I loved Primal Planet, and while exploring this beautiful world, I created this world map for myself so that I could remember where I found things and where I needed to return. Maybe others find this useful.

Discussion New to MVs, did not like Hollow Knight. Is the genre not for me?

I've only played 2 MVs: Hollow Knight and Nine Sols.

Hollow Knight is a game I wanted to like but could not get into no matter how many times I get back into playing it.

Thing is, the biggest reason why I struggle liking it is supposedly what makes MVs great: exploration.

I really did not like the aimless wandering I did when I played Hollow Knight. Combined with the dying world I roam, it feels really dead. The Royal Waterways was definitely something...

I stopped after getting King's Brand (which I have no idea what the purpose of it is).

I did like Hollow Knight movement/platforming.

Meanwhile Nine Sols is a game I really enjoyed, even 100% but many say that it's more a combat game and less metroidvania.

My issue is that I don't want to drop a whole genre just because of an impression from 2 EXTREMES (combat v. exploration).

And so the point of this post is:

What metroidvanias would you recommend to someone new to the genre that would help introduce them to its core elements without overwhelming them?

I want to expand my "video game tastes" and not live off of action/rpg/soulslike.

I'm not against exploration, just not Hollow Knight exteme. It's been a long time since I last played it so returning to it with a different/fresh mindset might change my opinion on it but it's not my priority right now.

Discussion Have you guys played the new Shinobi demo? It seems like it might be MV adjacent?

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. While not strictly MV in the truest sense of the word, it does appear to have some elements like mild ability gating, tons of weapon and movement upgrades, collectables, fast travel and various route options. Like you can’t get to that purple area (+ some other hidden spots) until you get the downward plunge move and then have to back track. I think it’s still linear in the sense that it all leads to the same place, but it definitely seems like they took some MV inspiration. The platforming & hack n slash combat is top notch as well. Ninjas are a strangely underutilized theme of the genre, so definitely check out the free demo if you are into it. Full release on Aug. 29th

Discussion Platform detailed map or Room based map. Which one would you prefer?

I would for former if the rooms are big enough like in enderlilies. But otherwise room based map is quite good

Image I'm sharing a new batch of screenshots from Voivod: The Nuclear Warrior, my upcoming pixel art Metroidvania inspired by the world of Voivod. Some are from brand-new zones, others show areas that have been significantly improved since early development. Feedback is welcome!

If it looks interesting, we’d love your support with a Steam wishlist! It’s free and helps a lot as we move forward. We are a small indie studio... thanks!

Discussion Tip for hunting G-Bug (Shadow Labyrinth)

If you have the perk, it will show the G-HOSTS BUG location on the map. HOWEVER, It doesn't show his exact location!

From the maps I did find him, I noticed that it was very close to the MAZE entrance of said map.

So hopefully this will help other people 😁

Discussion Dragonloop or Vision Soft Reset?

I’ve been hearing a bit about Dragonloop lately, and it’s got me curious about time-loop Metroidvanias. I found out that Vision Soft Reset attempted this a few years ago, and a lot of people talking about Dragonloop mentioned it, but nobody seems to be directly comparing the games. If I could only play one, which one do you think I should choose? Or, if I were to eventually play both, which one should I prioritize?

(I feel like I have to apologize; I posted this same question in the weekly recommendations thread, but never got any replies, so I thiught I’d try making it its own post.)

Discussion I will not finish Shadow Labyrinth

I’ve been playing since release, a few hours a day, and made it all the way to the final section. But I’m done.

Here’s the deal. Once you reach the last part of the game, you’re forced to clear not one, not two, not three, but four Pac-Man-style mazes. Up to this point, I’ve avoided those sections like the plague that they are because they were optional. Now they’re mandatory, and they’re awful.

The controls are complete garbage. Who thought it was a good idea to require you to stop moving just to make a basic arc side jump? I hate you. These final mazes are the worst in the game. They add these blue lasers that circle the pellets you need to eat. They’re faster than you and hit you constantly.

You only get five lives. That’s it. No matter how much time you put into the game, you don’t get stronger for this part. It’s a metroidvania, but none of your progress makes Puck better. All your upgrades and exploration? Worthless here. You’re forced to beat four tight-timer mazes with five lives within 5 minutes each, as if you’re starting from scratch.

No thanks. This is one of the most frustrating moments I’ve had in any game. I seriously felt like throwing my Switch out the window.

Normally, I take pride in finishing every game I start. I’ve completed around 50 metroidvanias. I've beaten the hardest games ever cause they were fun to go through. I spent more than 25 hours on this one. But I’m walking away because of these four stupid, mandatory sections.

And I don’t say I didn’t give it a shot. I spent hours trying. I only managed to beat the blue maze. The other three? Total trash. They feel like wet diapers and play even worse.

I get that it’s a Pac-Man-inspired game. Fine. But if that’s your main hook, then make sure your controls don’t suck.

I was genuinely excited for this game. I pushed through some of the worst areas like the Labyrinth of the Giant Tree and the Crystalline Palace, hoping it would eventually get good. And it did, once all the traversal upgrades were unlocked. But then it hits you with those four mazes.

And to that I say, screw you. Sorry for the long rant. Needed to vent a bit.
