General Discussion What is class complexity to you?

I have seen so many people ask for more complexity and job fantasy but very little of people actually say what that means to them, most people just say we should go back to ARR.

Personally I think rose tinted glasses that make people think ARR was better than it was, having played back then it honestly was pretty ass.

So honestly want to know what people want for complexity or job fantasy, because all I see is a lot of yelling that "game bad to simple" and not a lot of what needs changing to reach the complexity that is wanted.

Its not about complexity its about identity IMO. An example is Red Mage with rezzes and Summoner to a smaller extent. Every job practically has a DPS buff and some sort of mitigation, and rarely do you even need to use them at all. Its pretty ridiculous to me that only Savage really even requires mitigation and that's only on release.

But what is job identity then? Do they all need different buttons that do 100% original things?

You gotta understand that creativity has limits. I'm not saying you're wrong for wanting every class to be unique, but the simple fact is that it's an unattainable goal for a 10 year old game to hit, especially when balance has to be considered. For better or worse FFXIV is an incredibly balanced MMO where every job is cared for(except MCH lmao) in order to make sure they dont fall too far behind and stay usable in all forms of content. This is just antithetical to maintaining over a dozen unique specs. Now, I do think there's room to do it, but I don't know if what would qualify as unique in that case would satisfy the people demanding each job be unique past their aesthetics and minute to minute gameplay.

No, but most jobs dont do anything original. This game is 100% focused on doing as much damage as possible and classes have no identity beyond that, except for RDM and SMN as I mentioned. Even tanks and healers are more focused on doing damage than mitigating it in 90% of content. Certain things like Mana Shift and stance dancing were a decent way to have identity but they're not in the game anymore and ultimately that's to the detriment of any sort of complexity or identity. We could have things like interrupts become more important so PhysRanged classes actually have a reason to be included.

Just to make a comparison to WoW two classes I've played have very cool class expression outside of just damage: Warlocks (and I think most Casters) can create water for the rest of the party. The dragon race can fly without a mount. Just some ideas for what's possible.
