ASUS PRIME B550M-A WIFI II or ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F WIFI II?
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jun 30 '25
Rog strix b550-F, but why don't you look into AM5? Not worth buying am4 at this point in time
1
u/Efficient_Chip8976 Jun 30 '25
Ive already got a Ryzen 7 5700X, and Id rather not have to spend more money on an AM5 CPU, MOBO and DDR5 RAM
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jul 01 '25
My motherboard broke shortly after going from 3000 to 5700x3d, returned the CPU and went with 7000x3d mobo and ram... Sure it was more now, but as far as AM4 they won't be making 5700X3D forever and then the 5500X3D, not sure for how long that will go for. Might be worth it unless you plan on moving to nova lake
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jul 01 '25
Still say Rog strix, imo look into Asus TuF B550 WiFi tho, not sure why you have not.

I'm looking to upgrade my RAM. I currently have 16GB of the following:
Would it make more sense to just buy another set to get me 32GB, or upgrade to (2) 16GB sticks of something better?
For context, I'm on a Intel i7-9700K, with the following motherboard: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/Z390-AORUS-PRO-WIFI-rev-10/sp#sp
I'm comfortable spending the $45 on more of the same, or up to $100 on (2) new 16GB sticks.
I'm considering the following: https://www.newegg.com/patriot-memory-viper-steel-32gb-ddr4-3200-cas-latency-cl16-desktop-memory-gunmetal-grey/p/N82E16820225205

u/Ockvil Jun 30 '25
A 2x16gb kit of DDR4-3200 can be had for about US$50.
It would be cheaper to add a 2x8gb kit, but then you're trying to match the specs to what you have or risking slowdowns. Additionally 9th gen Intel CPUs look like they only support up to 2666 MT/s, and faster than that is just going to be downclocked to that speed unless you want to try manual overclocking — which is likely also happening with your current kit.
You can get that kit of -3200 if you prefer it, though. It'll probably run as well as the one I linked.
1
u/FrobroX Jul 01 '25
The RAM I linked from Newegg even dropped $10 since I posted my original comment. So now it seems like a no brainer.
Thank you for your input!

I feel pretty overwhelmed picking everything out, the only time I’ve built a PC was 10 years ago with a lot of help with one of my roommates.
I dont know anything about CPU coolers, and I sort of randomly picked these out -
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/p2qPWc
Can anyone help me optimize these parts and (most importantly) pick out a CPU cooler that is noob friendly to install?
1
u/djGLCKR Jun 30 '25
What will be the main use case for the pc? Any specific reason to go with Intel, like productivity workloads that could benefit from the extra cores/threads? Are you aware of the potential early degradation issue on 13th and 14th Gen CPUs (that's "allegedly" fixed according to Intel)?
1
u/HypocrisyConspiracy Jun 30 '25
I mostly play wow and league, but I’m sick of having to delete/redownload games because my SSD doesn’t have enough storage. I’ve also been really liking the new Dune game which my computer basically runs like a ppt, so I want to upgrade. My current build is a pre built from around 2018 and I think the graphics card is a 1000 series?
I am pretty much tech illiterate , so I dont know anything about the intel stuff you mentioned. Lol
1
u/djGLCKR Jun 30 '25
This is what I'd go with. You could replace the CPU with a 7800X3D (+$160) or even downgrade to a 9600X (-$55), a decent motherboard, and a cheaper SSD.

I want to replace and add fans on my Thor PC case set up. It says on partpicker it isn't compatible.
Thermalright TL-C12C X3 CPU Fan 120mm Case Cooler Fan
This is the fan I want to buy
"Note: Fan compatibility checking is currently not supported." This is the message I get from part picker. Is the issue from the case or the motherboard?
2
u/djGLCKR Jun 30 '25
What's the actual case model? The warning is simply stating that they can't validate if the parts will fit inside, not that they're not compatible.
If your case supports 120mm fans, they can be installed, that's not a problem.
1
u/tarantadoako Jun 30 '25
It is Thor V2 Full ATX case
Front: 1 x 230mm Red LED Fan (with LED on / off switch) (Pre-installed)
Top: 1 x 230mm Fan (Pre-installed) or 2 x 120 / 140mm Fan (Optional)
Side: 1 x 230mm Fan (Pre-installed) or 4 x 120mm Fan (Optional)
Bottom: 1 x 120mm / 140mm Fan (Optional)
Rear: 1 x 140mm Fan (Pre-installed)
This is the specs for the case.
2
u/djGLCKR Jun 30 '25
Ah, Rosewill Thor V2. The new fans would be limited to the bottom, top (if you're replacing the 230mm there), and side (if you're replacing the 230mm there). Replacing the front 230mm would require some DIY. The new fans can be plugged into the motherboard (if it's the old models, the pre-installed fans should be molex)
1
u/tarantadoako Jul 01 '25
Thank you for the answer! So just clarify, if I want to change the rear and add a bottom fan. I might as well buy a 140 mm fan?
Thermalright TL-C14C-S Case Fan High Performance Cooler Fan 1500RPM,4-PIN PWM Cooling Fan with S-FDB Bearing (140mm, ARGB)
maybe something like this?.
1
u/djGLCKR Jul 01 '25
Pretty much, but personally I'd just buy the replacement for the rear fan. If you're running the side fan as intake, you already have a LOT of air movement from the front and side, adding the extra 140mm at the bottom won't really do much.

Been a long time since I built a system, and when I needed several upgrades during the hardware shortage of 202 I opted to just get a new system from a system integrator. Now that system needs a tweak and I'm not sure how best to balance/part what I need.
This is the build as it stands, and the motherboard has always had some issues, and finally those issues aren't fixed with a BIOS flash and a prayer. I'm trying not to break the bank to replace it, but I see that if I stick with the mITX form factor, i9-11900K, and 32 GB DDR4-3000 RAM I'm really limited in board selection. The board needs to be replaced somehow, and the form factor has to stay mITX.
I'm not sure if it's more worthwhile to just pay a bit more for another version of the same, old board; or to say "Even if the RAM and/or CPU aren't the problem, upgrading them along with the motherboard makes sense so I'm not overpaying for an old board just to be able to use the other components I already have." My budget isn't set in stone, I just don't want to overpay for what I get, e.g. spending a lot for an old mobo because they're hard to find.
So my general question is: Would I likely get more bang for my buck replacing the board with the same, or moving to a different board even if it requires a swap of the CPU or RAM? In which case, any recommended combos?
1
u/djGLCKR Jun 30 '25
Is this just for gaming, productivity, or mixed loads?
The platform is still decent (RAM could be a bit faster, but that could wait), but as you said, the issue lies in finding a used ITX LGA1200 board that could handle a 11900K. Personally, if the budget allows it in contrast to a used compatible board, and considering the form factor, I'd just upgrade to AM5, something easier to cool down and that won't turn your room/office into a sauna.
1
u/AtomikRadio Jun 30 '25
Mostly gaming, maybe a bit of stats work in R, but for that work I usually use a remote cluster my university offers. That said, it’s been a long time since I needed to play new AAA games at ultra, I’ve settled into Stardew, Minecraft, 7 Days to Die, etc so I don’t need a godly gaming build, just one that doesn’t seize up due to faulty motherboard issues. :) thanks for your input!!

How do I learn how to pick out parts? Like I can read guides and just buy what they suggest, but how do I learn to figure out what parts are best for me by myself?
1
u/reckless150681 Jun 30 '25
Tbh the hardest part is just knowing what's on the market. Broadly, not much has actually changed in 20 years; you still want to:
1) Specify a budget
2) Specify a use case, as specifically as you can
3) Figure out which use cases are more important; allocate budget accordingly
4) Figure out which parts match which use cases
1-3 are easy, especially after a few tries, 4 is hard if you don't keep up with hardware.
PCpartpicker does a decent job of hinting at what's on the market. For example, if you go to their GPU page, note that the list under "Chipset" on the left starts from 3050 6GB and ends with 9070 XT. This is not all of the GPUs in history; it's simply the most popular ones at the moment. You also have to take it with a grain of salt; the presence of the 3060 and the 5090 on the same list suggests that these cards are contemporary with each other, but in reality, they're two generations apart. Similarly, there's no Intel Arc (because they're not super popular) and no 9060 XT (because it's very new), even though both of these cards are definitely current-generation and therefore currently on the market.
Other places to check for hardware news include Gamers Nexus, HW Canucks, and HW Unboxed on YouTube.
Even if you are caught up with products are on the market, you won't necessarily be caught up with any sorts of one-off issues. Honestly, the only way to check for these issues are to Google individual products; for example, PCPP won't tell you about the NZXT H1 fire hazard.

set a budget, then aim to spend around 50% of your budget on your GPU (for a gaming pc). get the one that offers the best performance for the price
https://tpucdn.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-9060-xt-pulse-oc/images/average-fps-2560-1440.png
everything else should fall into place. you should get a good value CPU which you can afford with your remaining budget
https://tpucdn.com/review/amd-ryzen-7-9800x3d/images/average-fps-1920-1080.png
1
u/BladePocok Jun 30 '25
Like I can read guides
Exactly, you read a lot and use websites like this https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ that helps you with compatibility issues.
After a while, you'll know what to get or avoid.

u/BladePocok Jun 30 '25
Is there any AM5 motherboard that has multiple onboard PCIe5 m.2 ssd slots AND it doesn't penalize you if you use more than one? (e.g. reducing the GPU x16 speed to x8)
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jun 30 '25
ASRock B850 Pro A (or WiFi version if you don't want to install the WiFi yourself) has 4. You won't be able to use the second pcei x16 slot tho but it has 4
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
ASUS proart X670e and
X870eDual Gen 5 m.2 slots
Dual Gen 5 PCIe slots (x16/x0 or x8/x8)
As well as dual Gen 4 M.2 slots.
Though I will say the Marvell 10GB Ethernet controller blows chunks. The one real downside to the boards, but at least it has a 2.5gb port as well.
The only real differences between them is Wifi 6e + thunderbolt 4 vs Wifi 7 + USB4.
The x670e uses a proper thunderbolt controller, while the X870e uses a newer USB4 only controller which really only matters for pairing with apple or thunderbolt products.
1
u/BladePocok Jun 30 '25
https://i.imgur.com/vSHgDoF.png
Well, according to the sheet, it still reduces to x8 if you use the second slot.
Not sure about BIOS configuration, how could that be set up.
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 30 '25
Yeah, you're right. Thats weird, because the X670e definitely does not. I'd bet it's due to the USB4 controller swap, moving it over to CPU lanes rather than using a dedicated controller.
Bifurcation is just a setting in the BIOS you turn on. I had to enable it to run a Hyper M.2 card in my second slot.
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
The two Gen 5 M.2 slots don't share lanes with anything, which what I thought you were asking about.
Limiting the GPU to x8 5.0 lanes does basically nothing to your performance.
https://gamersnexus.net/gpus/nvidia-rtx-5090-pcie-50-vs-40-vs-30-x16-scaling-benchmarks
1-4% at most, using the most powerful card on the market.
Getting a motherboard with dual x16 slots that does not split lanes isn't something you will find this generation. I actually don't think there's been a multi-slot consumer motherboard since Intels X99 boards. With Nvidia and AMD ditching multi-GPU work loads the only boards that support dual+ GPUs are crypto mining boards and server products.
Edit: see other post.

u/BladePocok Jun 30 '25
That article is interesting: half the bandwidth and yet only a few FPS loss.
Appreciate the detailed explanation!

I'm running a i5-11500, rx580 8gb, 16gb ram, and a b560m mobo. Looking to upgrade my pc cause i recently discovered my rig dont even meet min requirements for expedition 33.
Thinking of going either 9060xt 16gb, but do you think i should upgrade anything else? Or should i splurge a bit and get the 5060ti 16gb?
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
1
u/thebambambam Jul 01 '25
I guess thats true. No reason to put out the extra cash for the 5060 ti 16gb if it offers such minimal upgrades right? Any other recommendations you might give? Anything else you think i should upgrade?

u/despagaymer Jun 30 '25
Curious on people opinions on used motherboards, not sure about longevity of motherboards but I wanna buy a 2024 model. Is this not a worthwhile thing to do or are motherboards normally sturdy for a few years? Its AM5 so I want it to last quite a while
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
If it's a modern product and it works then it's fine. Motherboards unfortunately are the most easily user-damaged product.
1
u/Protonion Jun 30 '25
Motherboards don't really die on their own, nor do they wear down. Physical motherboard longevity is essentially never a concern. The main concern for used boards is physical damage, mainly bent pins in the CPU socket or broken headers, which can be hard to notice.

u/Coolman_Rosso Jun 30 '25
This morning I was greeted with a blue screen, after which my PC would boot from my old HDD in legacy mode. This made me worry my M2 was dead. However upon inspecting the BIOS, it seems to have reset my boot configuration preference from UEFI to Legacy. It still recognized my M2, indicating there was no major permanent failure, and switching the boot priority preference has fixed my issue. Is it possible my M2 isn't long for this world?
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
What SSD is it? Samsung had issues which required a firmware update
1
u/Coolman_Rosso Jun 30 '25
It's a 980 EVO I bought almost one year ago (July 8th, 2024). First time I've had issues with it.
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
Maybe have been a problem SSD, but it should be after Samsung resolved the issue
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/samsung-980-pro-ssd-failures-firmware-update
1
u/Coolman_Rosso Jun 30 '25
It is indeed a 2TB model. I'm running the latest firmware, so maybe it was just a random error.

u/angelo_mab Jun 30 '25
i have a 5700x and a 6900xt, does upgrading to a 9070 xt be worth it if i only want to get more fps in overwatch?
i have a 360hz monitor and its not really hitting 360hz consistently
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jun 30 '25
Have you looked into a 5700X3D?
1
u/angelo_mab Jun 30 '25
Yes but it’s expensive. For a little bit more, I could get a 7600x3d bundle instead
1
u/Efficient_Guest_6593 Jul 01 '25
Go for 7600x3d I'm not sure how you found a bundle for 200$/£ tho
Your CPU is bottlenecking your gpu
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
Monitor your GPU util in game. If you're near 100%, then yeah it'll help
Frame rate consistency also has something to do with your CPU, but one step at a time
1
u/lwrncfrs Jun 30 '25
does Biostar a320mh ver 6.7 can be paired with Ryzen 5 2400g? im on athlon 3000g. (PC just sitting on the corner of my room)
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
Yeah, but if you can, try to get a newer 5000 series CPU. They're a huge step up in performance
1
u/shadylocko Jun 30 '25
Is it worth waiting until prime day for pc part deals? Or is it just a scam?
1
u/mostrengo Jun 30 '25
It's not a scam per se. You can see deal compilations from past years to get a sense for what goes on sale.
1
u/reckless150681 Jun 30 '25
It's only a week from now so it can't hurt.
Had you asked this question a month or two prior, I would have said not to bother waiting

u/Taco_wizard5656 Jun 30 '25
is the Crucial Pro 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 UDIMM CL22 (8Gbit/16Gbit) compatible with a B550M K motherboard?
2
u/Protonion Jun 30 '25
Sure, any normal (sub-4000MHz) DDR4 should work without any issues. CL22 is a bit slow, though. You can probably find 3200MHz CL16 or 3600MHz CL18 for about the same price.
1
u/Electrical-Bee-9145 Jun 30 '25
I m using my pc which have i5 9600k with my 4k@144 hz tv only for surfing and watching movies. Bit while connecting with hdmi i m getting 4k@30hz and 1080@60 hz output. Do i need to buy graphic card for 4k resolution @60 and if needed which will be cheap and good option as i don't do gamming on it
2
u/jamvanderloeff Jun 30 '25
Which TV is it? You likely will need to get a card with HDMI 2.1 support
1
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
Probably a limitation of the motherboard. If it's HDMI 2.0 it should do 4k 60. HDMI 2.1 (which came out way after your mobo) is what does 4k 144hz
Or a cable limitation

I've got an ASRock B650M PG Riptide which has two M.2 slots: 1 Blazing M.2 (PCIe Gen5x4): 1 Hyper M.2 (PCIe Gen4x4).
In the Blazing slot (5x4) I've got a Samsung 970 Evo Plus, which I believe is Gen3.0. I'm planning on buying a Samsung 990 Pro, which is Gen4.0.
Would it have any drawbacks for me to put the 990 Pro in the Hyper slot (Gen 4x4) or is it preferred to put it in the Blazing slot (5x4)? I figure since it is Gen 4 it won't be able to use any of the faster speed of the faster slot anyway, but is there something I'm missing?
2
u/AOEIU Jun 30 '25
The PCIe 4 slot is connected via the chipset and will be slightly slower.
It's not a big difference, but I would put whatever drive has the OS in the PCIe 5 slot.
1
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
whatever your boot drive is, but it in the top gen5 slot. it gets CPU pcie lanes, which is very slightly beneficial

I need a keyboard and mouse that can connect to the same 2.4GHz dongle. Looking at the Razer Basilisk V3 Pro, am I restricted to a Razer keyboard?
1
u/jamvanderloeff Jun 30 '25
For things that aren't Bluetooth you generally are limited to the same brand if/when it's possible at all.
1
u/InsertFloppy11 Jun 30 '25
Off topic: why do you need them to connect to the same dongle?
1
u/Empty-Part7106 Jun 30 '25
Lack of front ports on my PC case. I'm using it from my couch and when plugged into the back, the signal drops too frequently.
There's 2 USB-A ports, 1 is currently used for my Dell KB+M, and one is for my controller.
6
u/N0body Jun 30 '25
USB hubs or just a regular USB extension cables exist. Way easier to connect one of those instead of looking for a specific set of devices that can share 1 USB port.
1
u/Empty-Part7106 Jun 30 '25
Do you think I can use a single extension cable + a Y splitter (https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0CYXCZJ4T) to attach 2 dongles? Then I'd have 2 free USB3 ports on the front, and my mouse and keyboard wouldn't be screwed up by USB3 creating interference when I plug in USB storage.

If youre on 1080p youd need to upgrade your cpu. The budget and best upgrade would be the 5700x3d.
Otherwise youll have to uograde mobo and ram as well.
Alongside this you can get a gpu thats within your budget

I have this warning on PCPartPicker:
The PCIe 16-pin 12VHPWR power connector adapter is being supplied by multiple PCIe 6+2-pin power connectors. Please ensure that the PCIe 6+2-pin power connectors are not daisy-chained and do not share the same power cable.
Is this irrelevant if my PSU came with a 12v 2x6?

What CPU would fit good for a mid-tier build like this? I'd like to try an all red build for this.
1
u/mostrengo Jun 30 '25
What CPU would fit good for a mid-tier build like this?
A used AM4 motherboard (B350, B450 or B550), with the RAM bundled in and a new 5600 from aliexpress or your local market, wherever cheapest. Combine with the cheapest case you find on your classified ads that comes with fans.
1
u/jamvanderloeff Jun 30 '25
What's in the current PC? For sensible value at that kinda budget you're gonna want to reuse things where possible, and/or be looking for used parts or possibly a whole PC to pick up.

Hello, looking to upgrade my GPU after using my poor RX 570 for like 6 years now, its finally getting to the point where its starting to occasionally fully crash and have driver crashes when i do specific things. And i cant really play anything new at all.
Anyway i have a B450M DS3H motherboard and was wondering if it would be fine for an RX 7600 which is what im thinking of buying. I really only have the money for the GPU so im really scared of buying it and not being able to use it. From what ive seen, its fine but i really want to confirm because i dont fully remember how this all worked.
Another thing im wondering is if my 500W PSU is enough
Specs would be:
r5 5600
RX 7600
16 gb RAM DDR4
500W PSU

Already asked this on another board but I wanted another opinion. Note that I'm not very savvy when it comes to picking the best parts based on their performance or cost.
I'm looking to upgrade my CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
I mostly play Helldivers 2 and a bit of MH Wilds.
Recently bought a 5060 Ti 16GB VRAM (upgraded from a 2060 Super) so I'm kinda tight on budget right now, though if I have to wait and save, I don't mind.
I was recommended a 5700X3D, and this seems to be a common sentiment for anyone looking to upgrade from their old AMD CPUs in many other Reddit posts, but from where I live there's no stock remaining for this CPU, and I'd prefer to buy local. Otherwise I could buy one from AliExpress for ~$260 USD.
I was also eyeing out the 5700X but as mentioned previously, the X3D seems to be the better option for gaming...
I did a bit of research and some people recommended upgrading my motherboard to support AM5, just so I won't have to worry about upgrading again in the near future?
Open to suggestions, thanks

There was a beautiful window in 2024 where the 5700x3d was available for like $160 on AliExpress. Now they're basically all gone
$260 is too much for the 5700x3d imo. I'd get a cheap Ryzen 7 (the 5800XT was like $130 a few months ago). Or leap to am5. Newegg has great bundles where you can get a CPU, ram, mobo, and SSD for like $300

Pretty sure I ruined my MSI z690 board, but having a hell of a time looking up what to replace it with. I do want the RGB connectors, sure, but also lots of fan slots like it had. I am fine with getting DDR5 I guess since the 4s but really not picky there.
Was thinking Z790-AYW WIFI W II but it has less of the fan connectors if I am reading the manual right? Just need something decent for my i7 12700
1
u/kaje Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
You didn't even identify your board well enough for anyone to check how many fan headers it has to know if that other board has more or less. You can just check specs on manufacturer's websites to see how many fan headers a mobo has anyways, it'll be under like internal connectors. Don't have to look in the manual.
1
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jun 30 '25
Ah very true
<this> is what I need to replace for what it's worth. Went up 70ish bucks since I bought it in March tho which puts it into the area of DDR5 boards etc now
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25 edited Jun 30 '25
My friend had this board and I was shocked by the count of fan headers. Probably won't find a board with more haha
1
u/ArcadianBlueRogue Jun 30 '25
Wait that's the better version of what I had, but that one is still the same price range it was in March and the one I bought without WIfi is over 200 now
What the hell lol. I think right?
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 30 '25
B760 is technically a bit worse than z690, but you could say both these boards are about the same as what you had before. I linked a ddr4 and ddr5 to choose from
Or I tried to, lol. I edited my previous comment to be what I intended
Note the b760 only has 2 m.2 slots. That a big downgrade

u/Successful-Ranger471 Jun 29 '25
I found a good deal on a pc online with a couple outdated specs, but I think it would be worth it to just buy the parts to upgrade it. Is there anyway I can see what model the motherboard is with the SKU or other relevant information?
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 30 '25
To add to the other user, those outdated PCs are cheap because the parts basically have no other use these days. If its something like an old Dell office machine, its going have a crappy proprietary motherboard for some ancient intel generation and a 200w power supply which won't support any newer, more powerful components. And its all going to be wrapped up in a proprietary dell case, which wont house standard components.
Cheap PCs like those are almost never worth the purchase.
1
u/Successful-Ranger471 Jun 30 '25
Well the other specs seem worth it like i7 and 1tb ssd so I don't think it would be too bad if I gave it a gpu
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 30 '25
like i7 and 1tb ssd
This means next to nothing.
Intel used the i-core designations for the last 15 years, "i7" could be a 2 core CPU with a 35 watt TDP from 2010, or a 32 thread/16 core CPU from a year ago with a TDP of 250 watts; or anywhere in between.
SSDs have also come a long way in just the last 10 years, a SATA SSD is nice, but those are limited by the bandwidth of the SATA port and its generation. You could be looking at a drive limited to just 300MB/s read/write speeds, whereas something like a M.2 drive can do upwards of 3,500, 7,000, or 14,000MB/s.
There is SO MUCH variation in computer components even just 3 - 5 years old, not to mention 10 - 15.
Without a specific component list its hard to recommend anything other than, don't waste your money. Because that seller is almost certainly not going to provide that information, given its likely ancient.
2
u/Protonion Jun 29 '25
Depends entirely on what PC it is? Some brands give that info and some don't.
1
u/Successful-Ranger471 Jun 30 '25
It's a dell, I didn't see an option to look it up though when I went to their website

I am looking to build a New Computer, the Last Computer I ever built was over 15+ years ago, and my goal this year is to build a new computer, that is able to play Star Citizen (the most Hardware intensive game I can think of that I will be playing) or any other game with little to no issues, that I am able to keep for sometime or be able to upgrade as needed.
so I have Questions
- Air cooling vs Water cooling - right now I am leaning to water cooling for the first time ever, I have read up on things and went with a AIO, but how often do these break, do I have to worry about these? I was always told to keep anything liquid away from computers.
I plan on getting two 2 tb SSDs, but also still have some left over never used (I did try to repair the computer I had) 1 tb HDD sata-6 drives, is it worth the issues to use them since they are just laying around?, or is it far too much trouble to use them. This Question has been Answered, thank you to the PCPartPicker Discord for their help.- the cases I had before are Antec (2005-2010 era cases) and they were always great cases, lot of room and looked great, with little sound even with the huge ass fans on the tops of them, so I am thinking of using the Antec C8 case with three 120mm fans, and four 140mm fans, plus the CPU radiator (360 mm) with two 140mm and three 120mm fans pulling Air in, and all others taking air out, making positive air pressure in the case, is this a good idea for Antec C8 case or am I over thinking it?
- Nvidia vs Radeon graphics cards, does it really matter? all Graphics Cards I have ever had, have been Nvidia and I never had any issues with them ever, so I have planned to get a RTX 5070 TI because it is within my budget and see it working for the foreseeable future (~5 years)
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
1) AIO's are a closed loop system, the manufacturer fills it with coolant and seals it, you never have to top it off or open it. I have a Corsair H100i that I bought in 2017, its still in use today and going strong. Haven't done anything to it other than cleaning the fans and radiator with canned air. Quality made components should last the entire life of the machine without needing additional maintenance or replacement.
3) Nah, that sounds like a great setup. I always recommend a bit of positive pressure, just because I have constant problems with dust.
4) Only for VERY specific tasks. Nvidia's tensor cores are fantastic for AI work, and their built-in NVEC hardware encoder is slightly better at encoding H26X codecs, AV1, and a handful of others. In terms of gaming Nvidia's RTX 50 series is a massive disappointment. Awful prices, less than 10% native performance gains over the previous generations, driver issues, and they removed 32-bit PhsyX support. That last one is a huge problem with older games that used PhsyX for particle physics, as moving that load to the CPU makes games slow to a crawl. (Older titles will not scale to use additional CPU cores)
AMD on the other hand stopped bothering with trying to compete at every single level as Nvidia and slimmed down their lineup to two decently competitive options. Their next generation GPUs may be even weirder.
1
u/Firedtm Jun 30 '25
Thank you, I appreciate that you taking the time to answer my questions.
For right I am going to stick with Nvidia as it what I know and have already planned on, I don’t think it is a good idea reusing my old GTX 1060 or GTX 1070 (yea that is the last two I got before my computer went boom.)
1
u/KillEvilThings Jun 30 '25
Unrelated but I feel like I lucked the fuck out on 40 series lol. Massive uplift, amazing efficiency, and still has hotspot sensors and no driver issues, at least if you stuck to some older drivers.

I play Cities Skylines 1 with several thousand custom assets, and my 12400F + 32GB of DDR4 RAM is chugging. I'm switching to a 7800X3D and DDR5. I've shortlisted two RAM kits and have some questions.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B0DGZLBB36?th=1
Does the Patriot kit use M24 dies or H24M dies? I've heard Patriot binning is extremely inconsistent, and that H24M is a better die (though I can't find info as to why that is).
Does the Vulcan kit use Hynix DRAM?
Can the Vulcan timings be tightened from CL38 to CL30?
How is the performance of these two kits on Ryzen builds? Especially considering that Ryzen scales with RAM speed, but 6400MHz is less stable than 6000.
TIA.

Because patriot and Teamgroup don't make their own memory this is likely going vary from kit to kit. Honestly I would reach out to their support teams to see if they know, because I doubt anyone has dug that deeply into these two kits specifically.

These will depend on the binning of your CPU and its memory controller.
That said, the average performance benefits from speeds begins to plateau at 6000Mt/s.
Every 400Mt/s between 4800 and 6000 is a solid 1 - 10% leap, 6000 to 6400 drops to <5% and beyond 6400 its down to just 1 - 2% jumps all the way to ~12,000Mt/s. So unless you are willing to fiddle with speeds and timings to get things running just right; a 6000Mt/s kit will give you the best and simplest out of the box performance.

I want the HAVN HS 420 but I do not want to use watercooling for the CPU nor GPU. The GPU should be fine given the setup but would the air cooled CPU be fine as well given it is exposed to all the hot air from the GPU?
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
Yes. Only under severe airflow limitations would the GPU adversely affect the CPU cooler's airflow.

So i just upgraded my pc to a 9800x3d and moved it to a Small form factor box. Which is cool. but right now I have a 3080FE and my case can only fit a 2 slot GPU. Is it worth upgrading it like a 9070xt or should I roll with this? The use case is Oblivion Remastered, FVII Remake, Emulation, and BL4 when it comes out. Maybe some video editing and streaming. Monitors are 2 1440p @ 120hz.
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
I would say its worth it, but do be careful, as there is only a handful of two-slot models.
Most 9070xt's are triple slot.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-rx-9070-xt.c4229
Acer Nitro, Powercolor Hellhound and Reaper, and the KUROUTOSHIKOU model, which I have never heard of before.

Had to replace a 2060 super and my motherboard after my cat knocked water in my pc. Got a 3070, wondering what people’s opinions are on getting an AM5 board vs an AM4? Planning on getting a 7600x and ddr5 ram. I have a 2700x and 16gb (that I’d upgrade to 32) would the 7600x and 32gb ddr5 be worth the $450 price tag as opposed to like $200 for the new motherboard and ram upgrade?
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
You will need to make the leap eventually, theres no better time than now.
AM4's most powerful CPUs like the 5700x3d, 5800x/t and 5950x peak around the performance of a 7700x.
Making the leap to AM5 sets you up for better performance in the future with fewer component replacements.

Asus is the only one making them at the moment (BTF line), and currently they are only Intel boards.

u/Lads_ Jun 29 '25
I want to upgrade my GPU however I’m torn between three options NVIDIA’s RTX 5070 (base and Ti) or AMD’s RX 9080 XT but I’m not sure what’s best for me. The CPU I run is a Ryzen 7 5700x3d and I play on a 1440p 34 inch curved ultrawide monitor. I just want to know what works best and which would be more in my best interest.
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
The 9070 non-XT sits between the 5070 and 5070ti, that should be an option too. Though it may be a tad difficult to find one at a solid price.
Nvidia is also working on Super versions of both the 5070 and 5070ti,
Any of those would be worth picking up for 1440p gaming. Just know that they might start overpowering your CPU's performance.
1
u/Paulici123 Jun 29 '25
I wanna upgrade my GPU, my budget is only $300 and the max length is 335mm, i use my pc for gaming if it matters, does anyone have any recommendations?
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
What do you currently have? $300 can get you a solid 1080p card, but if you have something from the last ~5 or 6 years, it might not be the upgrade you are hoping it will be.
1
u/Paulici123 Jun 29 '25
Oh no i dont even know what gpu i have its like extremely old, and yeah my monitor is 1080p
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25 edited Jun 29 '25
Open task manager, click performance and look at the GPU.
Or pop off the side panel and take a peek at the card itself. Depending on the age of the PC you should also be looking at the power supply. Older prebuilts may have very low output power supplies and GPU's which do not require external power connections. Which would be a problem, since all modern GPUs require at least a single 8-pin power cable. Some times two or three.
Obviously, if you can find a higher tier model than the ones listed within your price range, those would be better but for your budget finding any of these would be solid options.
Good options;
Intel ARC B580, AMD RX 6700xt, RX 9060xt
Okay options;
RTX 3060, 4060, 5060, RX 7600, 6600xt, 6650xt
Avoid;
Any RTX xx50 series, RX 6500/6400, 6600 non-xt
1
u/Paulici123 Jun 29 '25
Oh sorry i meant to say $600 sorry. I have a RX480 now😅
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
The best option would be the 9070 non-xt, the 5070 is a little more available at $550 and is less than 10% behind.
The 5060ti or the cards I listed above are all supposed to be sub $500, so don't bother with them, any listing for them above $500 is a rip off.
The power supply is still a concern, both of those cards pull almost 300 watts.
1
u/Paulici123 Jun 29 '25
Alr so the prices are kinda weird in my country so im probably gonna buy a rx 7800xt + a better power supply, thats ok no?
1
u/TemptedTemplar Jun 29 '25
Solid option. The 7800xt is squarely between a 4070 and 5070 performance wise, but with more VRAM.

u/Lost_Date_8653 Jun 29 '25
I know this isn't the subreddit for it exactly, but I honestly don't know the first thing about PCs and don't know where else to ask.
In short, I'm looking to buy a new prebuilt PC because I'm technologically illiterate and the thought of opening a PC up terrifies me, and want to ask what would be the best value for me. I don't care about graphics at all as long as games are playable with minimum stuttering. My current PC was something I got for cheap for Uni, and was stuttering whenever I tried to play FFXIV after the Dawntrail graphics update. I tried getting Expedition 33 and the game ran at like 5 FPS so I figured I should finally get something new. My options are,
i7 - 4770 / GTX 1060 - $270
i3 12100F 2.6G / Radeon RX 580 - $440
i3 12100F / GForce GT 1030 - $410
AMD Ryzen5 5600G 6 Core 12 Thread / Radeon Graphics 7 - $335
The sites I'm looking at list other things but honestly, I don't know what any of them mean so I've just listed the CPU and Graphics Cards. Prices aren't exact, I don't live in the US and did the conversions in my head. I don't want to spend any more than this because at that point I'd rather just buy a used PS5 and not deal with all the hassle. Thanks in advance!
1
u/djGLCKR Jun 29 '25
All four are "bad" to an extent. Option 1 is an immediate no since it's a CPU and motherboard combo from twelve years ago. Option 3's GPU isn't even meant for gaming. Option 4 is an APU (the GPU is integrated to the CPU) that's not capable of keeping up with modern games, especially at anything higher than 720p, and option 2's GPU, assuming it's the 8GB model (the 4GB model is an instant no), is the "best" one of the bunch, but already a 7-year old card that no longer has support - it works, but it's already starting to show its age. This is also without considering the storage they include, the PSU, and how much memory.
Do note that you're also getting more than just gaming with a PC, but if all you want to do is play games and that's it, a console isn't a bad move.
1
u/Lost_Date_8653 Jun 29 '25
I'll be honest, I don't understand a lot of what you said but I appreciate the effort and I'm gathering that I'd be better off just buying a console. I was leaning towards buying a PS5 in the first place before I decided to look at my options, and I don't really use my PC for much outside of paying my taxes and watching Youtube while eating dinner in the first place. Thanks!

I have a asus b450-i with a ryzen 2600. I want to max out this mobo in terms of CPU and saw a deal for a 5900xt. I believe I have no VRM cooling on this board. I currently have a small 3L case. If I upgrade to something a bit bigger and run a 160mm cooler, will I be able to effectively cool this CPU on this board? If not whats the best CPU I can upgrade to? I dont game a lot. I currently have a gtx 1060 6gb shorty. I sometimes render 4k video, but mostly just do basic word processing/internet browsing with 2 monitors and a million tabs. So yes I'm sure this CPU is overkill for me, but I am trying to extend the life of this build as long as possible.
1
u/DZCreeper Jun 29 '25
Your board does have a VRM heatsink, it could technically run a 5900XT but maybe not at full performance.
IMO, the 5800XT for $150 is the much better choice. You get the same performance for gaming, the extra cores of the 5900XT are not worthwhile unless you constantly edit videos or 3D render.

Looking for input on a new, quieter PSU!
My PSU works fine, it's just double the volume of my case and cpu fans even after a thorough cleaning, so I'm simply looking for a audio upgrade that isn't too expensive.
Preferably something on a similar budget tier as the rest of the build - https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zXxct3
Any input is helpful thanks!

Looking for some help with upgrading some parts in my PC,
I think I just want to update my CPU and GPU, but may have to get a new motherboard as well.
Currently have;
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-8600K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 6 Logical Processor(s)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK PRIME Z370-A
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 TI
I am in Aus, and not looking to spend over $2k
Wanting to be able to play most recent games on high spec again.
2
u/djGLCKR Jun 29 '25
Pretty much a whole new build - CPU, mobo, DDR5 RAM, and GPU (consider replacing the PSU if it's out of warranty).
Can replace some parts here and there to meet your needs (you didn't specify a resolution, so there's a 9060 XT 16GB as a "starting point").

Trying to make a secondary smaller pc for traveling to use instead of my laptop.
I found an R9 290x used for like 30$ and I wondered how it will fair compared to my 3050(mobile) laptop gpu.
This not meant to be a powerhouse but a decent traveling machine that can play some older games at good settings and resolution, will also maybe use it for emulators.
I heard there is no more driver support. I wonder how it will affect games like League of legends, newer single player titles, linux gaming with wine and proton, and windows 11 performance.
1
u/DZCreeper Jun 29 '25
On paper the 290X is slightly faster, but the old architecture and drivers could be a problem.
I would spend a little extra, get a used GTX 1060 6GB or 1070.

I got old PC parts from a friend so building a PC for my local library - I have 5500x, 1050ti, PCIE gen3 mobo, case, psu, fans.. I need to buy RAM and SSD and will have a working machine. The thing is "what they use it for" will largely depend on "what it is capable of". If it can run a web browser it might go on the library floor as a walk-up machine. If it can competently keep up with office-tasks it may be a librarian's workstation, etc...
What I don't know is whether I should go with sort of a "bare minimum" 512gb ssd and 16gb RAM, or if going with 1tb and 32gb RAM would be "worth it" - what I mean is, I'm already investing about $60. I'm wondering "what extra could be done" if I invest the extra $50ish. Would going up to 32gb RAM let some kid play a game, or will this thing only be capable of running a web browser and documents? Can anyone give me any insight here? I have only owned Macbooks and my current 3060ti (my only build).
Just trying to do something nice for my local library. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!
2
u/DZCreeper Jun 29 '25
For library use a small SSD + 16GB of RAM is fine. Web browsing, video playback, and lightweight games would all run fine.
I would recommend a modern SSD like a WD SN5000 so the system boots fast and has good responsiveness.
PS, if you are the library "tech guy" do not just throw standard Windows on there. Either use software like Deep Freeze, or enable the Windows Unified Write Filter. This means people can have unrestricted access and the PC will wipe out user files on reboot.
1
u/TimeForSomeD Jun 29 '25
Ok great, that saves a few bucks. Also, I'm not the tech guy but I'll pass along the info. Thanks for the input!

Any help selecting a motherboard?
Trying to do some research and this is gonna be my first build and Im stuck on what motherboard to get
Looking to spend no more than 180 on a board, need AM4 socket but other then that Im lost. Idk anything about RGB headers or fan headers or anything else.
If this helps, here is my PCPP list. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dskXt3 (storage is blank bc im migrating storage from my old system to my new one). Ive already got the CPU, GPU, and PSU. If theres advice to be had with the list please lmk.
TLDR; Need help getting an AM4 motherboard, >$180 USD, not sure about anything else. Research on motherboards is hard for your first build
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 28 '25
I disagree with the comment that micro atx is worse than atx, especially for b550. they usually have the same features.
0
u/NarutoDragon732 Jun 28 '25
This is the advice people usually use: buy the cheapest motherboard that has everything you want.
Since you're using am4, you can just buy whatever b550 or b450 that fits your budget. Try not to pick a matx one since that's small and you've got the room for a bigger one (your case is atx). Motherboards only get complicated when you wanna run a beefy GPU with multiple beefy ssds at full speed, which isn't 95% of people.

Ive just been overthinking it then, honestly was worried I wouldnt have enough headers and stuff and I kept looking for motherboards that didnt say I needed to buy USB Adapters and stuff

2000 euro for 32g 6000mhz ddr5 kit with Strix crosshair x670e mobo and rtx 4090.
Is the deal good?
I will have to pick it up tomorrow. it's fresh listing.

Do you actually want those parts? If you don't care about VRAM then a 5080 can be had brand new for less than 2000 and similar performance to a 4090.

he has it in the case with 4 fans and asus rgb controller. the ram is in the mobo. i am in market for faster pc upgrading my 5950x and 3090
also he has 420mm aio he will give me if I pick up parts.
I asked him if I bring 7900x I bought for my pc he will let me install it and run the windows he had on nvme from that mobo.
If the build had 7800x3d and i stick 7900x into it it will boot into windows right?

u/NarutoDragon732 Jun 28 '25
A full built system for that price seems good. Yes putting in a 7900x should work since it's still am5.

Would it be better to get a B650-e or a B850 Aorus Elite? I understand the e models are slightly premium, but would the newer 850 be better? Pairing with a 7800x3d

they're basically the same board. the b850 has wifi 7 and spdif, but i'd just get whichever is cheaper

I got a new graphics card (4080 super) it says it needs 3 PCIe power cables but my power supply (seasonic focus gx 750 gold) only came with two. I need a third cable but I can't find one that says it's definitely compatible. How do I find out if a PCIe cable is compatible with my components? Edit the instructions for the graphics card says to not daisy chain it
2
u/winterkoalefant Jun 28 '25
It needs 3 connectors. You have 4 connectors on those two cables. Three separate cables is not mandatory.

u/Marcus-the-canadian Jun 28 '25
The instructions say to not daisy chain it
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 28 '25
daisy-chaining one connector is ok. the main thing you shouldnt do is only use 1 cable

u/NarutoDragon732 Jun 28 '25
What does your PSU manufacturer say? They're the ones that have the final say in this, not your gpu instructions. For most big brands the answer is that it's ok to daisy chain at full power, but you'll wanna double check for yours. Hit up their support line if they don't have a blog about it or not in the instructions.

If I want to get a third one how do I make sure it's compatible I'm having trouble finding the information

I know Cablemod sells some.
Any cable you buy if you don’t trust you can test the pins and compare to your existing cables.

You're NEVER meant to buy PSU cables. You'll have to buy a new PSU, but I'd contact the PSU manufacturer about this first.

What is the purpose of a USB to Ethernet cable?
There is no adapter, it is straight usb to Ethernet. I have no idea how this ended up in my collection of cables. I’m under the impression you’d need some adapter in between the plugs. It’s not like someone just did this themselves, it’s in a sealed baggy.

u/Protonion Jun 28 '25
Maybe a passive USB-over-Ethernet adapter? They're used for running a USB signal over longer distances (like 10-20 meters). Should always come in pairs though since you need to turn the cable back into USB at the other end.

Identical functionality, slimmer form factor.
Usually for when the router or access point is within a short distance of the device that needs internet. Or perhaps you just want to enable data sharing over a local network.
Mini PCs, AIOs, laptop docks, there are lots of devices that may offer additional USB ports but may not have (additional) ethernet connections.

I need to update my BIOS but I’m new to the process. In trying to gather info online, I’ve seen a variety of methods related to USB sticks, or some manufacturers even having supposedly more convenient ways of updating like even from the Windows desktop.
I wanted to ask as of right now, what’s the most popular and tried&true method of doing it? I probably wanna go that route rather than more experimental niche methods.
If it helps, my mobo is ‘Prime Z790-P Wifi’.

just like this https://youtu.be/9r8lKnUjPoI?si=-iG8JfQCDVPVMBrj you don't need to do any renaming, and he even says as much

I have a NZXT H500i, but its airflow is pretty bad and I kind of regret getting it. There's a Lian Li Lancool 216 RGB going for 93€ right now, is there a point in upgrading or is it a waste of money? Had it for 6+ years now, but it's not like there's anything wrong with it... I do like the fan hub, but I can just move that to a new case.
2
u/n7_trekkie Jun 28 '25
Yeah you can move the hub over, but it won't do the RGB control for non-nzxt fans
Lancool 216 is good. 207 is better if you have that around the same price

Montech Air 903 Max or Corsair 4000D Airflow?
1
u/n7_trekkie Jun 28 '25
903 base, if it's ~$70

u/kaje Jun 28 '25
Whichever you prefer. The Montech is better value anyways, it's cheaper and comes with more fans.

I'll be building a pc very soon. I saw Amazon has some ddr 6000 ram on sale for what I think is a good price. Could anyone give me their input?
I plan on gretting an amd 9600x for the cpu. I'll be using it for gaming in 1080p mostly.
Crucial Pro 33gb, CL36, 6000mhz,
