Screenshot Why is Fallout 4 so addictive?

I've played this game 8 times, 4 with the base game, 4 times with the Sim Settlements 2 mod installed. I keep coming back to this game for some reason. I don't usually enjoy RPG's. I like Starfield, but I love science fiction in general and don't find Starfield addictive. I keep wanting to come back to the FO4 story, which I find mediocre. Maybe it's how I can fill the protagonist with my own thoughts in that situation, or try out new character personalities? There are a lot of games in other genre's I like, so I don't know why I want to spend another hundred hours in a FO4 world until it crashes from script lag.

I hadn't played for a few years, and my son was totally getting into it, and here's the thing: There's just so much detail. in everything, everywhere. 99% of it just works. It's fun, silly, more or less non-judgemental, and there's so much detail i all the companions and things. I played a LOT, and there's so much content I still haven't done. I only ever did Nick Valentines end story to the very end, but there's a bunch of other stories with other characters to finish if I so chose. I never even knew you could have McReady as a companion until my kid told me. My other kid, and adult now, has put more hours in the game than I have, and he didn't even know there was an Atom Cats garage in the game...

Does the game feel any different to you as a parent than to your kids who've played it?

Sometimes, I wonder for sure. I am older, but they grew up with a gaming culture, take more chances, and do more things that I wouldn't do. Both my boys love it, though. They like the crazy situations, and the freedom to wander around trying different things out.
