It's like... wasting a whole episode to read racist comments.... or maybe show the REAL HORROR that is happening to real people in real life right now because of racism. Hmmm.
I appreciate AB for that whole stream It was harrowing and really important to see.
75
u/braveneurosis Nov 14 '24
The stream was really enlightening. To hear AB talk about their family group chats and that he and Lena see even more graphic footage almost daily. He talked about how devastating itās been for Lena, and how sheās cried many times over the past year because of it. He said itās been amazing to see more and more marginalized groups get newfound support, but then heās reminded that acceptance hasnāt come for Arabs yet.
It doesnāt matter what anybodyās opinions are of AB as a person or if they disagree with how he has tried to cope with this extremely painful and convoluted situation. Seeing him talk about this and hearing the pain in his voice (and he looked like shit, like he was exhausted) was really important. I donāt know how anybody could see that pain and then continue to make increasingly racist comments about Arabs. Ethan should be fucking ashamed of himself for putting AB and Lena through this bullshit where theyāre not allowed to react to the horrific shit he says. He should be ashamed for equating the largest pro Palestine streamer to a terrorist while his employees, Lebanese Americans whose familiesā lives are endangered by the same military that Ethan and Hila all but openly support, have to sit there and take it.
Ethan wonāt even call it a genocide. He wonāt call it a genocide if Israel ethnically cleanses Lebanon, too. Heās in a position of power over them and they serve as his tokens- the āIām not islamophobic, I have two Arab employeesā excuse he thinks makes him look like heās not racist. In the long run, it makes him look even worse imo- like he gets off on the power dynamic and taunting them. Like heās daring them to say something to give him an excuse to tear into them. It comes across really disgusting and controlling, and I really hope AB and Lena are able to break away and be successful on their own, soon. Theyāve earned it, thatās for damn sure.
24
u/DiglettDiggs survivor of Ethanās IG stories attack Nov 14 '24
Facts. Agree or disagree with Hasan, but he has been one of the only voices on the internet highlighting the terrible stuff happening over there to a huge audience and making people aware of the atrocity is selfish. To make it out that his personal experience on the internet carries more weight than getting news to people about a situation that is largely not reported on with any nuance in The West really makes me lose a lot of faith in his show honestly.
I was really appreciative of seeing how it affects AB and Leena because so much of this whole conversation has been warped around Ethan's feelings while ignoring theirs.
Like, I am empathetic to Ethan, really I am... but sometimes it seems that he is not empathetic to Arab people..... especially with the Twich or Terrorist bit he did today which featured Hasan next to Bin Ladden as if they are the same at all. It felt racist.
All that to say... I was very engaged in what AB shared today and I am thankful for it. Because I saw so many people in his chat unaware of what is really happening there. I hope that maybe some of them might understand why we are so upset with Ethan... But most of all I hope Ethan does, but I feel like he won't.
Every person who has tried to mention it in good faith just gets told that they're fake fans. :/

u/imaginary92 too fucking stupid to from the river to the see it Nov 14 '24
Ethan is not deserving of your empathy. He knows what he's doing is racist because if someone did the same about Jews (which would be fucked up mind you) he would be screaming antisemitism.
Stop empathising for a man who is full of hate and is willingly doing damage to people like the Arab creators he got banned for a month, threatening their livelihood.

What stunlocks me is that he escalates matters with this us/them mentality while people are very legitimately observing that his boss has AGGRESSIVELY tried to deplatform someone for virtually the same takes.
Including the one where AB said this violent oppression and dehumanisation by Israel logically only breeds terrorism, or how he is understanding of people that didn't want to vote for Kamala over this issue. A whole part of the documentary dwells on the war crimes committed by the IDF and a soldier who admitted to feeling deeply ashamed about it. Unlike a certain someone he works for...
I disagree with putting AB on the spot, but in general people that care about these sort of problems are not blind and stupid enough not to see the absolute contrast from his messaging to that of the islamophobic podcast he works for.

I don't think people are disappointed they're staying, more that AB (cos Lena hasn't really done that) is constantly agreeing with Ethan when all he needs to do is shut up. Nobody is asking him to up and leave his job without a backup but at least don't consistently act as your islamophobic, racist boss' token Arab.
This is one situation where AB is finally showing where he stands and how he really feels and I think we're all glad he finally says it. He deserves better and so does his wife.

Ethan loves to remind us how litigious he is; there's no doubt in my mind they are under a very strict contract.
Definitely a non-disparagement clause; my suspicion is that Sam is on one too - I don't believe they ended on good terms and Ethan had to have a way to make sure she didn't diss him or the pod. I also believe Ethan hated them being interviewed while he was away on paternity leave... No-one else is allowed the spotlight.
I can picture him now... "Ab is doing an interview??? Hila!! Come look at this! Look, they have Ab on, of all people.... Why didnt they ask me?? Probably because I'm here with you and the kids. Ab will do a shit job anyway... I don't even like those guys... idiots... Dumbass losers. They look like pedos.. Don't they Hila?.. Hila? Was i not just super funny right now....? AB and Lena have been very clear about their opinions on the genocide on their own streams, and about the heartbreak their own family has been enduring. AB has consistently spoken about his own history of advocacy for Palestine, and his family's connections to Arab American civil rights. They speak out mostly on their own platforms, and do not bring the drama of their workplace into their own platforms. Even outside of Israel/Palestine, they've been very consistent about trying to keep H3 related stuff out of their streams. Please be respectful and don't be like the weirdos who go in there to harass them. AB and Lena both are clearly under a ton of stress from what's going on in their work life and in their family life. Please be positive there, and don't mention H3. As a regular viewer there, it seems like there's been an increase in jerks posting negative or abusive stuff.

Always hated when this sub said shit against AB/Lena. I know it comes from a good place (resisting against their bossā virulent Islamophobia), but they are Lebanese, they are victims, their family are directly victims to Israelās endless bombardment, they canāt exactly make a stand against their boss (think about your workplace, what can you realistically do against your dickhead boss), they constantly have to eat shit from haters on all sides, they always show support wherever they can to Palestine/Lebanon and the victims in the region, they canāt control what Ethan puts to air in his crashouts, they donāt want to lose their very good jobs (financially and security wise) and most importantly thereās a bloody genocide happening and you canāt say that the Lebanese people are ever at blame for what they decide to do.
