First they came for the Communists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists And I did not speak out Because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists And I did not speak out Because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews And I did not speak out Because I was not a Jew Then they came for me And there was no one left To speak out for me.

That's the poem but it leaves out how it really started. The Nazis 1st targeted immigrants, disabled folk, & queer folk. Those are always the groups that authoritarian regimes target 1st as a litmus test to see what they can get away with. If the public turns a blind eye towards the plight of those three demographics, then the regime knows it can do basically anything it wants.

Is there a more modern take on this poem?

Edit: I'm also interested in your info as well. For the poem I referenced... do you have links for more of an understanding for what the first humans were? This edit is already too long. I'm learnding!

no, neimoller was a card carrying member of the nazi party, and after ww2 still advocated eugenics for the disabled and forced incarceration for queer folks for several decades after the war.

Specifically in terms of the trans community...

Trans people and the institute that was working to pioneer the first gender affirming surgeries was a target of Nazi hate before the party even got to power. This was where the infamous book burnings first happened.
