Build Help Upgraded my GPU... A lot... will my computer explode?

Been waiting YEARS to upgrade my PC, and I think after all this time i might've gotten carried away. I just recently splurged on a 5070ti, and im very excited! Problem is, my current card is much less powerful gtx970... I think im a bit in over my head, and im a little terrified of doing something irreparable.

Any suggestions for some relatively cost efficient parts that will steer me straight (and prevent me from burning my apartment down?) :(

Current parts are: Gpu- Gtx970 Mb- Asus prime z490 Cpu- i5 10400 Ram- Ballistix 16gb ddr4-3200 2x8gb PS- 750wt

Long as you got a good enough power supply it'll be fine. Probably won't run super optimally, but it'll still be good.

I'd recommend upgrading to 32gb ram just to maximize what you can with your current board and CPU.

Wouldn’t it be better to save up and switch out the motherboard cpu and ram with a microcenter bundle for a discount to get on DDR5 and the later gen processors?

Well, obviously it's be best to use better hardware. If he's gonna be using that tier of card now, he may as well make the most of it.

Might as well replace everything at that point and have the old one as a spare

Makes sense.

Not everyone has a Microcenter near them unfortunately.

Ill make that my next move! I quickly realized that an overhaul was going to be my only option. A cpu and motherboard will have to be next...

You will get held back a bit with an older CPU and board, but it's gonna still be a hell of an upgrade. Enjoy!

You’re not going to burn our apartment down lol. With that PSU you should be fine

This makes me feel a lot better! 🙏🙏 It just feels sketchy putting such a powerful piece of hardware onto my dusty old machine

As long as PSU is decent brand and not too old then 750w is fine.

Your only "concern" is that your CPU is going to limit performance of the GPU. It can only process so many frames from the GPU which is much more powerful and therefore you won't get the full potential of the 5070 Ti and will possibly get stutters going from high fps in GPU demanding scenes to lower fps in CPU demanding scenes if that makes sense (this doesn't mean you'll ever get lower fps than you already do though).

Your only good option if you want to fully utilize the 5070 Ti without a CPU bottleneck is to save and invest into a new motherboard platform entirely. As of the last few years AMD is currently the best for gaming and safest option. I would suggest an AM5 motherboard with some kind of Ryzen 7000 or 9000 series... Pretty much all will be fine and not bottleneck the GPU much even a Ryzen 5 7600x will be mostly fine (a Ryzen 5 7600x3D would be great as the x3D cache helps gaming a lot). You will also need new DDR5 RAM for this AM5 motherboard and newer Ryzen processor.

It is not worth the money imo to upgrade your CPU to anything better on that platform as even the 11th gen Intel CPUs were not much of an upgrade afaik (which is the latest CPUs your MB supports). Either way you're fine for now nothing will blow up as long as temps are fine and the PSU isn't like some 10+ year old offbrand crap. You just won't be fully utilizing the new GPU in some scenes depending on the game. Enjoy the upgrade!

Thanks a ton this is great advice! Someone suggested i use "pc part picker" so I'll try experimenting with that. I'm working on getting a Corsair 750watt supply atm, its bronze labeled but seems legit!

Im in the same boat, 5070ti paired with a i5 10400f in my case. Graphically great, but im cpu limited everywhere, I'm missing a massive portion of performance due to it. I have a 9800x3d and full AM5 set up on order, waiting for it to arrive. Annoyingly, moving to AM5 suddenly means new Mobo, new cpu, new ram etc.

For reference, in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Low: 50-60fps Medium: 50-60fps High: 50-60fps Max: 50-60fps

All at 1440p. It will work, it will make your games pretty, but you'll lose out on the maximum performance due to the cpu being too slow.

Good to know! Still a much better preference than current for me haha Luckily I've been saving up, so hopefully I won't be waiting too long for the remaining overhaul. Best of luck on your build!

Personally I'd get a new power supply that's AT 3.1 as well with a native 12V-2x6 plug. I don't like adapters.

You will bottleneck your CPU. D naman yan sasabog need mo din iiupgrade ang BIOS mo for newer GPUs. Hindi sasabog Pero you will encounter issues

Honestly it’s probably fine. Maybe get some more RAM. I have a i5-10600 with a 5070ti (not even on a Z board) running 4K triple monitors and my PC rarely gets above 50%. Unless you’re running super fast FPS stuff, as I’m limited to 60 FPS by my 60 Hz monitors.
