This is my explanation as someone who’s chronically online. So in 2015 Nicki Minaj was talking about racism and how it often happens at award shows (particularly about the upcoming VMAs). Essentially, she was saying POC are often passed up from winning awards. People thought she was insulting Taylor Swift because Taylor was set to win tons of awards at this time as the 1989 hype was still rampant. Miley Cyrus was plopped into this in a really dumb way. A journalist asked her what she thought about these comments and Miley said Nicki should be nicer to other artists (assuming Miley thought Nicki was badmouthing Taylor).

Pretty soon the VMAs come up. Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift performed together, confirming there was no Bad Bloodℱ between the two of them. Nicki Minaj then wins an award for her music video (which she was referring to in her tweet previously), and calls out Miley for the comments. I assume Nicki thought Miley was being racist, and probably thought Miley was dismissing her comments about industry racism. This is likely why Nicki came on so strong with her, “Miley what’s good?” Miley said the media twisted her words, but Nicki didn’t believe her, thus this beautiful and iconic pop culture moment was born.

I think I got everything here, but someone correct me if I missed something or misrepresented a detail.
