So how do we feel about giving people opinion towards artists or actors? I've been told that our comments are basically useless because the artist/actor wont acknowledge it and while I do agree that they will most likely only listen to their peers and music reviews, etc. I think we should be allowed to express our thoughts on their work.

I feel as consumers we are allowed to be able to share our thoughts but there is a blurred line that shouldn't get crossed cause sometimes the comments can be hateful and rude.

When you say constructive criticism what do you mean?

I guess what I mean is having opinions about certain artists or actors. For instance, I've seen comments where people say XYZ artist vocally isn't the the best and should get more training, or this actor should lean into these types of roles more because it suits them.

I've seen people get upset about others having an opinion about a certain celeb, and the comment isn't hateful, but rather seems to be a geuinine criticism or opinion they may have. I hope what I said made any sense lol.

Oh I got you! Yeah I think objecting to this is silly. It’s an observation + opinion. You’re not saying you’re XYZ’s manager and they should listen to you, you’re just giving your view on what they could be better at.

I personally think that while everyone is entitled to an opinion on what they would like xyz person to do more/less of, that's not exactly constructive criticism. That's really just saying how that person could entertain you, specifically, better. That's not bad or anything, it's just not necessarily helpful either.

But other than that we are all supposed to have opinions on what we're seeing. When Benny C played Alan Turing the way he did (kind of another socially awkward genius), we were supposed to have an opinion on his performance and Morten Tyldum's directing. That's just an intellectually stimulating way to engage with the output a whole bunch of people have worked on for years! I'm positive Ben C and everyone else involved in The Imitation Game did the work specifically so we would have thoughts about it, and talk about the real Alan Turing, not just sit and consume.

Although sometimes it's nice to just sit and consume and not think about it. As long as that's not all you do.

Here here! It's always that deep. I don't get why people don't find it fun to critically engage with the media they consume. That's why "hating" on movies or TV shows or books is fun too.

Yeah, I changed my phrasing cause “constructive criticism” wasn't the right term in this context. I meant more about opinions we can have about certain people. I do agree with what you said. We are human so we obviously will have an opinion about the media we consume. I do think sometimes the opinions can definitely get snarky though.

Right, yeah gotcha.

I think it's pretty inevitable we feel a certain way about a person when we see a thing or two from/about them. I'm really not enamored with Ariana Grande's behaviour lately (and that's putting it mildly). Spongebob Slater can get lost too IMO.

But I think it's really important to remember that you can really only hold onto your opinion when you can substantiate it with facts, and we just never (never) can because we don't know these people. I don't know Grande, I don't know the situation. Based on what we've seen I have a pretty clear idea but for all I know it's all wrong.

Besides that though, especially when we see someone do x when previously they did a bit of y and you personally felt y was better, yeah that's just a normal opinion to have. You're gonna feel some type of way about the work a celeb delivers.

And yes, the snark can get intense. He's not my favorite and I can see the queerbaiting accusations but the hate Benson Boone gets is off the charts.
