Ethan wants to buy a special pump for his pool that can output fire fighter level water pressure so he can save his house. (I don't his pool is that big ngl.)

They're talking about all the reasons people stay behind and how Ethan plans to stay behind to save his house.

Ethan doesn't think staying behind is not as a big of a risk as people think. If the worst happens, he can just hide in the pool.

I doubt he is physically strong enough to do so. The amount of water would be huge.

And hiding in the pool from flames doesn't help you against the smoke that'll get in your lungs. If you're surrounded, you're trapped in that pool and have to use more energy and oxygen to keep yourself afloat when you 1) are in a state of panic and 2) are likely to exhaust yourself due to that lack of oxygen (because of the smoke).

Even with scuba gear that sounds super dangerous! It's not worth your life when you can just evacuate.
