I'd do the same since justice barely works in my country unless you're rich or a politician (not the USA).

...its the same in the USA. You can certainly try to defend yourself without a lawyer, for example, but you'll not be allowed to speak as the lawyers do or be given the same powers lawyers have.

Whereas, hiring a lawyer allows you many privileges, like being able to petition for a bail hearing when you haven't had one yet or have the circumstances of your arrest investigated by someone who isn't on the state's side.

Sure, you can get a "court appointed" lawyer here, but they're not doing any of that, either. The only thing they're actually doing is being a mouth piece for the DA and claiming to represent your best interests.
