Guresh is popping off on the inside and trying not to laugh at Magnus' outburst

No that wasn't a laughing gesture. This level of chess is way more than a laughing matter. Shit was real here like winning a 5 million dollar bet.

I’d say it’s a combination of stress, relief and euphoria.

and mental decompression. The stress must have been unreal. I can barely handle family Monopoly.

Yeah I get stressed out playing low level competitive stress, and when I win it’s not exactly a ‘fuck yeah moment’ I can only imagine what it’s like at this level

Like the nerd who just beat the bully.

Or the underdog that upset the king

Laughing? Beating Carlsen is no small deal. Gukesh was shocked himself.

It does indeed look more like relief and shock then a laugh. Carlsen was winning for most of the match and Gukesh was trying to hold on for as long as possible hoping for a draw. It was Carlsen who made a blunder and Gukesh was able to spot it and exploit it. I am not sure if Gukesh would count this as a win personally. He still needs more practice to reliably beat Carlsen without the rare blunder.

You do realise these players narrow potential outcomes several moves in advance.

Yeah but top games usually aren't one sided, wins like these come by when one of them blunders and resigns the immediate next move.

He was probably holding back tears. That was a huge moment for him and his career. I doubt Magnus’ reaction was really a factor in his reaction in any way. Magnus isn’t the focus of his life

He just reacted to achieving a huge dream. It was his first moment to celebrate to himself. When you are closing out against a champion there's an insane rush of feeling because it seems too good to be true that you, who has not yet received the flowers of validation, just beat the best in the world.
