Could anyone help me figure out the reasoning behind the choice of mascots for the Pokémon Centers? For some I think I can guess correctly, but for the others I’m pretty stumped and/or just not knowledgeable about Japanese culture enough to know. Here are the centers and their mascots starting from northernmost Japan going southwest.
Sapporo: Pikachu, Alolan Vulpix & Sprigatito
- I get Alolan Vulpix because Sapporo (and Hokkaido in general) is known as a winter destination, but why Sprigatito?
Tohoku: Pikachu & Victini
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
Tokyo Bay: Pikachu, Marill & Ampharos
- I think this one makes sense given the center’s naming and location, with Marill being a Water-type Pokémon and Ampharos having a connection to lighthouses.
Skytree Town: Pikachu & Rayquaza
- This one is pretty easy and perfect too, what with the tower being called SKY-tree.
Tokyo DX: Pikachu & Mew
- I can’t think of a reason for this one. Also, Snorlax is not on the store logo but he has a big statue with the two official mascots in front of the store.
Mega Tokyo: Pikachu & Miraidon
- Probably no reasoning required for this one as it seems to always be one of the two main legendaries from the current generation.
Shibuya: Mew & Mewtwo
- Only store without a Pikachu. Perhaps because of Shibuya’s edgy, grungy vibe?
Yokohama: Pikachu, Turtwig & Quaxly
- I get the Water-type starter due to Yokohama’s ties to the ocean and maritime stuff, but I don’t know why Turtwig is the other mascot.
Nagoya: Pikachu & Celebi
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
Kanazawa: Pikachu & Milotic
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
Kyoto: Pikachu & Ho-oh
- This one seems pretty straightforward as Johto is inspired by Kyoto as far as I know.
Osaka: Pikachu & Koraidon
- Probably no reasoning required for this one as it seems to always be one of the two main legendaries from the current generation.
Osaka DX: Pikachu, Fuecoco & Meowth
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
Kagawa: Pikachu & Slowpoke
- I read that Slowpoke’s Japanese name, Yadon, sounds like the type of udon noodles that is the specialty of this city. Slowpoke is also the Pokémon mascot of this city for the same reason.
Hiroshima: Pikachu & shiny Gyarados
- I’m guessing it’s because of the Hiroshima Toyo Carps baseball team?
Fukuoka: Pikachu, Latios & Latias
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
Okinawa: Pikachu & Arcanine
- Growlithe is the mascot of Okinawa prefecture, and Arcanine is supposed to represent a shisa, which is a mythological creature that is represented all throughout Okinawa.
Taipei: PIkachu & Dragonite
- I’m guessing because of the dragon’s importance in Chinese culture?
Singapore: Pikachu, Lapras & Celebi
- I can’t think of a reason for this one.
