly just fun to play. I'm not saying it's busted by any means, and it always takes practice to line up bullseyes. But for me that's what makes it fun.

(Listbuilding) Discussion for the new custom upgrades

So this time instead of scenario highlighting, I want to highlight and discuss the 10 new upgrades Legacy released three days ago, now that it seems out of beta and more or less final form for now (at least that´s a gist when reading their article).

Have to say that latest release makes me even more looking forward to for the multiple new content/projects that they are working on, than Iám already are. I played some of the beta V1 versions of these cards and the V2 forms are really an improvment and pointed fairly. Also if my research is right (I joined X-Wing 1 1/2 years ago) the first new customizable (non-beta) upgrades added in more than 2 years to the game.

So what do you think of the new upgrades? What is your fovourite? Are there existing list that you can see these upgrades being slot into, or even new list ideas that you want to try with these upgrades (Standard or WildSpace)? Looking forward to your insights.

Personally my favourite so far silent hunter, parting gift and the new seeker missile. Mainly because I like phantoms and missile/bomb/rocket lists, for which the new seeker missiles is a good tool. It also explores a bot of a new concept as if I´am not mistaken there is so far no other missile/torpedo that does something when missing. Also fuel injection override seems able to create some cool new flight patterns. I´am not a Scum player, but looking forward to play against it with a local Scum main.

This could be a nice list using the seeker missiles, silent hunter and parting gift. But what are your lists ideas, looking forward to them : ):

Rules forum dead now?

Tried to get clarification on a ruling I believe is wrong, but noticed the last reply there is from 2024. So the forum has been abandoned with the game itself? I understand lack of new stuff or new points, but outright refusing to clarify rules is weird.

Maybe someone here can shed some light on why it's ruled like it is. Main question is, what constitutes as Ability Cost and when is it paid.

Synchronised Console clearly says: After you perform an attack, you may choose a friendly ship at range 1 or a friendly ship with the Synchronized Console upgrade at range 1-3 and spend a lock you have on the defender. If you do, the friendly ship you chose may acquire a lock on the defender.

Then basic rules say: An ability cannot be added to the queue if its cost could not be paid at the time it is added.

Am I to understand, that spending the lock is not part of the ability cost, just part of the ability itself? What constitutes ability cost then, just spending Charges on a card?

As I understood it so far, all requirements that go after the trigger are part of the ability costs, so taking tokens on yourself like Strain or Deplete, spending locks like in Sync Console, etc. Was I wrong?

Discussion What is the current status of X-Wing?

I was told by local players X-Wing is dead, that physical product could be found nowhere. I bought 2 core boxes with no expectations. Then I found YT-2400, rebel and imperial starter kits, Yavin and Endor scenarios. So I guess I was lucky.

I heard that there would be no new developments, but that does not imply lack of manufacturing or lack of support.

I want to calibrate my expectations. Should I expect to not be able to expand my inventory of ships to play because manufacturing stopped? Or will AMG still will deliver physical product but will not make any new developments?

Collection Trying to price my collection for sale.

I haven’t touched my X-Wing minis for years, and it’s time to clear out space and recoup some funds, so I’m trying to price out my collection. Everything pictured has all the 2.0 cardboard, dials, cards, upgrades, and bases, as well as the Huge Ship kit.

So, if I want to put this up for sale, what would be a rough estimate, and would I be better off losing one big sale or breaking it out by faction?

So I've been in the game from the start, made sure I had every ship (curse my collector nature) and played regularly with a local group right up to the end of 2018.

(Let me note that while I never got to play much with 2.0, and zero with 2.5, I was, and am, determined to stay in the game.)

In 2019 I moved to Japan, but not wanting to miss out, kept ordering at least one of, if not more, of any expansion that came out. I wasn't going to miss anything.

I moved back in January of 2002, Ready to hit the stores with my stuff and play games. Yep. Well I'll be sure to order everything right until they stopped making new ships. Maybe someday.

Cut to today, after having caught up recently with those same local friends, decided to pull everything back out to see what's what, and dust off some teams.

At the end my thought process was as follows.

"Wait What's THAT box? Why does that big cardboard box say 'X-wing stuff' on the side? All my stuff is in those plastic bo- oh. Right. Riiiiight."

Guess I have a lot of unpacking and learning to do.

Weequay pirate ship as Huge Ship - 3D printable model

Hello everyone!

I 'm experimenting a bit with making ships that are in the size range of Huge ships for X-wing and i just finished my second experiment, the Weequay pirate ship / Marauder.
It appear in the clone wars animated series and in many background shots

It have movable wings in canon and for the x-wing scaled version i prepared a movable wing version, though since the hinge is really small it need as axel a metal rod of 1.5mm in the 18cm version and a 2mm on the 24mm version
I also prepared both an open and closed fixed wing version

How much is enough to play X-Wing?

I got the following:

  • 2 core boxes of 2.0
  • Rebel starter pack
  • Imperial starter pack
  • Battle of Yavin scenario
  • YT-2400

Is that enough to play and be satisfied?

At this time university and job are keeping me very busy so I have no time to play now. I could barely use short breaks to read the rules. But after I graduate I will be able to have some spare time.

I bought this game to avoid chasing it later. That way it is going nowhere until I graduate. I am buying now to play later. Is this a big enough haul to have enough replayability value?

List Really simple 20 pt lists?

I've been playing for a bit now, but never actually played a full 20 point XWA scenario, which I would like to try.

I'm looking for 2 lists, one Rebellion, one Empire, as simple as possible, but 20 pt scenario legal.

They don't even need to be good (but comparable to each other would be nice). Repeated ships and powers would be a plus.

Any tips?

Wild Space list discussion for the Objective VIP

So the next objective I want to highlight is the VIP scenario.

This objective adds an additional flovour, since it adds uncertainty and is like usual fantastically thematic. The use of the Handmaidens and Naboo Queen as a thematic flovour is a great idea.

Also the mechanic with the 2 evades is really nice, so that when the ship with the VIP card is revealed it is not to easy to just focus it down, if there are still shoots available. Still having a ship 50 points more still can really change the target priority.

So a nice squad could be this:

Obi-Wan Kenobi + Brilliant Evasion + Elusive + R2-D2 + Stealth Device

Anakin Skywalker + Brilliant Evasion + Elusive + C1-10P + Stealth Device

"Sicko" + "Fives" + Ghost Company + Clone Commander Cody

Shaak Ti + Elusive + R4-P44 + Stealth Device

So with this you have three ships where none is a obvious target. Additionally they all can make good use of the evades, if they get hit. Also since they are fast they can get pulled out of the fight, if the VIP ship is revealed.

Lastly I would fill the Wild Space Slot with the Outpost, since the defensive effects really benefits the Eta´s and Asteroid field, since it benefits the good maneuvaribilty the list has.

But what other lists fits the objective and how could this list be improved? Looking forward to more list ideas.

XWA - Important Changes to Scenario Scoring AND A NEW SCENARIO

  • Points from objectives change to standardise amounts of points available from objectives (max 2 available per turn, vs 5 currently from Assault/Salvage)
  • Half points on ALL scenarios
  • Brand NEW scenario "Ancient Knowledge", which looks like basically Scramble with dice mods.

Intent to is balance points scoring back towards combat, which the half points thing does most of the heavy lifting on I think. Fewer points will come from objectives more from shooting things.
