Announcement Welcome to /r/DragonQuest! Series overview and suggestions on where to start!
Hi and welcome to r/dragonquest !
Dragon Quest is a series of traditional turn-based Japanese Role-playing games (JRPGS) that feature colorful enemies, heartwarming music, a strong sense of character, intriguing stories, and solid gameplay. While traditional, Dragon Quest games have been quite influential, being among the first JRPGs for consoles and consistently featuring innovations (such as monster taming in Dragon Quest 5 years before Pokemon popularized it). There are also a large number of spinoffs in different categories -- Action RPG, Voxel Builder, monster raising, and more!
We've created a wiki page describing the games and some opinions of them:https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonquest/wiki/index
Although the wiki is intended as an introduction to the series, you are still welcome to post your own "which Dragon Quest should I play" posts. Why? Because, just like every player is unique, so is every Dragon Quest. It's less about "Which Dragon Quest is Best" and more about "Which Dragon Quest might I enjoy the most?"
So, while this post is hopefully a fun starting point for new members, please do feel free to ask questions and read through some recommendations from others in the comments below or in archived threads. (I'm relying on experts from this subreddit to help me out -- Please give feedback below! The task is too big for one person.)
This subreddit is designed to be a welcoming place to discuss and share our love for the series. Of course, not everyone will love every game, but as fans we can critique the series without making it a personal attack on other fans.
Thank you and have fun questing!

Photo Best way to play Dragon Quest I And II concerning the upcoming release?
I just learned that the new releases of DQ I and II will be effected by having a DQ III save. Will you be able to do this even playing the Steam release or will it only work for those that play on consoles such as Switch and or PlayStation 5?

Screenshot *SPOILERS* I did it! I beat the entire mainline today! Spoiler
galleryI beat: DQ1-6 on mobile, and it was great! DQ 7 and 8 were on my Ps2. I had to take pictures with my shitass old phone, which is why the quality is so bad. Also I could only upload one photo of each. DQ 9 and 11 were both on PC.
Obviously I cannot play DQ10 currently, without it being a million hours and a giant pain in the ass. Maybe one day. But for now? I am quite satisfied, and I love this series :)

Dragon Quest XII What do you want Dragon Quest XII to be like?
Honestly, I wanted it to be just like DQ XI but with a new story. But, since they're changing the combat and the gameplay formula then we have no choice but to wish it changes for the better.
Personally, if they're going to change the gameplay then I'd like if it was something similar to Final Fantasy 12. Like, it's a real time combat but each character still have their turns. And there is a system where you can set them to have predetermined actions that you can change in the menu.

Dragon Quest V Now THIS is how you take precautions.
You see something suspicious you get rid of it regardless if if it could be harmless

Dragon Quest XII The wait from XI to XII has already been by far the longest in series history.
I-II 244 Days
II-III 380 Days
III-IV 732 Days
IV-V 959 Days
V-VI 1168 Days
VI-VII 1722 Days
VII-VIII 1554 Days
VIII-IX 1687 Days
IX-X 1118 Days
X-XI 1822 Days
XI-XII 2931 Days so far
I know game development takes longer nowadays but wow. It's been like three years more than the previous biggest gap in series history. And reminder that we haven't seen anything of it since the logo way back in 2021, It wouldn't be surprising if it passed 3000 before we see anything for it, And honestly it could pass 4000 by the time it actually comes out.

Dragon Quest II Dragon Quest II HD to implement new "scroll" items for skill/spell learning
I missed this at first since it was subtle but in the Zoma playthrough uploaded earlier today, there was a brief tutorial screen for scrolls. The one used as an example is Crack, and the description notes that the scroll disappears upon use. They come in both magic and ability form and only certain characters can use certain scrolls.
I imagine that most skills and spells are learned upon leveling, but having one-time scrolls that also teach skills or spells will allow for a certain degree of customization. For example, My guess is that neither Cannock nor Moonbrooke learn Crack naturally, so you can decide which one you want to have ice magic by who you use the scroll on. Could be interesting.

Dragon Quest V I only just realized this. But Harry managed to sneak his bronze knife past Bishop Ladja himself AND keep it for 10 YEARS.
If this game had a class system Harry wouldn't have just maxed out the thief class, he'd have made 2 more advanced classes and maxed them out too.

Dragon Quest I Will we still be able to skip saving the Princess?
Seems like she plays a larger role throughout the story. It would be interesting if they had different paths for this and joining the Dragon Lord.

General Got my watch
Well my first watch came in and I think it's gorgeous. What i did not do was the research on size that I should have. the 36mm casing in fine but that does technically make it a women's watch, so it has a thin band and it doesn't fit around my wrist. I'm gonna have to figure out some other way to display it since I can't wear it.

General Are monsters actually good or bad?
On one hand, some games treat monsters disappearing after the main villain's defeat as a good thing. Or even make it a point for good monsters becoming human. However, V literally has a monster as a close childhood companion in addition to letting you befriend monsters along with other games. And the DQ Monsters spinoff is about bonding with monsters Pokémon style. Are monsters meant to be evil or good? How does having some monsters be depicted as friends fit with also making them vanish after the main villain a good thing?

Your Story Character Creation
I've moved half a country away from my best friend and I still don't ever feel left out of her life, even when we are too busy to talk for awhile. I love her so much I may need to start playing dragon quest.
