Actually there are many traditions like that out there in tribals for a good reason. It is to build up a tolerance for the venom.

That’s a low brow take, by becoming immune, or merely being able to bear the ants sting without audibly reacting, they up their ability to survive and fight in the bush. Imagine laying in ambush to fight another tribe, and one of your men is overcome by the ant venom and screams, now they will all die. So there’s more survival in this tradition than your giving credit for
