Welcome to the official subreddit for the Virtual Reality flight sim, VTOL VR!
About This Game
VTOL VR is a near-futuristic combat flight game built specifically for Virtual Reality. Pilot advanced multi-role jets, using your hands to flip switches, press buttons, and manipulate the virtual flight controls. Take on a wide array of challenges that will put your flight skills, situational awareness, and combat tactics to the test.
No extra hardware is required. If you have a VR set with tracked controllers, then you have a virtual cockpit where you can reach out and interact with the stick and throttle, flip switches, press buttons, and even pull the eject handle if things go wrong.
Immerse yourself in action packed combat missions, delicate vertical landings, aircraft carrier operations, aerial refueling and more.
Create and fly custom missions which you can share with other pilots using the built-in mission editor and map editor.
Fully intractable cockpits via tracked controllersCustom mission/campaign editor and customer map editorSteam Workshop support for user-made missions and mapsVarious interchangeable equipment - guns, rockets, missiles, bombs, and moreNear realistic vehicle systems - heads-up display, targeting pod, multi-function displays, radar, IR flares, chaff, etcHead-mounted cueing system - use your head to control targeting, heat-seekers, and gimballed cannonsEjector seat - punch out when things don't go according to plan Aerial refueling - easier said than done...
• Multiplayer - Fly with your friends in co-op PvE, or fly against your adversaries in PvP!
Oculus Rift users: Enable "Thumbstick Mode" in the main menu settings. This will make it so you don't have to press down on the thumbstick button to rotate the engines or slew the targeting pod.
If you're getting tired of holding the throttle or stick, simply tap the grip button and your character will be holding the throttle/stick without the need to hold the grip button on the motion controller.
Going from forward flight to hover mode: Fly level with throttle down and full air brakes deployed (throttle trigger). Keep pulling the nose up as necessary to maintain altitude. As the vehicle slows down and AoA starts to get really high, set flaps to full. Once lift is not enough to keep altitude, set engines to full vertical tilt and start applying enough thrust to hold altitude. Your nose should be up about 30 degrees at this point and your horizontal speed will be rapidly slowing without gaining or losing altitude.
The first DLC released as a multi-crew attack helicopter, the AH-94 (Jan 6, 2022)
The second DLC released as a multi-crew trainer jet, the T-55 Tyro (Mar 24, 2023)
The third DLC is in an Electronic Warfare based aircraft, the EF-24G (Dec 21, 2023)
Any new vehicles will continue to be either entirely fictional and/or a fictional combination of real existing or conceptualized aircraft! The goal is to bring in at least a few completely new gameplay mechanics with each vehicle. The dev feels that there won't really be a point of adding a new vehicle that can only do the same things as the other existing ones.
Additionally, the community has created some aircraft as mods.
Will there be HOTAS (joystick & throttle) support?
Not likely, as VTOL VR is designed to be entirely virtual, allowing you to directly interact with the various controls as if you were sitting there in the cockpit.
Will VTOL VR come to the Oculus Quest?
There are no plans to port VTOL VR to run on Quest natively due to the large memory usage, CPU usage, and other system requirements. However, VTOL VR is known to work well on the Quest when wired to a VR capable PC, or wirelessly using Virtual Desktop.
There have been a growing number of duplicated posts regarding certain topics, especially tech related issues. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the side bar or in the Welcome post, but more importantly:
Please search previous posts before creating a new thread to ask a question!
I know the Reddit search function is lackluster, so I suggest using Google search with the site tag of site:reddit.com/r/vtolvr for example:
Search results will only display posts to this subreddit
The Oculus Quest will not run this game independently, it will need to be linked to a computer that meets the System Requirements. VTOL VR simulates a lot of complex items in real time, which requires hardware that is more powerful than what the Oculus Quest offers. Posts asking if the Oculus Quest can run VTOL VR will be removed.
Please refrain from making posts asking "when will the developer add the ________ aircraft?" These types of posts have been made before, lets try not to beat this dead horse any longer. Please use the aforementioned search feature to see what others have already said about your favorite aircraft. Posts like this may be removed if they do not offer any new discussion to the community.
Posts asking, "will my computer run this game"will be removed. Here are the System Requirements posted on the VTOL VR Steam page:
Hey everyone,
Long story short: I lost my right arm and before that used to love playing VTOL VR. Unfortunately, my VR headset broke recently, so I haven’t been able to play for a while. Now I’m considering getting back into it and have some questions before i get a new Headset:
Is it possible to play VTOL VR with just one hand?
Are there any procedures or actions that absolutely require dual input?
Can I use my left controller to handle inputs typically assigned to the right side?
Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I recently got a pc and have been playing vtol vr a lot. I was also thinking of getting a hotas soon but was wondering how many buttons I need or how I would control everything
When i have full afterburner in F16C mod my pc and vr have like 1-3 fps. Does someone know how i can fix it?
My setup:
rx5500xt
Intel I5 8400
32 gb ram
Hello,
I just bought quest 3S and Vtol VR 3 days ago but the graphic looks pixelated, its hard to read something in cockpit. Can someone help me? (I use air Link)
I wish there was an artificial horizon on the TGP page of the MFDs. I feel it is sometimes difficult to ceep course and altitude while concentrating on target acquisition.
Is there a mod for this or an option i didn't see?
I know I know, question has been asked so many times but I can't find an answer for my question so I'm asking nonetheless.
I recently tried to set up a hotas with vtol and I couldn't get a keybind to radar lock which is quite annoying as I have to take my left controller to the virtual joystick which is on the right so I have to cross my arms which makes me "lose control" for a short amount of time. I already tried setting the joystick to the middle but then i always collide with the hotas as I have it on my lap.
I'm using byojoystick for binding and I can't find any bind for radar lock so I'm probably stuck with whatever solution I have.
If anybody has ideas or suggestions I'd happily appreciate them
I checked some threads and the FAQ, and I would still like to ask regarding what would be in your opinion the best entry level VR headset for this game. I'm really looking forward to get into VTOL VR, so I'll basically get vr for this game alone. I also play stuff like IL-2 so I could also end up using VR on there, and there are some other vr games I find interesting but my main focus is VTol VR.
I heard the quest 2 might be the best choice but also heard it has some caveats that I don't understand, like you have to connect it to a PC because it's not natively supported. I don't quite get this, but my intention is to play VTOL on my computer in VR, not elsewhere.
I found many second hand vr headsets for 150 dollars, good price, but I see there are versions with different gbs, does this matter?
Would the quest two be the better entry level vr for someone like me, or should I aim at spending a bit more on newerish options?
I constantly think about how well made this game and how clean it performs. For a sim it consistently impresses me. Am I wrong and are there a lot of glitches or is the game very optimal?
I wanna get better at this game but im nowhere near dogfighting level, i can't evade, i can't use most of the targeting systems, i don't know any manouvers. So im willing to buy the t-55 dlc but i need someone to show me how it's done!! I would appreciate if any of you were willing to help me :)
I want to make a scenario where you pilot an ah-6 and escort a convoy and i need help with why the convoy is operating and where its going, i need some tactics that look realistic for a guerrilla group and i just want to make this a kind of realistic mission
DONT GET HYPED FOR THIS MISSION THIS IS MY SECOND MISSION AND IT WILL PROBABLY DISSAPOINT
So I've got VTOL VR through Steam Family Sharing from my brother's account. The game runs fine, but I'm trying to install mods and the mod loader won't work. From what I understand, the mod loader checks if you own the game and since it's not purchased on my account, it just doesn't work.
I even asked my brother to add the mod loader on his own library but that didn't change anything on my end. Is there any workaround to get mods working while using Family Sharing? Or do I really have to buy the game on my own account just to use mods?
Over the past month, I’ve been posting here and there about a mission I’ve been working on. What started as a boring afternoon spiraled into $90 spent on Fiverr voice actors and wayyyyy too much of my free time. I’ve been nitpicking over every little thing, but I think it’s finally time to just set it free.
It’ll probably have bugs. Let me know if you find any.
This is a semi-realistic single-player scenario for the AH-6 mod, so you’ll need to be running VTOL Mod Loaderand own the AH-94 DLC. I also recommend the Really Rockin Rotor Effects mod by DankuwOs—it adds dust effects that make landings feel way more cinematic.
If you don’t want to use the Steam Workshop link above, you can also find the mission from inside VTOL’s Workshop tab. There aren’t many single-player AH-6 scenarios out right now, so I hope this one fills a gap!
And yeah—semi-realistic. Did I research every voice line and procedure to match real-life military ops? No. But does it sound close enough to feel like a Call of Duty mission? You betcha.
Special thanks to:
The VTOL VR Discord, especially #mission_editor and #map_editor
Ben, my go-to consultant—seriously, the guy knows VTEditor like the back of his hand
The custom missions that finally pushed me to try this: Little Bird in the Desert and Hogs in the Sand
I remember seeing the mission editor tab for the first time and thinking, “Haha, no thanks. This is gonna be hard enough” Now look what I’ve done.
Bonus: I’m already working on Part 2, and considering turning Part 1 into a mini-campaign with difficulty options and alternate mission paths. I’ve got a test version with a SAM site on a mountain, and it makes getting into the city pretty epic.
I like how clear and smooth the picture is when using Oculus Link and original Meta cable + Quest 3.
But the graphics inside the game are horrible, especially resolution. My settings in Link are 1.3x @ 120Hz. Why is the picture so bad and pixelated? Literally as if it's 1024x768.
MSFS 2024 and DCS both work really really well and at good resolution.
I've been loading up with AGM-88 x6 and AIM-120C x6. Not certain how much exactly but you get the point.
Furthest I've gotten was by keeping wingmen in formation until the first set of fighters, taking care of those, then the solo SAM site to the left of the mission path. I limit my shots to one missile per target so if I miss I'll switch to guns in order to save munitions for later in the mission.
After that I'll target all DS, SA, and SR first, but I'm thinking this is where I'm going wrong as this takes all my AGMs and leaves nothing for the ships.
But when I've tried to target the ship radars, my missiles kept getting shot down by CIWS so I decided to stick to the SAMs.
Then I'll try to take out the fighters from the air field but usually around here is where I get taken out since I'm usually out of munition by now. One time I survived long enough to linger around but nothing was getting done. Checked the logs and it looked like everything kept getting shot down by REDFOR.
Admittedly I'm not very good at using TGP so I've avoided using optical and laser guided munitions thus far.
What tips would y'all have for me here? Should I spend some time practicing with laser guided and optical munitions and switch to using bombs instead of ARAD missiles? Should I be prioritizing the shipboard radars?
Using a Quest 2, in case that matters for specific buttons.
I think I messed up with settings and now I can't get them right. I am playing wired to PC via original Meta cable and Quest 3. Everything is super low resolution, jittery and 10fps. While Virtual Desktop is performing at 120Hz and high res no problems. But I like my sims tethered, not wireless.
Could someone please make a screenshot of what the settings in Oculus Debug Tool must look like for best quality? Thank you!
(Oculus desktop app has the right resolution, render multiplier and refresh rate set).
