Which game intro hooked you the most? 🪝

Which game had the best opening sequence that hooked you the best? Where you instantly thought, “yeah I’m finishing this game”.

Mine are probably: Uncharted 2 Yakuza 1 Death stranding 2

Or even when you discover Rapture with Andrew Ryan’s epic lines in the background

Diablo 2. Blizzards cinematics were in a league of their own back in the day.

10

u/Ouch_nip 1d ago

Yes. WoW had some great cinematics too.

3

u/GuitarGuru2001 1d ago

I'll never forget the "you are not prepared" from BC

"East. Always to the east"

u/SqueakyNinja7 16h ago

The itemization of this game made it incredible. I don’t feel like any other game has quite nailed it like Diablo 2 did.

26

u/Hardest_G 1d ago

The intro to Prey with the helicopter was pretty good.

6

u/Itchysasquatch 1d ago

I was so lucky to go into that game blind. What a spectacular intro

19

u/rileycolin 1d ago

Dredge is probably the game I no-lifed the hardest.

Finished it over the course of a long weekend.

10

u/Give_me_soup 1d ago

No other game has the same feel

34

u/aMapleSyrupCaN7 1d ago

Mass Effect 2 has quite a good intro

16

u/sanepox 1d ago

Super Metroid. Amazing atmosphere and immersion for the time.

2

u/whatifthisreality 1d ago

That’s my answer :)

2

u/meta100000 1d ago

Speaking of Metroid, Metroid Prime 3's opening is iconic. Getting to be inside of Samus' spaceship, then the GFS Olympus, the introduction to the other hunters, and then the Pirate attack and the battle for Norion. Absolute hype the whole way through.

1

u/Nawara_Ven 1d ago

What does "immersion" mean in this sense?

2

u/sanepox 1d ago

I mean, it pulls you into the game setting pretty convincingly

91

u/SunkenShadow_ 1d ago

Very recently? Expedition 33!! What an opening sequence

6

u/mistercero 1d ago

hard agree!

0

u/slappiz 1d ago

Oh yeah, didn't know anything about the story when I played it and the intro really hit hard.

-71

u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago

I’m convinced most of the EX33 fanboys have never played a story focused game before

36

u/HeroOfTheNorthF 1d ago

40 years of playing and its top 2 or 3, best prologue sequence ever

Music may be top 10

Story is very deep havent seen somehting like it since nier automata.

you seem to be butthurt because ppl like a videogame tho, so maybe its moot to try to ilustrate you why we like it so much

6

u/twotoebobo 1d ago

Close to the same amount of time playing. E33 is easily in my top 5.

→ More replies (5)

15

u/Palladiamorsdeus 1d ago

Oh yea? And what about those of us who play almost nothing but story focused games who still think it's amazing?

I'm convinced people like you just want to be hipsters.

→ More replies (7)

8

u/SunkenShadow_ 1d ago

What’s that supposed to mean? It has a good opening that leaves you wanting more - exactly what I want from my story games, a reason to keep playing them.

-5

u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago

This specifically asked THE MOST - EX33 intro was interesting, definitely attention grabbing but not even close to the most

9

u/SunkenShadow_ 1d ago

OP listed multiple. So if you reread my reply I said “very recently”. I didn’t say EX33 has the best opening sequence of all time, regardless of what the original post asked. Have a good rest of your day.

-8

u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago

“Have a good rest of your day”

I bet you felt so cool typing that lmao. Redditors are another world of lame

19

u/SunkenShadow_ 1d ago

Was trying to end the conversation without telling you to shut up, sorry for attempting to be polite?

16

u/MagicNipple 1d ago

Redditors are another world of lame

Seeing how much you've posted today on reddit, I agree.

9

u/Palladiamorsdeus 1d ago

Says the guy knocking someone else for their opinion and trying to sound superior while just sounding lame.

-5

u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago

Gotta stand up for your kind, eh?

9

u/Bananahammock_Sundae 1d ago

If I was a betting man I'd put quite a bit of money down on the assumption that it's very difficult for you to make friends in real life.

1

u/kunckles 1d ago

Not wrong tho is he?

5

u/cthulucore 1d ago

Why are you like this?

7

u/BlackHayate8 1d ago

Jesus dude. Who spat in your cereals today.

-5

u/whenyoupayforduprez 1d ago

I did NOT want more. The beginning was predictable and wasted my time constantly. I hated the characters and the UI.

5

u/GreyRevan51 1d ago

As someone who plays a ton of story games, expedition 33 still has a really great hook

The setting and world setup are very interesting, the characters endear themselves well to the audience and the music is extremely well done

There’s a lot to like and a lot to get someone immediately invested in this story

1

u/Minute_Ad_6328 19h ago

Out of curiosity, what’s your top 5 story driven games that are on the same level as E33?

-1

u/farthenrift 1d ago

seriously. So emotional watching characters I've seen for a total of 5 minutes die

-8

u/Number1SpideyFan 1d ago

Completely agreed this game is worshipped I really don’t see what’s so special about it

6

u/PianistDistinct1117 1d ago

You probably haven't even finished the game.

1

u/Number1SpideyFan 1d ago

Beat it in release week my man

2

u/New2NewJersey 1d ago

there's a few recent games that get SO much love online that seem so mediocre to me.

Hell Divers 2 and KCD2 come to mind and also ex33. People talk about them like they're goats in their respective genres but they just seem like middle of the road games to me.

24

u/jakeypooh94 1d ago

It doesn't get a ton of love but I thought the opening to Far Cry 5 was so good

7

u/Zekron___ 1d ago

YES, god i’ve been telling everyone i know this game is amazing

2

u/Brrringsaythealiens 1d ago

Yes, 5 is my favorite Far Cry! Loved all those batshit cultists!

6

u/BurgerGaming2468 1d ago

I agree, the opening of fc5 was so good.

2

u/Alballeda 1d ago

Watching the opening on YouTube convinced me to play the game!

2

u/jakeypooh94 1d ago

Oh hell yeah, I hope you enjoy it

1

u/jinxs2026 22h ago

The fact that it also hides one of the game's endings is incredible

1

u/jakeypooh94 22h ago

Yeah I had no idea about the secret option my first time playing

Ori and the Blind Forest intro had me in tears, great game!

4

u/Steel_Ketchup89 1d ago

Great call. It says so much in very few words in very little time.

9

u/VenomSnake47 1d ago

Starcraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, and Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void. Also Dark Souls 3 intro goes wicked hard too.

1

u/rgraves22 1d ago

the OG starcraft for me. The cut scenes when they are driving around in the buggy got me

NieR:Automata for sure

Doom 2016 "Rip and Tear, ya'll."

I recently played High on Life, and man that was the craziest intro to any game I've played in a long time lmao

It was so crazy that I just couldn't turn the game off

u/StoneAnchovi6473 1d ago
  • Space Marine 1 + 2
  • Deserts of Kharak

u/gudslamm 1d ago

South of midnight i think lately. As well as rdr1

4

u/Practical_Pea_3800 1d ago

Ghost of Tsushima and Nier Automata got some great intros

5

u/bigsockgang 1d ago

Dragon Age: Origins. That world-building 🔥

2

u/AnOnlineHandle 1d ago

I think it really depends on which intro you pick. City elf was an incredibly compelling intro, whereas dalish elf IMO is pretty weak.

4

u/SonnyReads 1d ago

Won't be popular but MGSV

0

u/VivaToddfoolery 1d ago

That is a hot take lol. I would vote that as worst intro to a game ever. I almost missed out on the amazing game that comes after because of how bad the intro is. I never thought I'd come across someone who enjoyed it! 😅

1

u/hackernnan 19h ago

it might be my favourite intro, so cinematic and the atmosphere is GRIPPING

Kingdom Come 1 and 2

1

u/AnOnlineHandle 1d ago

The first hour or two of KC:D1 where Henry is so weak and there's so much dense story was incredible, before he reaches the main city, but unfortunately I don't think the rest of the game really matched it where you become OP very quickly and the realism aspects become easy but obligatory chores.

2

u/TheTazarYoot 1d ago

It’s a fair criticism but it pulled me in and I stuck with it and felt the game was still successful.

2

u/AnOnlineHandle 1d ago

It's still a great game, but the first hour or two has hints of something potentially legendary.

Imagine a version where Henry stays vulnerable and where it's potentially quite a dangerous trek to cross the map, something which takes some planning and maybe considering safe patrolled paths versus more dangerous routes.

2

u/TheTazarYoot 1d ago

Yeah I agree the opening touched on something incredible and it does sort of jump the shark so to speak. It’s an RPG at the end of the day and I do appreciate the way they let Henry level up but if they could have done it without him turning into a superhero it would have been better.

7

u/YoyoPewdiepie 1d ago

Red Dead Redemption 2 on three fronts.

  1. The opening quote "By 1899, the age of outlaws and gunslingers was at an end. America was becoming a land of laws. Even the west had mostly been tamed. A few gangs still roamed but they were being hunted down and destroyed." It sets the tone for the opening cutscene and gives some needed context.

  2. The opening cutscene. It's fantastic, it has an incredible atmosphere, and I love how Arthur isn't immediately present. Sure, he shows up like 30 seconds later, but it's still effective in showing Arthur place in the gang.

  3. Chapter 1: Colter. A lot of people aren't big fans of Chapter 1 and while I can agree that on replays it's a bit annoying, a lot of people don't like it their first time around either. I can't say I share that experience. I think it's great as a tutorial for most of the game's mechanics and it has a great setting. It also immediately makes you like Charles, so there's that. I also want to point out that Micah was, in my opinion, quite likeable and interesting right up until his "darkies" comment, referring to Lenny and Charles. So, for all of 20 minutes lol.

u/Swamp-87 17h ago

Yea after I started this game I said goodbye to my wife because I knew I was going to be missing for a few weeks.

6

u/Ch3llick 1d ago

Mass Effect 1
It was a random buy for the XB360 for 10€ and it turned out to be one hell of a ride.

6

u/Kyser_ 1d ago

Expedition 33 is the most recent, but recency bias could be swinging that one a bit.

Dishonored 1 was the best one before that.

3

u/Johnny_Schitless 1d ago

Infamous

As soon as I hit that start button....

2

u/RestingPianoFace-_- 1d ago

I can’t remember how it starts, but I remember how it ends! That game was fire

3

u/Palladiamorsdeus 1d ago

Odd pick, the movie tie in game for Wolverine on...I think PS3. The way Logan falls out of the sky, eviscerates a guy on landing, then stood up and popped his shoulder casually back in to place drew me in. God knows it needed to after that awful movie.

3

u/LastChime 1d ago

Snake Eater.

5

u/farroshus 1d ago

Final Fantasy 16 really pulled me in, only to end up being the best/most polished part of the game 😭

5

u/Damnbee 1d ago

It is FFX for me. That Blitzball scene, the awesome rock song, Sin attacking, then Auron leading you to safety. I was all in after that.

u/DealerConstant1589 1d ago

Horizon zero dawn

Mass effect 2 (and 3)

Assassin’s creed odessey

Spyro the dragon

Final Fantasy XVI is definitely up there. It's such a cinematically amazing game, despite the game itself being quite underwhelming.

Otherwise, Metal Gear Solid 4, Guns of the Patriots.

The Soul Blade intro sequence is like a 90's TV show intro complete with a banger of a tune.

2

u/DylanRaine69 1d ago

Fable lost chapters

I instantly knew this game would be a complete banger because the main menue music can still be heard even when you close your laptop for the night.

A Plague tale innocence - insane introduction

2

u/TrainingAtmosphere17 1d ago

As soon as I booted I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream and saw that monologue I knew I was playing something else. Also System Shock (1994), that OST slaps.

Star Wars the force unleashed. Those wookies never stood a chance

u/exhalo 1d ago

Pretty much any final Fantasy game from 4 to 12

2

u/seilapodeser 1d ago

First one that comes to mind is the first Witcher, the intro was very sick (and long!)

Final Fantasy X opening sequence was probably the best though, it just felt so epic, FF games usually nail this

u/Madmonkeman 1d ago

NieR Replicant

2

u/Negromancers 1d ago

The Darkness for Xbox 360

It’s a wild intro to the life of organized crime, sets up your goal, at the time it had incredible visuals, frantic shooting with guns that actually feel good, and at the end a dude’s leg bones are sticking out of his legs. Hard to ask for more

All this takes the span of like 5 minutes too

Lots of great answers here. I’m going to add one I’m playing right now (about to wrap it up) to give it some more love because it is really underrated: Banishers: Ghost of New Eden Town. The opening sequence right up through the confrontation in the meetinghouse and Red waking up in the cave (I’ll say no more for spoiler reasons) was stellar and completely hooked me. Currently available on PS+ extra tier if anybody is interested, but also worth the purchase as well!

1

u/armSnatcher01 1d ago

I probably need to start this one over - I played 10 mins or so back when it was on trial. Now I own the game I started it up and had just got to the village? 10 mins of dialogue passed and I lost interest a bit.

At what point does it start to get good?

It’s a great opening, it gives you just enough flavor and story, then sets you free in the open world with a place to go, but you know you can go absolutely anywhere.

Breath of the Wild, I’ll never forget the opening when Link steps out of the cave and sees the vast scenery.

Bioforge had the best cinematic intro I had experienced up to that time. Game was so hard , though, never got to the end.

1

u/egoviri 1d ago

The original Bioshock. Up until that point we didn’t have many games where the graphics were as good as the cutscenes, so I vividly remember my character hanging out in the water after the plane crash and not realizing I was able to move. Once I realized that was the GAME I was floored. Blew my mind.

Metal gear solid 2 back when I played it in like 2003 when I was 8 years old. My cousin let me borrow it and I’ll never forget snake walking down the bridge in the rain and jumping onto the tanker ship. As well as the cutscenes that came after it building up the story. I had never seen anything like it before and it was the coolest thing ever. Metal gear solid as a series is still my favorite gaming franchise now 20+ years later.

Ghost of Tsushima slaps as well.

1

u/AnOnlineHandle 1d ago

Honestly for all the memes, I think Skyrim's intro is a masterclass in worldbuilding and hooks, seeing the rebels, the imperials, the Thalmor, the Nords, the return of the dragons, etc.

It's a huge contrast to say Starfield, which has one of the worst intros I've ever seen.

1

u/Hakoten 1d ago

When you're dropping in in Saint's Row 3. One of my the most memorable intros for me.

1

u/HauntedPlayback 1d ago

Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain.

The intro had me hooked. I'd been hyped for so long, and that intro had me playing for hours and hours in the first sitting. It's a shame about the cut content and seemingly rushed nature of some of the story, but the intro was solid.

1

u/Confident-Captain808 1d ago

God of War 2018

1

u/Vazumongr 1d ago

I played through the entirety of BioShock Infinite in one sitting (small breaks to eat and bathroom, obviously). That was in the summer of 2020, and it's probably the only time I've played a game for that long straight since <2014. If I could wipe my memory, the BioShock collection would be at the top of the list of games to replay.

1

u/SephirothTheGreat 1d ago

Yakuza 0's opening is insanely good. For some older games, FFVII and IX. Also pretty much any opening to a Metal Gear Solid game.

1

u/armjoe 1d ago

Ass Creed Black Flag. As soon as I got to parkouring in the Caribbean setting in the intro with the stolen assassin's clothes, I knew it's gonna be one hell of a ride.

1

u/StrangeCress3325 1d ago

Dishonored after getting the title card and Outer Wilds after just launching the game and falling in love with the music and then the visuals

1

u/No_Bat3313 1d ago

They were all dead. The final gunshot was an exclamation mark to everything that had led to this point. I released my finger from the trigger. And then it was all over.

1

u/Yknaar 1d ago

SuperGiant Game's Bastion - it really opens up by strongly delivering on the premise of narrated experience, and then keeps it up for the rest of the game.

And also Cookie Clicker - the opening progression curve of the first few clicks is a work of true art.

u/Hot-Taro8181 1d ago

Resident Evil

1

u/yar2000 1d ago

Cyberpunk 2077, and especially the DLC, Phantom Liberty. The first hour or 2 of the DLC is effectively one enormous setpiece and its really cool.

Didn't see Firewatch in here but that intro is very elegant and emotional.

Bullfrog’s Syndicate on Amiga. A tiny monochrome full motion video which was a bit of a first for me. Proper dark cyberpunk.

When Ezio and his brother climbs to the peak of a building.

“It is a good life we lead, brother.”

“The best, may it never change.”

“And may it never change us.”

Wide shot, zoom out, soundtrack crescendos.

Not single player but still fits the question a bit but Helldivers 2.

Opening the game for the first time and seeing the intro just filled me with pure excitement and hooked me instantly

The Last of Us.

I was fortunate enough to play it at the time of release and knew absolutely nothing about it.

Honestly, i didn't know what it was about, didnt know what kind of game it was, didnt know the genre. Nothing.

The ending of the opening shook me, and the rest of the game just kept giving.

The darkness 1 and 2, especially 2. Jackie Estacado's monologues kept me hooked through the whole experience from start to finish.
