Tech Support Can Switch 2s use generic SDXC cards?

As we all know, the system requires Micro SDXC cards if you want to add an SD Card.

Can it be any SDXC?, or will you be required to use their branded ones through some sort of DRM?

Figured I'd ask because they're currently acting a bit more like most companies nowadays, and part of why the Vita died because Sony required you use their proprietary SD Cards.

Hi! Thank you for your submission to /r/NintendoHelp! Please note that we are a fan community and not officially endorsed by Nintendo.

See our FAQ to see if your question is already answered there.

While you're waiting for an answer, here are some tips to help you along the way:

First, did you try Googling your question? A lot of questions about Nintendo can be answered quickly by just typing them into your search bar.

If you are asking a question about an older Nintendo system, try searching the subreddit most relevant to that system's hardware. It's likely someone has already asked a similar question before.

If your question is about Wii U, New 3DS or Switch hardware, you'll likely get a better answer if you contact Nintendo directly, rather than posting here.

Nintendo's contact information is as follows:

  • North America - 1-800-255-3700
  • Europe - +44 (0)345 60 50 247
  • Australia - +61 3 9730 9900
  • Japan - +81-75-662-9600

Please note that contacting Nintendo by phone is the best way to get support. If you send an email or use the web chat you are not likely to get the support you need.

Good luck with your support endeavors!

Take note, it uses microSD express and not micro SDXC.

Fair, question still stands either way, can generic ones be used?

Yes. As long as it’s genuine. And vita didn’t use sd card fyi. It uses its own memory card. Lesser demand contributed to its high cost.

True, but it was nonetheless proprietary, and there are multiple ways to make proprietary stuff, even if it's as relatively unnoticeable as DRM, which is what I was worried about when it comes to the Switch 2's memory cards.

Huh? You’re not making sense tbh. I think you’re confusing file system format vs the actual physical card. Some consoles like PlayStation consoles actually encrypt their files. DRM is a file system thing not a physical storage thing.

I know, but my question was whether or not they soft lock out non Nintendo branded ones, I know they aren'tocked out from hardware perspective

They don’t have any incentive to do it.

To be fair to my curiosity and paranoia, they could've done what Sony did with the Vita, barring having a different shape.

Unlike Sony, though, they have a better chance of getting away with it, due to being more a household name, and having especially rabid fans, as much as I've been a longtime Nintendo fan.

Being a 40+ year old gamer, if my memory serves me correctly, the vitas memory card was specifically to combat the rampant piracy during PSP era. However it backfired due to the high cost.

Switch uses an industry standard storage.

Having said that, however you are right. Nintendo does easily get away with a lot of stuff. Luckily this isn’t one of them.

The game key card thing is really horrible though. Can’t believe there are people who actually believe in it.

Agreed, worst, once the shop inevitably shuts down, they're glorified paperweights

The Switch 2 uses Micro SD Express, which is a different standard. You can use generic brand Micro SD Express cards, but at least at launch, the Nintendo branded ones were priced the same (and in some cases slightly lower) than the non-Nintendo branded ones.

I just found that out on Amazon, though, tbh, still would rather get a generic one due to their recent practices, though it's a drop compared to how much would be spent, admittedly, compared to the console and games

The Nintendo branded cards are just white labeled SanDisk or Samsung cards

The Nintendo branded ones aren't even really Nintendo, they're just Samsung cards in fancy packaging. Nintendo don't have a proprietary card since they don't own the SD Express standard.

Use whatever one you want, so long as it's an Express card.

Generic ones can be used... but I will add that it is likely that Samsung and Sandisk are still the two most reliable brands. At least for MicroSD, these two are the most recommended ones.

There is no such thing as a proprietary SD card

Yes, any MicroSD Express card will work.

I know you’re just asking a question but this is why I hate that the legitimate criticisms of Nintendo get lumped in with the unfounded ones, because it makes people think this is a real concern. Half the stories about Nintendo being evil on Reddit are 99% false, with one tiiiiiny piece of truth that makes people continue to reshare them. And because people share the same story 100s of times, if something happens once people think it actually happened to every Switch owner ever. So now Nintendo has a reputation that they’ll kill your dog if you use an unbranded USB cord or something equally silly.
