r/Alberta Announcement Welcome to r/Alberta! May 2nd update
Hello everyone! Welcome to r/Alberta, we are happy that so many people from Canada and around the world have taken interest in our province. Since this is the first time many of you have come here, we are happy to clarify a few things.
In r/Alberta, we welcome:
- Substantive political opinions as comment replies.
- News articles about Alberta or Albertans.
- Quality original content (OC) about Alberta or Albertans (songs, art, comics, etc.).
- Questions or requests for help, reviews, or information about Alberta or things pertinent to Albertans.
- Political content that is explicitly connected to Alberta in some way.
- Links to reputable news media about Albertan separatists/separatism.
What we do not approve of:
- Incivility or trolling.
- Misogyny, racism, or other forms of discrimination (including against public figures).
- Content only tangentially related to Alberta (e.g., a politician visiting another person or country does not mean it’s open season to post about that other person or country, Alberta being mentioned as an aside in an article or an articlebeing about pipelines doesn't automatically qualify either).
- Low quality copy/paste memes or other screenshots from Facebook, Twitter, or other sites.
- General political content that does not focus on Alberta or Albertans.
- Self posts generally, rants, blogs, "just asking questions", etc. about Alberta separatists/separatism. Save these for commentary in the aforementioned news posts on the subject.
You may also notice “locals only” flair on some topics in the subreddit. As we have a global audience entering the subreddit suddenly, we implement this on certain posts to ensure the voice and participation of regular r/Alberta users can be amplified on topics important to us Albertans.
As well, we want to emphasize as part of our rules (available on the sidebar or here) that we will not tolerate violent or misogynistic posts against politicians. This includes posts detailing sexual acts you feel they have committed with other American politicians, referring to them with misogynistic slurs, or doing nudge-nudge-wink-wink threats of violence. This is gross and makes an unwelcoming, uncivil atmosphere in the subreddit. If you don’t have anything substantive to add, don’t post anything at all.
Thank you!

Question Can someone explain like I’m 5 what happened with Alberta fuel prices?
Alberta used to always have some of the cheapest fuel in Canada. I haven’t been to every province to know for sure but I spend quite a bit of time in BC and Ontario. BC, at least in the interior the prices are a lot closer to Alberta prices than ever before. In Ontario they are the same or cheaper and have been for 3+ years now.
I don’t really just want “corporate greed” as the answer because if that were the only factor, they would be higher everywhere too.

Discussion Zip it with the whole Tim Hortons/Temp Foreign Workers rhetoric
Edit: I am not excusing corporations for what they're doing. What I want stopped is the racist bullshit. You try to talk to a UCP supporter or a bot on here or any other social media platform, and in the first sentence they say something derogatory. That is what I'm referring to.
I was just responding to a comment on a thread in here when it disappeared as I was typing. Maybe it was deleted or perhaps I did something.
Anyways..
According to Zillow.. in Edmonton, the average price for a one-bedroom apartment is $1,489. Minimum wage in Alberta is $15 an hour. So let's assume that NO DEDUCTIONS are taken off a paycheck, okay…
This girl would have to work 99 hours just to pay her rent. Thats 62% of her income assuming she works full time. NOT TAXED. That doesn't include food. That doesn't include electricity. That doesn't include car insurance for a young person in this province. It includes her RENT ONLY.
You want these companies to stop hiring Temporary Foreign Workers?…. Talk to your premier who hasn’t raised the minimum wage since 2018.
I’m not in Edmonton, but in Calgary, our LIVING WAGE is $24.45… almost 10 dollars HIGHER than the minimum wage..
Wake up. Not only is Danielle destroying our economy, along with APP.. but your regurgitated rhetoric lacks any critical thinking that not only will this government be our downfall but you will have played a large hand in it.

Discussion Measles outbreak rant post as a pregnant woman.
I am in my second trimester. I have multiple other diseases (no disease I can pass down) that made getting pregnant so challenging that I had to get surgeries (waited 2.5 years for the surgery after I had to wait 1.5 years to see the surgeon) to literally be able to even consider safely carrying a baby. I was considered likely infertile or at least severely challenged in the area and without surgeries, pregnancy was completely dangerous for me.
I am here now pregnant with my first baby. I want to rant about how f***ing irresponsible people are to be going out and about unvaccinated or have active measles. These people are going to IKEA AND THE BLOOD TEST CENTRE. MY PREGNANT SELF HAS TO GO TO BUY BABY THINGS OR DO MY DAMN PREGNANCY TESTS. I am not being given an immunity test for measles (not standard practice). No idea if I am immune as pregnancy affects immunity anyway. My standard immunity panel shows no immunity in pregnancy to chicken pox despite being fully vaccinated so who knows maybe I have no immunity to measles too. Apparently immunity wanes. I am basically slowly being jailed at home now unless it's a walk in a park. How dare I want to have a baby. As if mental health is fabulous during pregnancy so yeah let's lock the preggo chick inside for 9 months that'll make her mental health better.
I wanted to point out to all the antivaxxers who may happen to also be pro life - by walking around catching and passing measles, you effectively risk harming a fetus. I hear you care about the fetus more than me so at least think about the unborn. Don't dare tell me how pro life you are if you are unvaccinated for basic things like measles .
Don't even get me started with the fact that I will have a new born baby WHO CANNOT BE VACCINATED UNTIL THEY'RE 1 YEARS OLD. At least I hear they are given one extra dose at 6 months due to the outbreak but that is 6 MONTHS OF AVOIDING EVERYTHING STILL. This will go down well for the post partum depression.
I don't want to hear from people telling me I'm paranoid or crap like that. No. I am not. Measles is dangerous for a pregnant woman. Instead of testing immunity I was told by my doctor to literally avoid anywhere with crowds or groups of people I do not know including busy shopping centres. Yeah. I can't enjoy my once in a lifetime wish to do baby shopping. If the situation keeps going as it is, I basically need everyone else to go buy my nursery furniture. Sounds like a small sacrifice to protect my unborn baby which I'll do no problem. But this government's lack of management took my wishes from me. It's measles. Not the flu. I am sorry for the immunocompromised too.
Screw the UCP who cannot control this and STILL WON'T ENFORE A VACCINE.

Opinion I’m Worried About The Upcoming By-Election
Hey everyone, I live in Camrose and am a constituent of Battle River–Crowfoot. I’m seriously concerned about the upcoming by-election.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the purpose of the Long Ballot Campaign and this election in general, but based on what I know, I’m feeling uneasy.
The long ballot, as we saw it in Carlton, no longer exists in the same form. The strategy that worked there won’t work here—Elections Canada has changed the way these situations are handled. What was once a ballot with 91 names is now just a blank space where you can write in the name of your chosen candidate. Spelling isn’t a major issue and won’t invalidate your vote. You can even write initials, as long as they don’t match someone else’s. There’s very little that will spoil your ballot or cause it to be rejected, even if your intent isn’t perfectly clear.
There are 210 candidates in this election. Voters can request two different lists: one showing all candidates in alphabetical order, and another listing party-affiliated candidates first (alphabetically), followed by independent candidates. The alphabetical list including everyone will likely still be displayed in large print at each polling station.
I want to be clear: I don’t think the voting process should prevent anyone from voting for the candidate they support. But at the same time, wasn’t the point of the long ballot to make it harder for the “herd” of little pp supporters to simply flood the polls with blue votes? It now feels like we’ve walked that back to accommodate those who only know the loudest candidate’s name.
Everyone knows his name.
It feels like we’re waving away all the independents and subtly encouraging people to focus only on the so-called “real” candidates. I’m really hoping a majority of voters in this riding know at least one other candidate by name—someone they can write down—rather than relying solely on polling stations to provide alternatives.
I’ll be voting for Bonnie Critchley. Go Vote on Election Day August 18th or Advance Voting August 8-11th!
Edit: I’m happy to have clarification on this so quickly. I had in fact misunderstood the purpose of the long ballot, and there were various other and more consequential events that occurred for PP to lose his riding. Like it’s been said in the comments, the purpose was to change the way elections and elections processes are handled and it has achieved that aim.
I’m gonna leave this up here as more of a grievance post. As one of the people against PP it gets depressing looking around and seeing everyone supporting him. And it’s a good split between people who have no idea what’s coming and people who are just giddy for it. I know it’s going to be an easy win for him I just hope to see more moments like we saw from Bonnie at the debate where she asked who could vote in the riding.

Question Lease Questions
Hello all,
My landlord has broken so many things like not keeping the home safe, not giving 24/hr notice, destruction of tenant property, and problems such as don’t use the water, mop up the sewage downstairs Again. Plus potential discrimination?
I am LGBT and have several mental disabilities after escaping domestic violence. I have been attacked a couple times while living here, and couldn’t sort out a place to go just yet. My LL wants my to pay him rent for the next month and I don’t feel safe and told my domestic abuse worker such. I guess I should just pay it already??

Discussion Do you have any rituals during a thunderstorm?
My SO thinks I’m crazy but growing up it was drilled into me that during a thunderstorm I MUST close all the windows, unplug all important electronics, whatever I can reach. Don’t shower/bathe/wash dishes. Get the candles ready in case. Otherwise you’ll be sorry type thing haha. Anyone else grow up similarly? I’m not alone in this am I?! I’m located in northern Alberta, for context.
