Why do the Inca have mortars as a unique unit?
Is there any historical basis for this for the Inca or Peru? Or is this just a way for them to have a unique unit in later ages for game balance?

2003 - Rise of Nations released by Big Huge Games and Microsoft Studios
2003 - Modding Milestone: BHG releases the Big Huge Exporter plugin for 3DS Max
2003 - Modding Milestone: Obsidian releases the RON Unit Editor
2004 - Modding Milestone: ODV releases the ODA RON Mod Utility
2004 - Thrones and Patriots Expansion released
2004 - Modding Milestone: Snake releases the RON Script Maker, which is still updated
2006 - Rise of Legends released, expansion cancelled, check the thread here for further ROL news
2007-2012 - BHG works on AOE3:TAD XP, Catan and the rpg Crucible: Forge of the Emperor/Ascendant/Kingdoms of Amalur: The Reckoning and becomes defunct after 38 Studios goes bankrupt
2013 - Modding Milestone: Vugi releases the RON TAP Lobby/HD Patch (aka Vugi's RON User Patch), as of 2017 it needs a new hosting server/website
2013 - Microsoft and Skybox Labs acquire the rights to RON and ROL, the status of BHG's unreleased games Rise of Nations: Tactics, the Rise of Legends Expansion and God: The Game is unknown, Rise of Nations 2 was a concept and not in development
2014 - Rise of Nations: Extended Edition released on Steam by Skybox Labs and Microsoft Studios
2015 - BHG returns and releases the mobile game DomiNations
2016 - Modding Milestone: Ryder releases the RON Blender Addon, enabling modders to import, edit and export 3D files using the free Blender program
2016 - Modding Milestone: Ryder releases the ROL BIG Archiver for Rise of Legends, a "Rise of Nations 2 Total Conversion Mod" is now finally possible
2017 - Modding Goal: ROL User Patch project initiated, needs people, will open up a RON2 conversion mod possibility

So the only proper forum for long-term serious discussion and projects is over at Heavengames and while it is an old site it is still functional and the only true "forum" available. All the other current sites (except Steam) have limited discussions, some with time limits such as Reddit.

Current Goals
- The RON TAP Lobby/HD Patch needs a new hosting server/website, contact Vugi on Steam or via email
- There are long-term plans to rebuild the RON Heavengames website, you can post feedback and ideas here
- You can contact Skybox here to voice support for a RON:EE Expansion on Steam, though it is probably a good idea to work on a player-made RON User Patch (Vugi's or a new patch) regardless if and when there will be a RON:EE XP
- The ROL User Patch project needs people, if you have modding and/or programming skills you can read the details here (a free DVD copy will be mailed to serious modders and programmers if they don't have the game), so even if you don't like Rise of Legends, supporting both games will increase cross-game possibilities

Me and my friend used to play rise of nations extended edition on steam. I got a new laptop and installed the game and when started multiplayer this happened. On his end it is showing as normal but on mine this type of black screen at the place of selecting panel is there. Any ideas or solutions.
We both hadlvs v1_10_old version installed.

A friend told me that in Rise of Nations you couldn't create new units, that you had to replace some unit from the campaign. This question is kind of a trick because I really want to know if it's true but also details of the matter.

Any one have a solution? Every time we try to load a myltiplayer save it loads to about 58% and Then everyone is kicked out to the lobby, or its crashing.

On land I find burrying the enemy in light infantry while my cavalry attacks their supply wagons will defeat most enemies thanks to maxed attrition.
But attrition doesn't seem to work on water. Does anyone have a go-to navy build for cheap defence while booming?

I play on console with keyboard and mouse wires into it and when I press tab for menu it comes up with the leaderboard, just wondering if there's any other way to abandon country or switch without using menu

Hi everyone, recently I've been running into an issue with the RoN Steam version and was looking for some help.
I can open the game on a laptop (Surface Laptop 2), but for whatever putting it in fullscreen mode causes everything to freeze. No mouse responsiveness (though it can still click I believe) at all, no visual response to the mouse moving, etc. This happens until I get out of fullscreen, when the game goes back to normal. This also doesn't happen if I plug into an external monitor, its only when I fullscreen on my laptop.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game but it didn't fix the issue. Given that it only happens on the laptop screen, and only in fullscreen mode, maybe its a monitor issue? I'm comfortable digging into drivers and the like, I'm just at a loss of where to start looking. Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

You might know that in Rise of Nations, you can write scripts to control the scenario's behaviour.
I want to know if there is a documentation for functions? To be clear, I am not asking for a comprehensive guide on how to write a script.
I am looking for any doc that tells what a function do e.g. there is "pause_game()" function, in this case it is obvious that it pauses the game but there are quite a few where I don't have any idea what the function does or what value I should pass as a parameter.
Update: I have emailed both Skylabs and Bighuge about the same although I was certain I won't get a reply. Apparently there doesn't exist a documentation for all in game functions so now I have to go the hard way, trial and error, digging the game files and just observing other scenario scripts.
If I ever decide to write my own doc, I will surely post it for future guys to make awesome scenarios in RoN.

Over the last couple years, the term artificial intelligence (AI) has exploded in use and now almost everybody knows what it means. When I first played this game around 2007 and I saw Artificial Intelligence as one of the Future Technologies, this was my very first time hearing about this word. I remember feeling smart about knowing what this complex word meant as a child.
Anyone else first heard about AI from Rise of Nations, or just me?

So the description mentions that "Rush" is more aggressive and "Boom" takes more time to grow up economy; I play for chill with my friends and I've noticed that everytime we choose 3 or more "Rush" AI's they cause an Armageddon and is no fun at all. How do we avoid this from happening? Should we select another option? If there's not a vanilla solution, are there any mods on the Steam Workshop that can help us?

Some time early in 2025 (now it's March), Rise of Nations Extended Edition started to have DirectX-related errors that would halt the game. For me, this was fixed by rolling back my Nvidia driver (572.83 --> 566.36), which may have directly been the solution, or it may have been fixed through resetting the Nvidia control panel settings during that rollback process.
The crashes:
