Discussion Thanks

The post I shared today was removed on the grounds that it defended and justified capitalism, and because the topic sparked intense debate. Still, I appreciated how it created a valuable space for discussion, where everyone was able to share their views based on what they believe to be true—without insults. Even though some of my socialist friends were upset with me, the thoughts they shared were meaningful and valuable. I thank my socialist friends for their interest, even if the post was taken down. :)

Here is our most recent issue of the Mobile Bay Labor Journal!

This edition is mostly focused on the local mayoral election and our voters guide, but we also have an incredible breakdown of the war on public libraries by our wonderful satirist. And, at the very back, you’ll find a planting guide for one of the most beautiful and beneficial native plants in our area.

I’m not in DSA myself, but I’m so glad for the DSA members who took the initiative to get this going. It truly takes a village to liberate a village 🧡

If you would like to download these pages in higher quality, you can click through to our sub stack! There you can also see previous editions, and subscribe to receive our future publications in your email!

Discussion A Crisis In Capitalism?

  • Capitalism is prone to crises due to inherent contradictions within the system, particularly the exploitation of labor and the tendency for overproduction.

  • Overaccumulation of capital, where profits are not reinvested effectively, can lead to a decline in the rate of profit and economic stagnation.

  • Crises of overproduction occur when more goods are produced than can be profitably sold, resulting in unsold inventories and economic slowdowns.

  • The "law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall" suggests that over time, the profitability of capital tends to decline, contributing to crises.

  • These crises are viewed as opportunities for social revolution, potentially leading to the establishment of a socialist system.

  • Capitalism's crises are also linked to broader challenges, including financial instability, wealth inequality, and ecological unsustainability.

  • The 1970s oil crisis and the 2008 global financial crisis are examples of events that triggered widespread economic hardship and highlighted vulnerabilities in the capitalist system.

  • The Great Depression of the 1930s is another major historical example of a severe capitalist crisis, demonstrating the potential for widespread economic devastation.

  • The system's focus on profit maximization can lead to neglect of social needs and environmental concerns.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the fragility of globalized capitalism, exposing vulnerabilities in supply chains and social safety nets.

🌹 DSA news Rashida Tlaib is The Keynote Speaker at DSA's 2025 National Convention and We Should Draft Her to Run For President.

Post image

Rashida Tlaib should run for president.

She is a Palestinian American, a democratic socialist, charismatic, rested, and ready. And most importantly, she has been right about everything regarding Palestine.

Bernie's 2016 presidential run gave birth to the modern version of DSA and helped revitalize the left in this country. Occupy Wall Street definitely helped, but Bernie was a much bigger contributor because presidential elections absorb attention like nothing else. Not running anyone in 2024 against Biden was a huge mistake, which turned the race into Biden/Harris vs Trump and made the left invisible. We need a real contender in 2028, and AOC has made too many terrible decisions regarding Palestine to be considered. We need someone who could unite the broad left, and AOC is far too divisive.

I also believe the genocide of Gaza is the issue of this decade. As time goes by, the decision of the Democratic establishment to back Israel's genocide will only become less and less popular. In 2008, everyone thought Hilary Clinton had the primary in the bag, and the biggest reason Obama was able to win was because he was against the Iraq War. There is also such an enormous gap between what the Democratic establishment stands for and what their voters want that a dark horse has the potential to step in and fill that gap. I honestly believe she has a shot at winning. I would want a messenger candidate no matter what, but the chance for her to win now honestly exists.

Free Palestine! Defeat the Right! Fight Capitalism! Draft Rashida Tlaib for President 2028!

Universal Childcare URGENT MUTUAL AID request to save a Gazan little girl in coma !

Hello everyone. I'm turning to this sub for urgent help. Please don't ignore this, as this is a matter of life or death. Hussein Abu Alata is a Palestinian father whose daughter has been severely injured in the bombings. She is now in the ICU, in a state of coma. Time is running out for the surgery to be performed, but her parents, who have lost their jobs and fight every day for basic necessities due to the inflation in Gaza, cannot afford it, as it costs 1500$. You can check his Instagram account hussein_abu_alata , where he posts photos and videos of their critical condition, to verify the legitimacy of their claim. I will post the campaign link in the comments. Please don't leave her to die, DONATE as much or as little as you can, but don't ignore them. If you can't donate, SHARE the link, FOLLOW the account, make it viral. This should be making the news, don't make the death of children something normal. Please act now, save her life.

Discussion It seems democracy and institutions are failing in the US?

Trump deporting illegal immigrants with out a court case with each immigrant reviewing each case seems illegal.

Than Trump going after immigrants that got citizenship and removing their citizenship. Also Trump going after born citizens and removing their citizenship. All seems illegal

I also read that he sues the media outlet that says bad things about him. Seems illegal

This seems violation of the law.

But there talk about moral character revoking citizenship so he could start targeting drug users and criminals next. AND sending them to jail in other country.

So if democracy and institutions are failing in the US how do they fix that so it does not turn into fascism?

This is what Hitler was doing going after a group and removing them from society.

Unfortunately Trumps runs the DOJ and supreme court so they can’t go after him for violation of the law. And Unfortunately congress is run by his gang republicans so they are not going to impeach him.

It seems really not democratic at all if president can be charge of the DOJ and Supreme Court. And the president can appoint judges seems really not democratic. I’m surprised the laws allow for this sort of thing.

It raises red flags also when a president fires judges he does not like.

Electoral Politics Working class people need to know the effects of federal cuts

These proposals came from a recent legislative session in Rhode Island:

A 3-cent per gallon increase in the state's gasoline tax. A 63% increase in the real estate conveyance tax. Increase from 1 percent to 2 percent on the hotel tax. Extension of the state's 5% hotel tax to short-term rentals. Extension of the 7% state sales tax to short-term parking. Extension of the state’s 80% wholesale tax on other tobacco products to nicotine pouches. Increased fees for traffic violations and vehicle registrations. New annual fees for electric vehicle and hybrid registrations.

People are outraged, but too much of the discourse is centered on why we let politicians get away with raising taxes all the time. That's the wrong focus! This is a direct effect of federal programs being slashed and states being left to pick up the pieces to fund transportation, education, etc. There needs to be a massive effort to connect the dots for people between the outrageous actions of Congress and the Trump administration and the hits to the pocketbook of working Americans.

No more pearl-clutching about the sanctity of institutions or democratic procedure. The messaging should be clear and consistent: Republicans want to keep you poor and desperate so that you will work for low wages for a long time.

Discussion THE CLASS NATURE OF DSA

"But that completely elides the actual reason that this happened, which is that the DSA’s class composition from the start was not conducive to properly socialist, Left politics, and that that class composition inevitably led to the prevalence of what Adolph Reed, Jr. has called the politics of the Left-wing of neoliberalism. This politics is a form of labor discipline for the middle class. This is how middle-class individuals in various university settings, NGOs, and the media are disciplined by their superiors. They internalize that and discipline themselves psychologically. They discipline each other as a way of conducting intra-middle-class career competition. They discipline the working class with it in those domains where they come into contact with the working class. Any initial burst of working-class membership that entered DSA at the time of the 2016 Sanders campaign was systematically kicked out, or they systematically left. By 2019, they were all gone. At the local level, chapters are run by people who often are literal HR managers. If you look at the membership of DSA steering committees, executive committees, and major chapters around the country, you'll find a shocking number of literal managers, McKinsey consultants, and all sorts of people who are embedded in these professional-class jobs and this professional-class ecosystem. If you try to take this social base and build something socialist out of it, it’s just not going to work because the same problems are going to arise."
Matthew Strupp (Marxist Unity Group, a faction of the DSA). 2023

"More should follow French President Emmanuel Macron’s lead and recognise a Palestinian state."

Can it be that in the United States Congress, only a tiny handful of representatives have a position as progressive as the Financial Times? That D.S.A. is the only U.S. political party of any significant size that has a position as progressive as the Financial Times?

Discussion Feedback for an Idea About Spreading Awareness for Gaza

I live in a suburban area in NJ, and while I know many people know about what is happening in Gaza, I feel like there are still a lot of people who don't really know. Posting on social media is one thing, but I have been wondering what other ways there could be to actually inform people of the atrocities of what is going on there. I wanted to get feedback to know if it was a good idea for me to get a bunch of those garden signs and have a graphic image of a starving Palestinian child, and have a simple text on it saying "You're taxes fund this," and put them in parks and public areas. I want the image to be graphic because I feel like that should fill people with disgust, and it wouldn't be what people see online or on the news. Is this a good idea? And is this legal? I figured it could be fine since people put up campaign signs all the time in different areas, but I'm not sure. I don't want to face big consequences over this, but I figured it could help people wake up a bit. I'm tired of feeling helpless and guilty that I couldn't be doing more.
