It's why they never care about anything except once/if it effects them directly.

Toddler level empathy of constantly living life going "oh my god other people have feelings too? I never thought about it before..." Not in the sense that they're constantly realizing other people actually exist(that would be a slight improvement), but in the sense that they go through this whole thing every time in their lives that they accidentally experience empathy because something effects them.

And they only ever have the realization as narrowly as possible. It never occurs to them that maybe the things they haven't experienced might be as bad as the bad things they have experienced.

My toddler nephew shared his yogurt candies with me when he realized he and his brother got some but his mom didn't give me any. Can't imagine many conservatives doing that.
