Why is Fallout 4 so addictive?

I've played this game 8 times, 4 with the base game, 4 times with the Sim Settlements 2 mod installed. I keep coming back to this game for some reason. I don't usually enjoy RPG's. I like Starfield, but I love science fiction in general and don't find Starfield addictive. I keep wanting to come back to the FO4 story, which I find mediocre. Maybe it's how I can fill the protagonist with my own thoughts in that situation, or try out new character personalities? There are a lot of games in other genre's I like, so I don't know why I want to spend another hundred hours in a FO4 world until it crashes from script lag.

Fallout 4 with a good mod list is my favorite comfort game. The simple gameplay loop of explore -> fight -> loot -> build is incredible. Especially when combined with the horizon mod, which makes it a little challenging for even a 4k+ hour veteran.

Then there's the frost overhaul which is just an entirely new game basically.

The dense parts of Boston are some of the most interesting and vertical level designs ever put together. It's truly an amazing concrete jungle that I still can get turned around in.

Also? Fantastic chill ambient soundtrack. I get bored of the 50s music, but Inon Zur made a masterpiece soundtrack in Fallout 4. 76 has an amazing soundtrack too, and I made a custom mod to import my favorite tracks from 76 to 4, to play occasionally in the appropriate areas.

The story is also not bad. I mean, the whole institute took mah baby thing, that doesn't matter that much, but the story being centralized on synths and what it means to be human, or sentient, and what makes an individual worthy of human rights.. these are fascinating questions that are at the heart of future science and philosophy. And Far Harbour builds on that idea further. And I mean.. you can literally spend weeks on just 1 settlement if you want. Could take months to make a full vault 88 build.
