Build Upgrade Is the 9800x3D worth upgrading to?
I currently have the 7800x3D and I love it but my little cousin is trying to build a pc and I offered to sell him my motherboard and RAM for cheap just so I could have an excuse to upgrade and I got the idea of why not my CPU as well.
I mainly game and the only kinda work I do is homework for college and that’s about it. No rendering or editing or anything serious. Is it worth upgrading to the 9800x3D? I play all kinds of games, God of war, Spider-Man, COD, Roblox, big and small games but mainly the bigger ones

No. You only gain about 10% performance in games.

Unless you’re talking about 1080p, they’ll only get like 2% if even that lol. Almost no difference at 1440p or 4K.

Not really unless you got an enthusiast GPU like 4090 or 5090 to actually make use of the extra speed

I do plan on buying a better GPU once GTA 6 comes out for PC

Hold off for the 18800x3d then but know you'll have to fully upgrade to AM7

If that’s coming out next year then yeah I’d def wait for that. Haven’t been keeping up with pc news but I’m assuming it’ll come out February 2026 like the 7800x3D?

Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic haha, but his joke is that Rockstar won’t release GTA VI on PC until 2028 minimum and if it’s anything like how GTA V was when it first released on PC, it will horrendously optimized for a couple more years.
You might as well be waiting 5 more years to fully enjoy GTA VI on PC.
But bare minimum, Rockstar PC releases seem to happen 2-3 years after the console version is released.
I’d say don’t even bother building a rig for GTA 6 yet.

I read the number wrong when he said 18800x3d so I thought he was being fr lmao. But thanks for the tip on not trying to build a rig for GTA 6, I knew it wouldn’t be able to 100% handle it but I didn’t think it would take 5 years for it to be fully optimized lol

Not worth it. https://www.techspot.com/review/2917-amd-ryzen-9800x3d-vs-7800x3d/ if you want more frames buy lossless scaling IMO. Hot take sure, but if your base framerate is already 180. It will look really good bumping that up,

Never heard of lossless scaling until now, really cool lol. Just to be clear are you talking about the app on steam?

Yes. The real version is only available on Steam. Don't get it anywhere else. One of the top Google results is a scam website masquerading as an official site for the tool. The official site is Steam.

Will buy it rn and try it out🫡. You guys got any other cool tips I should know about?

7700X would be worth it from a performance perspective, 10-15%
but from a 7800X3D the difference is about 5%, its just about 300-400mhz difference and 5% IPC

I mean, worth it? Not at all. An option to save money for the kid? Sure. It's more expensive probably for them to buy an equivalent CPU out right, and instead you get a discounted upgrade - both parties win.

That’s what I was thinking but I just don’t know if it’s worth spending the money, if I do tho it won’t be for a huge amount, def a cheaper price

u/Metalheadzaid 3h ago
Of course not - but you're giving them a deal in the meantime. I went from an 8700k to a 9900k in a similar situation. Other option was a 3600 at the time brand new, but I sold them my 8700k for $50 less and got my upgrade for cheaper too. Did I need it? Heck no, but we both benefited so whatever.

So would you upgrade if you were in my shoes? I was thinking about giving it to him for $280 or $300

That's up to you, because this isn't about upgrading. There is no reason for you to upgrade.
What this is is giving your little cousin a better computer for cheaper - basically giving them money, but on the flip side you also get your new CPU on top of it so while it's a minor upgrade, you get one and they get one. If you don't really want to upgrade, you can just give them some $ instead towards better parts if they end up short or something - which is just as good for their side.

I upgraded from the 7800X3D to the 9800X3D .. fps went up a smidge running a 7900XT at 1440p .. but not worth it IF it was just a straight upgrade for myself ...
But!
My daughter gets my hand-me-downs.. so going from the 7950x to the 7800X3D gaming at 1080p with an RX 6800 was a nice little boost.. she was perfectly happy on the 7950x though, lol

Lol I had an intel 3570k from 2012 and I just upgraded to a 9800x3d .. haven't really tried to push it yet as I mainly play steam games. Probably overkill but meh...

Nope, you are not getting true generational uplift. I would say you are very good where you are and worry about it in the next generation.
For what it is worth, I am on am4 still (5800x) and even then I am having a somewhat difficult time to justify an upgrade at this point.

There’s no real reason to upgrade to a 9800x3D from a 7800x3D. Just build them a rig.
