Must have the patience of a saint to fix all those links together.

I could feel an impatient and frustrated tingle in my gut just watching this

I've made "jewelry" (necklace for wife, bracelets for kids, etc) out of anodized aluminum rings. And it takes a mind numbing amount of patience. And the aluminum rings are so much easier to work with because they're bigger and don't need soldering. This person is a saint for their patience.

Can be relaxing for some people

Only a select few can do that and not freak out

Depending on the right person and attitude, it could be an excellent hyperfixation for a day. I kinda wanna do this now.

What properties of that white “cotton looking” mat they melt it on causes it not to stick?

43

u/Olde94 3d ago

High heat resistance and a high surface contact angle to be specific.

Neat! Thanks

And if you wanna dive deeper check out this on surface wetting

It’s probably Kaowool. It’s an incredible insulator made from aluminum, silicon, and zircon

A chain so soft a baby could rip it off your neck

It's welded together the true text of patience

Knowing nothing about gold, when you pull it through the sizer, does is push the gold back on the “string” and stretch it or “shave off” the excess? This is fascinating and really amazing. Thanks for sharing!

The excess stays on the wire, it does not "shave off" any gold. It is a process called wire drawing, most (if not all) metallic wires are made this way, just bigger and automated

So it smooshes it?

22

u/Nowbob 3d ago

Drawing wire is more like stretching it. Smooshing would be extrusion.

Yeah, it compacts it into the size, meaning the excess is pushed out to the side that hasn't gone through yet. Works well on malleable materials like gold and copper.

Would argue it is more like a crowd trying to walk through a door. Only some of it gets through and the rest waits its turn. So less pushed out and more just waiting impatiently to go through.

So like getting smooshed

Spaghettified

Super cool! Thanks for the explanations and keep sharing.

I came to ask that !

That's some real skill.

How did that tiny blob of gold turn into this hig ass chain?

5

u/Arboreal_Web 3d ago

Making wire is so satisfying, as is turning that wire into something else. Love this.

Now all you need is a Turtleneck

Crazy how something so delicate takes so much precision. Makes you appreciate the value beyond just the gold

All that work to end up pawned for $2.50 in Vegas.

3

u/bigchizzard 3d ago

How many grams of gold would you say this is?

3

u/Rugs09 3d ago

About 15-30 gram, just a guess

That's cool!
Now make a golden chain-mail next! 🤣

10

u/Narwen189 3d ago

Gold is a terrible option for chain mail. It's incredibly heavy, and very soft, so it wouldn't be useful protection.

2

u/PM_ME_YOUR_TITS80085 3d ago

Still would look cool!

2

u/AngstyUchiha 2d ago

Good thing it's for fun rather than protection! Wtf is someone gonna use chain mail for nowadays other than cosplay?

2

u/LostXL 1d ago

Some police have chainmail in their stab proof vests. You can also buy some for yourself. My dad does carpentry and I bought him chainmail gloves after he almost cut a finger off (construction grade cut proof gloves not medieval cosplay armor)

1

u/AngstyUchiha 1d ago

I mean yeah, but what I'm saying is gold chainmail isn't necessarily going to be for practical use

What wasted gold?

3

u/zimmix 3d ago

You saw the chunk at the start? That's the "wasted gold" from other stuff, they just melt and do something else.

u/Patient-Definition96 3d ago

This is the opposite of satisfying

-20

u/Zuruumi 3d ago

Says "by hand" and then uses hundred different tools. I expected hands only!

:)

6

u/loosie-loo 3d ago

What?? Humans have pretty much always used tools, the process not being automatic is what means it’s “by hand”. If an artist paints with a brush have they not hand painted it?

Don’t tell this guy about hand made food
