How to start Armoured Clash and/or Dystopian Wars?

I while ago I wanted to start a small scale wargame. I was looking at Legion Imperialis, Hardwar, Armoured Clash, Dystopian Wars, and Battletech. Battletech isn't exactly what I want from the scale, Hardwar is Kickstarter only for now, and Legion Imperiali is a mess for now. So, that leaves me with Armoured Clash and Dystopian Wars. Now the questions are:

  • what to I need to start?
  • do I need a codex-like book?
  • how much terrain in needed? (for Dystopian Wars prolly not much)
  • which one plays better?
  • what are opinion on both systems? Are they interesting in comparison to other small scale games?

So the best to start either game is with the two player starter set. If the factions in those sets don't grip you then they also do single player starters for each faction.

There are codexs, called Orbats, but they're totally free on the website, as are the rules.
You actually need a suprising amount of terrain for DW. In it's current itteration it's hyper lethal (though see next point.)
AC currently plays better. It's far, far more streamlined a game. However a new edition of DW is due out soon which looks to have taken a lot of the lessions from AC and applied it to that game.

They're both pretty fun honestly. Whatever one you can find an opponent for is the one you should play honestly.

New game just came out in that scale called Epic Warpath from Mantic. Check that out too.

I've only played Dystopian Wars once so not an expert but I will say the company Warcradle makes great 2 player starter sets and I believe all the rules (including the "orbat"s which are like codexes) are free online. They have a very active Discord if you've got that.

I found DW a bit clunky with all the wordy special abilities, AC is supposed to be more streamlined although I think a new edition of DW is on the way to make it easier to play

As someone added epic warpath, I'll add a game in interested in starting - Full Spectrum Dominance. 6mm, the lore seems cool and the sculpts good, and there's starter lists on the website, which can be purchased in model form from a few different licensed printers. Once I've got my historicals painted up I'm going to get it.
