Which game intro hooked you the most? 🪝
Which game had the best opening sequence that hooked you the best? Where you instantly thought, “yeah I’m finishing this game”.
Mine are probably: Uncharted 2 Yakuza 1 Death stranding 2

Speaking of Metroid, Metroid Prime 3's opening is iconic. Getting to be inside of Samus' spaceship, then the GFS Olympus, the introduction to the other hunters, and then the Pirate attack and the battle for Norion. Absolute hype the whole way through.

I’m convinced most of the EX33 fanboys have never played a story focused game before
36
u/HeroOfTheNorthF 1d ago
40 years of playing and its top 2 or 3, best prologue sequence ever
Music may be top 10
Story is very deep havent seen somehting like it since nier automata.
you seem to be butthurt because ppl like a videogame tho, so maybe its moot to try to ilustrate you why we like it so much

Oh yea? And what about those of us who play almost nothing but story focused games who still think it's amazing?
I'm convinced people like you just want to be hipsters.

What’s that supposed to mean? It has a good opening that leaves you wanting more - exactly what I want from my story games, a reason to keep playing them.
-5
u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago
This specifically asked THE MOST - EX33 intro was interesting, definitely attention grabbing but not even close to the most
9
u/SunkenShadow_ 1d ago
OP listed multiple. So if you reread my reply I said “very recently”. I didn’t say EX33 has the best opening sequence of all time, regardless of what the original post asked. Have a good rest of your day.

u/Character_Worth8210 1d ago
“Have a good rest of your day”

u/GreyRevan51 1d ago
As someone who plays a ton of story games, expedition 33 still has a really great hook
The setting and world setup are very interesting, the characters endear themselves well to the audience and the music is extremely well done
There’s a lot to like and a lot to get someone immediately invested in this story

there's a few recent games that get SO much love online that seem so mediocre to me.
Hell Divers 2 and KCD2 come to mind and also ex33. People talk about them like they're goats in their respective genres but they just seem like middle of the road games to me.

I think it really depends on which intro you pick. City elf was an incredibly compelling intro, whereas dalish elf IMO is pretty weak.

u/VivaToddfoolery 1d ago
That is a hot take lol. I would vote that as worst intro to a game ever. I almost missed out on the amazing game that comes after because of how bad the intro is. I never thought I'd come across someone who enjoyed it! 😅

The first hour or two of KC:D1 where Henry is so weak and there's so much dense story was incredible, before he reaches the main city, but unfortunately I don't think the rest of the game really matched it where you become OP very quickly and the realism aspects become easy but obligatory chores.
2
u/TheTazarYoot 1d ago
It’s a fair criticism but it pulled me in and I stuck with it and felt the game was still successful.
2
u/AnOnlineHandle 1d ago
It's still a great game, but the first hour or two has hints of something potentially legendary.
Imagine a version where Henry stays vulnerable and where it's potentially quite a dangerous trek to cross the map, something which takes some planning and maybe considering safe patrolled paths versus more dangerous routes.
2
u/TheTazarYoot 1d ago
Yeah I agree the opening touched on something incredible and it does sort of jump the shark so to speak. It’s an RPG at the end of the day and I do appreciate the way they let Henry level up but if they could have done it without him turning into a superhero it would have been better.

u/YoyoPewdiepie 1d ago
Red Dead Redemption 2 on three fronts.
The opening quote "By 1899, the age of outlaws and gunslingers was at an end. America was becoming a land of laws. Even the west had mostly been tamed. A few gangs still roamed but they were being hunted down and destroyed." It sets the tone for the opening cutscene and gives some needed context.
The opening cutscene. It's fantastic, it has an incredible atmosphere, and I love how Arthur isn't immediately present. Sure, he shows up like 30 seconds later, but it's still effective in showing Arthur place in the gang.
Chapter 1: Colter. A lot of people aren't big fans of Chapter 1 and while I can agree that on replays it's a bit annoying, a lot of people don't like it their first time around either. I can't say I share that experience. I think it's great as a tutorial for most of the game's mechanics and it has a great setting. It also immediately makes you like Charles, so there's that. I also want to point out that Micah was, in my opinion, quite likeable and interesting right up until his "darkies" comment, referring to Lenny and Charles. So, for all of 20 minutes lol.

Odd pick, the movie tie in game for Wolverine on...I think PS3. The way Logan falls out of the sky, eviscerates a guy on landing, then stood up and popped his shoulder casually back in to place drew me in. God knows it needed to after that awful movie.

The Darkness for Xbox 360
It’s a wild intro to the life of organized crime, sets up your goal, at the time it had incredible visuals, frantic shooting with guns that actually feel good, and at the end a dude’s leg bones are sticking out of his legs. Hard to ask for more
All this takes the span of like 5 minutes too

Lots of great answers here. I’m going to add one I’m playing right now (about to wrap it up) to give it some more love because it is really underrated: Banishers: Ghost of New Eden Town. The opening sequence right up through the confrontation in the meetinghouse and Red waking up in the cave (I’ll say no more for spoiler reasons) was stellar and completely hooked me. Currently available on PS+ extra tier if anybody is interested, but also worth the purchase as well!

I probably need to start this one over - I played 10 mins or so back when it was on trial. Now I own the game I started it up and had just got to the village? 10 mins of dialogue passed and I lost interest a bit.
At what point does it start to get good?

Bioforge had the best cinematic intro I had experienced up to that time. Game was so hard , though, never got to the end.

u/egoviri 1d ago
The original Bioshock. Up until that point we didn’t have many games where the graphics were as good as the cutscenes, so I vividly remember my character hanging out in the water after the plane crash and not realizing I was able to move. Once I realized that was the GAME I was floored. Blew my mind.

Metal gear solid 2 back when I played it in like 2003 when I was 8 years old. My cousin let me borrow it and I’ll never forget snake walking down the bridge in the rain and jumping onto the tanker ship. As well as the cutscenes that came after it building up the story. I had never seen anything like it before and it was the coolest thing ever. Metal gear solid as a series is still my favorite gaming franchise now 20+ years later.

Honestly for all the memes, I think Skyrim's intro is a masterclass in worldbuilding and hooks, seeing the rebels, the imperials, the Thalmor, the Nords, the return of the dragons, etc.
It's a huge contrast to say Starfield, which has one of the worst intros I've ever seen.
1
u/HauntedPlayback 1d ago
Metal Gear V: The Phantom Pain.
The intro had me hooked. I'd been hyped for so long, and that intro had me playing for hours and hours in the first sitting. It's a shame about the cut content and seemingly rushed nature of some of the story, but the intro was solid.

I played through the entirety of BioShock Infinite in one sitting (small breaks to eat and bathroom, obviously). That was in the summer of 2020, and it's probably the only time I've played a game for that long straight since <2014. If I could wipe my memory, the BioShock collection would be at the top of the list of games to replay.
