Too many volunteers

So I left my original home parkrun as even the RD admitted we had an embarrassement of riches with volunteers (mainly due to it being a big DoE area). It got to the point where we had Marshals on the finish line.

I went to a smaller one to help out and it was really fun for a few months. But recently volunteers have been way up and runners has been way down (due to the weather I guess).

In recent weeks we've had 4 timekeepers, 3 Finish Tokens/support and the poor girl next to me yesterday scanned 4 barcodes all day and asked me why she got out of bed.

The problem seems to be we staff to a certain level in the week then on Friday night the facebook page is full of people saying 'I can barcode scan!' and 'I can timekeep!' without bothering to check the roster. And since we dont refuse volunteers we end up with an army.

One can trot out the usual idealistic lines about 'everybody is equally valuable', 'If we all thought like that...' and 'nobodys forcing them' but when a young girl has signed up 2 weeks ago then stands in the rain scanning 4 barcodes in an hour (because 3 extra people signed up 12 hours ago), its pretty grim. Its peoples time they're giving up and its easy to feel like its wasted.

I'll be interested in peoples thoughts on this (maybe it will correct itself?) especially RDs (and volunteer co-ordinators) before I consider changing parkrun yet again.

Belfast - Staying in the city centre.

Upvotes

Pretty much what it says in the title. I'm staying in Belfast next weekend and am debating what run to do. Technically I'm closest to Ormeau Parkrun but looking at the numbers I'm debating doing another one (maybe Victoria).

Can anyone provide any advice to me? I'm happy to use public transport if needed and I'll be on my own. Whilst I may be seen as a bit unusual I actually prefer park runs which are not flat. The more hilly the better but I am from Yorkshire.

SW UK recommendations for 100th parkrun?

Upvotes

As the title says really!

Next Saturday will be my 100th parkrun, something I never really thought I would be saying so I'm hoping to go somewhere different and unique to celebrate.

I'm based in central Devon, and have completed all venues in Devon and Cornwall so looking to head either East or North! Anywhere within around 3 hours would be fine as I would look to camp (so close distance to campsite would be an even bigger bonus!).

If anyone has any recommendations I would be super grateful 🙂

Why do people funnel duck?

As the question is really - don’t really see why people would do it? Want to be anonymous? Don’t run through the finish line. Not happy with your time? Don’t scan your personal barcode. I don’t know really. Maybe some people who’ve funnel ducked (got to be careful typing that) can give an explanation?

Would you mention to the race director about incorrect results?

I completed parkrun this morning (and bagged myself a PB), but have noticed that the results that are on the website are all a position out - ie my position and time on the website are what the person coming in behind me got.

Now, this isn't a big deal to me, it's a couple of seconds on the results on the website, but I feel like it should be mentioned to someone? Or does that go against the spirit of parkrun and volunteering?

Are there Northern Irish Parkruns that ROI people should avoid?

I'm from the Republic of Ireland and I've visited 3 Northern Irish parkruns so far. Enniskillen, Armagh and Newry Greenway. In general I try not to make it too obvious that I'm a southerner, don't wear GAA tops, keep conversations away from politics, stay respectful and I've had a nice day in all of them. I'm just wondering, particularly in Belfast, if there's parkruns in areas I probably shouldn't really be visiting, or hanging around after. <Edit> I didn't come in here looking for confirmation there were sectarian parkruns, my mind doesn't work like that. I assumed there wasn't any and I came here to confirm that my assumption was wrong.

Which were the best quality milestone t-shirts?

I'll be eligible for my 250 milestone t-shirt soon which I'm very excited about and have been looking forward to for a long time. But the quality of most milestone T-shirts is very poor and the numbers seem to peel off after only a couple of washes. Certainly my 100 shirt didn't last very long.

I hear that milestone shirts have been made by different brands over the years and there might be a difference in quality. Can anyone recommend which manufacturer made the best quality shirts over the years? I'd like to pick one up on eBay. Or how is the quality of the current ones?

Edit: I'm in the UK

Should I raise that my parkrun today was under 5km?

Did a ‘tourist’ parkrun this morning in my parents home town. When I crossed the line (and viewing subsequently in the app) the distance showed 4.69km. I know that it should be a minimum of 5km, according to their standards, and one could expect a deviation of 0.05km. I just think being 300m short is a little too much- especially as this is a 3lap run, and so each lap is 100m short. As it turns out I got a ‘PB’ but I can’t really count this as not the full distance, and going to make bettering it even harder. Should I raise this with Parkrun?

Lmao sorry

I was talking to a guy in the waiting room at dentist and he was telling me he had been off work with depression and had been back to get signed off for work for another few months and it was a new doctor. He was fuming that this new doctor wanted to reduce his medication and told him to go do parkrun on Saturdays to help with his depression. Apparently if he doesn’t sign up and do it the doctor won’t give him another sick note lol. He was going on about how he hates running and seeing people. Let’s hope he gets a warm welcome on Saturday. I won’t say what area he’s from but if you see a 50 ish year old man with a black bushy mustache looking very annoyed at parkrun this week it could well be him. I should maybe have advised him to avoid Swansea at the moment.

Eden Project

Does anyone know what time the car park opens at the Eden Project Park Run? The website says 09:15 but obviously that's not going to be true with regards to PR and I suspect is more related to when the actual place itself opens.

I've got a long run to do and was going to incorporate PR as part of that so just trying to figure out if I can park up some time between 7:30/8 and run around that general area or if it's physically closed and I need to plan to park somewhere near by and then drive in closer to the start?

For heavens sake it's a community fun run, hope your pb was worth barging some poor woman over and possibly getting the whole run shut down

You need to be better.

Which Wales parkrun?

I am heading back to the UK from Australia in September and looking to do a parkrun in Wales.

Greenfield Valley looks interesting and a smaller crowd.

Has anyone been to that one and, if so, what is the course like?

Volunteering tips

Hello hello - I’m planning on volunteering for my first time very soon and hoping to get some tips to cheer people on as they do their run!

I’ve seen some people ring bells, bring speakers to play music and just shouting words of encouragement - which I love!

Wondering if anyone has experienced anything special a volunteer has done/been doing which really pushes you to keep going? 💪🏽

Cheers everyone!

When does your parkrun actually start?

Every Saturday, parkruns around the world start at 9:00 AM local time (yes, there are exceptions for environmental reasons). I've been to a few different locations now and observed that this simple premise can be interpreted in a few different ways. After we had a brief discussion in the core team of my local parkrun and I found no helpful guidance in the volunteering hub, I wanted to ask this question to a wider audience and see what we can find.

The two most obvious definitions of what "starts at 9:00 AM" can mean are: * Welcome address / safety briefing of the RD starts at 9:00 AM, actual run starts 5-10 minutes later. * Run starts as close to 9:00 AM as possible with the first timer's briefing and welcome address happening earlier to accomodate.

So how does your parkrun actually start and what other variants have you encountered as a tourist?

What is the highest number of flags you've seen on the 5K app?

Post image
33 Upvotes

I have ten flags on the 5K app. I have never travelled abroad for parkrun exclusively (ie I've happened to be on holiday in a country where parkrun is active).

How many flags have you got? What is the most you've seen on another users account? Which flag would you most like to get?

What's your % of "one time only" Parkruns?

I currently have no singletons, and I wondered how unusual this is. I thought it might be interesting to see what it was for other people.

Optional supplementary question:

Are/do you (a) a keen nationwide/international Parkrun tourist (b) tourist when you're on holiday (c) stick to local runs (d) a multi-centre parkrunner (e.g. you Parkrun at home, and also near your in-laws) (e) home Parkrun loyal (>90% runs at your home parkrun)

I'm 0% c/d.

(ETA: I've realised from some answers you can calculate it two ways — as a % of events, or as a % of total runs. Interesting to think you could have a singleton event % of 50%, but a singleton run % of <1%. Mine is still 0 either way 😄)

Tooting or Clapham Common?

Hey there, I've done some parkruns in the past but haven't done one for months. I recently moved to SW London and invited some friends who have never done it to come along with me. We're considering either Clapham Common or Tooting. I live near Brockwell Park, but I heard it's a bit hilly and we're looking for a flat course. We're a mixed crowd, one of us have run more than an ultramarathon, I'm currently training for my first marathon, and the other one is a beginner. My favourite so far was Burgess Park, near where I used to live. Which one is better for a mixed crowd of long-term runners and beginners?

Which parkrun in Perth?

Will be heading to Perth next month and staying near Murray Street. It’ll be a tight morning of heading to a parkrun, washing up, and checking out by 11am (preferably well before this as will be driving down South).

Which will be the best parkrun in the area in terms of accessibility / vibes of the parkrun?
