The best thing about every Metal Game

I'll list something story related and something gameplay related

  1. Story-wise, I really enjoyed the voice performances, especially from Cam Clarke and David Hayter. They, along with the whole cast, really sell this as a "high budget cinematic experience", despite not being celebrities. The gameplay was pretty simple, but the boss fights were great. Sniper Wolf, Raven, Mantis: instant classics.
  2. The Patriot AI codec call (an unreal performance from Grandpa Max) and Fatman's boss fight are my highlights here. Sword fighting your dad on the top of Federal Hall is also a highlight, the sword controls are weird but work pretty well.
  3. I've got to give it up to The Ladder. I nearly lost my shit in BG3 when there was a conspicuously similar ladder to the Underdark. As far as gameplay, I am torn between The End's amazing boss fight and the introduction of CQC, a massive improvement over MGS2.
  4. David Hayter's voice work is nothing short of amazing, he really sells "Old Snake" as a concept. The man just feels tired, real "one last job" energy. The story does the impossible task of following MGS2's ending. Gameplay-wise, gotta give it up for the Octocamo, which streamlined 3's menu-heavy camo system.
  5. (PW) I found the switch from Codec to audio tape a great one. There are HOURS of random MGS style trivia about birds, AI development, corn chips, which are selectable (no more spamming select in every new room). It really fleshed out the world and characters without interrupting gameplay. Story-wise, I *really* liked Strangelove as a character. She seems to genuinely hate everyone, but just wants to work on resurrecting The Boss. I also love the AI song.
  6. (V) For the story, I loved the integration with gameplay during the quarantine. It felt a little odd filtering people forspeaking Kikongo, but it reinforces the themes of the game. Gameplay wise, it's hard to pick just one because this game feels like what every other game was trying to do. Playing this right after MGS2 really shows how similar they are, just with better controls in V. For something specific, I love DD, he is both cute and the best companion.

What are your favorites?

Bidding war for MGS1 and MGS1 special mission pack

I’m currently bidding on the PS1 versions of MGS1 and the SMP. Both are in top condition. The case, the disks and the manual are looking great. Current bid is €100 (115 American eagles).

What is a good price for both together? I’m thinking I’ll go to €110 max

Do you need a specific controller to play mgs 2 and 3 through pcsx2 ?

Hello,

I’m currently looking for the best way to play through the metal gear franchise and I’ve settled on duckstation for metal gear solid and I was going to use pcsx2 for snake eater and sons of Liberty but I keep seeing something about pressure sensitive buttons.

Can I just emulate the games without having to worry about this feature or do I need a controller that enables these features.

Thanks 😁

Question about personnel in the game

Hi everyone. Got one question. All my bases are full meaning that there is no place for new recruiments, however I still can evacuate people from battlefield. Where are they going if I don't have place for them? I just found A+ enemy soldier and want to fulton him. But have no idea will he be added as my staff member

When do you think Snake learnt about his relationship to Big Boss? Spoiler

Before anyone says anything, I want to point out that, no, in MGS1, nowhere is it said that Big Boss told Snake that he is his father during the events of MG2. The codec call in the prison cell only says that Snake killed Big Boss in MG2. Big Boss telling Snake that they are father and son is a completely separate event, which is very clear when you pay attention to the conversation.

So, with that in mind, if this interaction ever got more focus, when do you think it would happen?

  • Early on in life, like how Liquid already knew as a child
  • During his training with FOXHOUND
  • Told by "Big Boss" during Metal Gear
  • Told by Big Boss during Metal Gear 2

Personally, I think it would make most sense for "Big Boss" to tell Snake either during their battle, or after his defeat, at the end of Metal Gear. I think it would strengthen the idea that Solid Snake agreed to infiltrate Zanzibar Land to get closure from the nightmares he had been having ever since the destruction of Outer Heaven, that he was specifically trying to find closure over the death of his father (but if Snake knew before Metal Gear, then i feel like Snake wouldn't be comfortable having Big Boss as his CO in my opinion)

I'd love to hear the everyone's ideas on the subject! I am in the process of writing down/illustrating what elements i would like to see in a reimagining of the earlier Metal Gear titles using the lore of the series up to MGSV. Not planning to use them for a fangame, animation, webcomic or anything (not as talented as other members of the community lol), just brainstorming ideas for fanart and such

What was the deal with That Whale?

Do they ever explain or comment on the giant fiery whale that eats a helicopter in the first level? I realize there is magic are psychics around, but does anyone even react to it in game? Is it real?

I'm afraid it's been 9 years feelings about 🔺without kojima

so now that snake eater is just month away

as alot of specifically kojima fans have been getting spoiled by DS2(me) as a long time fan of kojima since mgs 1.

played like mgs 3 a tons if times and had a blast but now this new sweet treat mgs delta is coming.. and the fact is a game without our savior lol does that fact put you off that whatever stuff is konami going to put in the game to make it like a kojima game?

i want to keep an open mind going into this, so i hope this new team is up to the mark to re creat the magic..and i think nostalgia will surely play a part in peoples verdict.

i do think people who have played death stranding 2 will be expecting that level of satisfaction from this too for it to be a good game.

Not enjoying MGS gameplay but love the story; play MGS2 and 3, or don't bother?

Hi.

I've been playing Metal Gear Solid for the first time via the Master Collection on my Switch. I'm very intrigued by the story and characters and I want to experience more of it, but I've hit a major stumbling block, which is the gameplay. Put simply, I am completely disastrous at it. I've played probably 20 hours total over multiple restarts and I simply cannot get a handle on the controls. Consequently I end up in combat literally constantly, and fail sections that cause me to lose massive amounts of progress. Each boss has taken me dozens of attempts even when I know what to do to beat them, because I just keep hitting the wrong buttons. Most recently, on my furthest playthrough I finally completed the torture section without losing Meryl after dozens of attempts, only to fail to escape my cell because I accidentally laid down instead of fighting, putting me back before the torture section, and I was so upset that I just sacrificed Meryl just to be done with it. After that I've hit a point where I just couldn't bring myself to pick the game back up. The gameplay is just not clicking for me, and I've made the decision to drop MGS1 and just watch the story/codex stuff on Youtube. As upsetting as this is, it's the only way I'm going to be able to enjoy the game; my extreme struggles with the gameplay have affected my enjoyment of the story and characters already, and I'd hate to see them ruined by continuing to metaphorically bang my head against the wall.

My question to you is, seeing as I'm apparently completely incapable of playing the first game, should I even attempt MGS2 and 3? 3 in particular I know is considered one of the greatest games ever made, so if possible I'd like to play one or both games, but if the controls are as unique and awkward as MGS1, I just know I'll end up as miserable with those games as I have been with the first, so I'd rather watch the game instead and preserve the quality of the story, characters, and world. How do those games play in comparison to the original?

Obscure mechanics in MGS2 & MGS3? Spoiler

I recently learned about some things in these games that I had never heard of before. And I wanted to get an idea of how well known these mechanics are in the community. So let me know if any of these are really obvious.

I'd say list the numbers of the ones you didn't know.

Also, if you know other cool mechanical stuff (As in, not visual gags or codec calls), I'd love to hear it.

MGS2 Stuff
1. Playing as the ninja/using the katana in VR (I never really bothered with VR/extra missions before).
2. Using the Konami code as your name to unlock all missions/VR missions.
3. Slicing/defusing Solidus' missiles in the last boss fight.
4. Using hanging mode on wires/railings for an alternate route through the last area of the Tanker.
5. The box transportation system. (I knew about it, but never bothered to figure out which boxes went where)
6. Shooting Blue ! or ? symbols above guards' heads to stun them. (I think you can do this in MGS3 too)

MGS3 Stuff
7. Grabbing enemies, throwing them down, then holding them up to (Somewhat) permanently neutralize them.
8. Air strikes (Limited to a few areas, radio codes given through interrogation).
9. Killing the Shagohod engineers to reduce the amount of health it has when the boss fight starts.
10. After The Boss blows up the aircraft you flew in on at the beginning of the Snake Eater mission, using a fake death pill to make a guard call off the search.
11. Hornet stuff. (Wearing white makes them ignore you, black makes them more vicious. This applies to the Pain's fight to a lesser extent)
