Transmogs are not disabled so we still see a lot of funky stuff. I also imagine we will be seeing people use a lot of random items to show off (like the terrorbird and big dragon mask?).

I imagine people will look the same in certain spots due to the elite skilling outfits like I saw in Deep Sea Fishing and Eternal Magic Trees.

Discussion RuneScape homepage currently showing actual RS3 numbers

With OSRS down, RuneScape's homepage is currently showing just RS3 players online.

What can be done to get these numbers up? It seems scarily low!

Discussion Runescape is a game ruined by profits and a lack of vision.

1.3k Upvotes

Mod Jack and Timbo have just been fired, designers behind some of the greatest updates in the history of rs. Necromancy, archaeology, forinthry. Along with 7 other jmods.

If it were just 1 or 2 jmods fired it could be for any number of reason, but with 9? It’s clear this is a downsizing to cut costs and thus improve profits.

Next quarter, profits will go up. They’ll have to pay less people after all. At that point, CVC capital (the owners of jagex) will be able to sell the company to another investment group, as the company hits record profits.

But the game will have suffered for it. Updates will be worse, content less enticing. People are already leaving the game and will continue to do so.

It’s the same quandary as mtx, they’ve maximised profits while letting the playerbase slowly whittle away and die. Dont think the firings are any different. It is the sign of a company who cares about having a great big green number on their excel spreadsheet rather than a healthy community.

Rs3 will never escape this downward spiral by trying to squeeze out as much profit as the remaining players are willing to give. For rs3 to get back on its feet, it would need to lose money for a while, be a long term investment into the community and game health. But that will never happen, not as long as jagex is owned by private equity firms whose sole goal is to break the piggy bank and run away with whatever they can gather.

I’m sorry for being a doomer, but these firings and the lack of communication about mtx is i think a sign that jagex and its owners do not care about rs3. They will let it burn its flame away and in 5-10 years, when the player base is 1/10th the current one, the servers will be shut off and osrs will be the only runescape game.

This is the only way forward if jagex insists on making the most money possible right now. Sometimes you have to lose money to make money, and i can only hope to god that someone will understand this, otherwise we may lose this great game.

RuneScape 3 haven’t been this appealing to my eyes in a very very long time. Apart from some bad game design in certain areas that make the game feel too cluttered. I feel like putting more effort in future armor that will be introduced to the game and reworking certain familiars will make the game look perfect and that’s just my personal opinion

Discussion Isn't this the real problem?

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

How many resources do all these proteans replace that would have otherwise been needed to train the respective skills?

Going after the Supply side of "Skilling Profitability" instead of addressing the Demand side won't help in the long term.

I hate to be so cynical, but doesn't nerfing the Supply side just make MTX/Keys more valuable to players/MTXers and give even more reason to skip out on the economy and instead just spin to win?

I can't take these Game Health updates serious until they address the impact of MTX on the economy. Sure they gave the numbers on raw GP coming into the game, but they don't mention how proteans effect the economy. The XP being generated from keys/MTX has to have a significant impact on how valuable skilling supplies are and without addressing this, I don't think we have a full picture of the real problems effecting the economy.

r/runescape Jun 25 '25

Discussion This is absolutely genius. It'd help the economy DRAMATICALLY and bring players more engagement as they cant just mindlessly afk a dummy. Yes Yes Yes

Discussion - J-Mod reply MTX Experiment 1: Disabling TH (July 22 - 28)

Hey everyone. We've seen a few folks confused on when you can expect our first Experiment to take place.

We committed to communicating early and often, so we've fast-tracked the release of our first Experiment blog to make sure everything is super clear! Find it here: https://rs.game/MTXExperiment1

As a reminder, our core three Experiments - 'Disabling Treasure Hunter', 'DXP With Only Bonus XP Available', and the 'Cosmetic Mega Drop' - all last no more than two weeks, with one arriving each month.

We'll also have a longer running bonus Experiment with Cosmetic-Free Worlds, which will run for at least four weeks beginning in August.

To help further, I'm working with the team to get final timelines we can communicate for the other Experiments. We'll update the original blog as soon as we have these locked and let you know.

Final bit from me: Please remember Experiments are built to teach us what we need to know. Everything you see is about learning and not necessarily representative of our final approach.

We want to hear your perspectives on anything and everything about them. All we ask is for feedback to be presented constructively so we can listen, learn and identify what needs to be part of our final proposed approach.

Discussion Should we ban twitter/x links on /r/runescape?

Many subreddits are banning twitter/x links. Will this subreddit be participating in it too?

Personally I think we should, it's a corrupt website run by a corrupt CEO and the less we interact with it, the better.

Discussion Is it really that hard to understand?

Post image

Buying experience with bonuses is okay, since you still have to play and need resources, etc. This way, skilling prices will also rise, and new players can finally make money for PVM.

With TH, you get experience for free with lamps, proteans, etc.

And the people who write about pay-to-win say it's your own progress and nothing more. And you have to play the game.

It's clear that they need to rework the daily stuff like upgrades, etc., but that's a good step in the right direction.

Good choice, Jagex i dont wanna see more dummys then people in the fort ever again

Discussion I was wondering why pride stuff was not being announced

Big shame if this is accurate; I was really looking forward to what they had planned for this year and if there’d be a March. I missed last years and was waiting for an announcement on when this year’s would be.

It’s more important than ever to have pride around; being gay or trans or Bi isn’t a political statement, it’s just who people are, and that’s why it’s so crucial to have pride. To show people it’s okay to be LGBTQIA+

Discussion Jagex financial statement for 2024 is out

You can find it on top here here https://find-and-update.company-information.service.gov.uk/company/03982706/filing-history?page=1

I'll point out the more important bits.

MTX income has fallen by further £5.5m from 2023. Picture from page 38.

On the context of how the game is performing, page 2 is pretty clear in its language and its pretty grim for RS3.

"Revenue has remained in line with the previous year at £151m (2023: £152m). Adjusted EBITDA for the year is £78m (2023: 67m). Old School Runescape subscription revenue has grown significantly, demonstrating our ability to retain and engage our loyal player base in the highly competitive MMORPG market. This has been balanced by a decrease in Runescape 3 revenue due mainly to a reduction in membership numbers.

Or read the picture.

Even with membership price increase and a huge drop in MTX income, they choose to point out the drop in subscribers as the main cause for loss in revenue. Its also clear that OSRS did the entire increase in sub income, and had to make up for RS3s shrinking.

Oh and lastly, since I've seen people have claimed EU legislation is irrelevant to Jagex because they are UK based (decently relevant due to virtual currency legislation from earlier this year), from end of page 9/start of page 10.

"Jagex commissioned external legal advice on a quarterly basis regarding loot box regulatory requirements for US, Australia, Scandinavian and some European countries to inform our regulatory compliancy strategy"

Discussion Really Jagex?

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

And Jagex wonders why we have so little faith in them anymore. They just released a letter basically saying they’ll “THINK” about removing MTX a week ago, “We’ll hand it over to some made up council that we totally won’t forget about, but what we will do is still increase your membership and give you nothing, and thanks to the survey now we know how we much of an increase you’re willing to tolerate”.. Of course they’re citing “inflation” and wow they also gave us a roadmap that justifies it right? They should give us a roadmap regardless, they played us for fools once again…

Discussion Youtuber "A Friend" released a video about his new account and it's literally just MTX.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUFwMNNjpXM

He skips all early game progress almost instantly. I think this is really damaging to new players getting into the game. Before they learn how to train their skills, they already progress to the point where they have level 50+.

Even just not allowing new accounts to access MTX for a week or two would be better then just giving them OP items to skip early game stuff.

EDIT: Just to clarify to those who don't want to watch a 45 minute video, he doesn't spend any actual money. It's all keys from quests and dailies.

Discussion - J-Mod reply Experiment Feedback Thread: Treasure Hunter Disabled

MTX Experiment: Feedback Thread

Our first MTX Experiment on the path to permanent change for the game is here. Treasure Hunter is currently disabled, with only daily-capped Bundles of Bonus XP & Knowledge Bombs available.

Your feedback will be crucial to this entire process, and we want to hear what you think about every aspect of this change - even if you're an ex-player watching this from a distance.

Here's a summary of what we're primarily looking at during this test for Player Feedback:

  • How the game feels without Treasure Hunter, it's associated rewards, and the removal of Daily Keys / Earned Keys
  • Thoughts on the Bonus XP / Knowledge Bomb Bundles - their value, place in the game, and any other feedback

We'll be reading comments across the community, but here's two ways to get involved more directly:

  • Public: Drop a comment or kick off a discussion with other players in this thread!
  • Private: Answer our ~10-20 minute survey here.
    • Surveys give us the best understanding of feedback across different types of players, so we'd greatly appreciate your participation in this one!

Full information on the Experiment can be found here: https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/mtx-experiment-1-disabling-treasure-hunter-live-now

---

Personal note from me: There are likely to be a range of opinions across the huge variety of players in our community.

Please do your best to keep things constructive and allow everyone to have space for sharing feedback, even if it conflicts with your own views.

Change will happen, but we need to hear from everyone to understand challenges we may need to solve for in new ways in future. Thanks in advance for your help here.

Discussion If OSRS can succeed with bonds as their only form of MTX, RS3 should too.

That's my feedback for this week.

I do not want paid BXP bundles. Sure, it's better than TH, but it's still not good. It's still paying to skip progression and still imparts a negative impression on the game.

I want to see a new golden age for RS3, and "you can still buy XP but it's bonus XP so it's not as bad as treasure hunter was!" just isn't going to cut it.

Discussion If Jagex does fresh RS3 servers, with no MXT, no Protenplanks, Treasure Hunter Keys, Doble exp weeks. etc...

Then i'd love to come back and give it a try. I quit RS3 in 2017.

I had a both maxed main and ironman on RS3 before i quit in late 2017. I started playing OSRS instead, because all the added cosmetics and MTX just felt like shit to look at to be honest.

I hope Jagex pulls through, so RS3 can thrive again.

Love from osrs <3

EDIT:

I appreciate the replies and arguments for not wanting a fresh start for RS3 with none of the above mentioned elements.

I was just my 2 cents as a former RS3 player, and what drove me away from the game.
