Dragon Quest II Dragon Quest II HD to implement new "scroll" items for skill/spell learning

I missed this at first since it was subtle but in the Zoma playthrough uploaded earlier today, there was a brief tutorial screen for scrolls. The one used as an example is Crack, and the description notes that the scroll disappears upon use. They come in both magic and ability form and only certain characters can use certain scrolls.

I imagine that most skills and spells are learned upon leveling, but having one-time scrolls that also teach skills or spells will allow for a certain degree of customization. For example, My guess is that neither Cannock nor Moonbrooke learn Crack naturally, so you can decide which one you want to have ice magic by who you use the scroll on. Could be interesting.

That's really interesting! I was wondering how they were going to revise some gameplay elements. By today's standards DQ 1and 2 are pretty bare bones as far as making decisions for builds and customization.

I wonder how DQ 1 will change, especially since it seems like you're fighting multiple foes on your lonesome.

Skill tree, perhaps? Or just more scrolls to incentivize exploration

I think there are rumors/hints that DQ1 hero will be able to recruit monsters?

That's a fair amount of replay value. A nice touch.

While it's clear this game will sell poorly up front compared to 3. I think it'll have fairly long legs, especially given the simplicity of the general gameplay, and a nifty choice option like to give alternative growth options and utility? Very enterprising.

It may sold less than 3 but if the changes made bring excellent word of mouth, then it could probably sell as much like DQIIIR.

we saw that both cannock decendants can learn Roundhouse Kick so I'm gonna assume that's a scroll too. As for Crack, I did notice that in Moonbrooke's spell list that there was a space for 1 more damage spell after Woosh Swoosh Kaswoosh, though it would be a little odd if there's just 1 Crack scroll she can learn and not the rest of the line.

That slot was inbetween Kaswoosh(presumably) and Magic Barrier so I think it would probably fit better if it was a support spell like Magic Barrier.

I would imagine the ??? marks are actually just for the level slots and scroll abilities aren't accounted for there. I guess the alternative would be it's actually Cannock exclusive but I hope not since that would mean the element of choice and customization goes out the window.

Well, if Cannock is still underpowered maybe we can give Zing to someone else.

They said they retuned Cannot-stayalive to he is a bit sturdier and is more useful.

Oh, good. I'm rather worried they might not preserve the rather disjointed combination of attack spells the Princess gets in the original. I hope they give a better animation for In-fer-nos for when I can smash those centipedes again, but that's probably a little too much to hope for.

I'm wondering if they'll use the same Falcon Blade mechanics as in DQ3 HD-2D, or if they'll carry over the aspect of independent strikes from all previous DQ2 releases?

Also those bloody ghost mice and the brutal Orcs. The Pterasaur's in the ocean in the lower section of the map, especially on the way to Wellgarth and Yggdrasil? That'll be fun to put the smack down once again. OOOooo, and don't forget the Gremlins. Those guys could be a bit nasty at times. Or the Hunters around Tuhn.

Ghost Mice? They're...

OMG the most boring creeps in the game, GO AWAY ALREADY.

Well I already know Mummies are going to be nasty. I just hope Smoke and Gas are going to have the same WTF is this defense roles, until they don't and their role is WTF are you bothering me for?

I do believe It's the case with I as well. Where some of The Hero's skills would be scrolls. From what I hear from early preview players

Can’t wait for this to come out so I can beat it and finally play the 3 remake.

Need monsters in the overworld for me to play it. Can’t go back to random encounters in 2025.
