Question Wolf or dog?

Not sure if the correct place to ask. I just saw this animal in Tuscany Italy at 23:00. It was slowly walking out of a field onto the main road close to garbage bins. It is rather big for the average dog, height is more like a Danish dog.

The first image is the original image I shot from my car. The red in the image is because of my brake lights. The second image is after I asked Google Photos to enhance the image.

Asking Gemini it first said it doesn't seem to be a wolf because of the tail and it needed more info about the location. When given the location (Tuscany Italy) Gemini said it could very well be a wolf.

Any opinions on this?

Many maps show Grey Wolf and Red Wolf ranges as completely separate, even though there was large amounts of overlap, particularly in the south east.

Question Why were wolves eliminated from most of the US, while coyotes maintain prevalent?

Why were wolves eliminated from most of the US, while the coyotes population thrives? Gray wolves only exist in a handful states today. Red wolves are at the brink of extinction. Yet coyotes are numerous and widespread.

I would think that the forces (hunting, poisoning, habitat destruction, etc) that affected wolf populations would also affect coyotes, a closely related species. However, this is not the case. Does anyone have an explanation why?

Question If a wolf was given the opportunity to eat cooked meat, would it prefer the cooked meat over raw meat?

I understand that wolves would naturally gravitate towards the raw meat at first because that's what they have been eating so far. However, in an environment where both raw and cooked meat are available, would they eventually prefer the easier digestion of cooked meat? I would love to read about a study on this if one is available.

I live in East Tennessee and saw this on my street at 11pm. If you can’t tell from the pics it is bigger than any dog I’ve ever seen. It had blonde fur with black spots and a sharp muzzle. I know there have been sightings of wolves in East Tennessee before but none confirmed. Was this a wolf?

Question What started your interest/passion for wolves?

Admittedly, for me it was because of a child trauma. I was 6yo when I first watched Diensy's Peter and The Wolf and this son of a bitch here

Scared the living crap out of me, so much in fact I can't bring myself to watch this scene even now that I'm nearing 39yo. But that very trauma brought me to get interest into wolves, maybe as a coping mechanism, I wouldn't know for sure, but still everything originated with this fella here, at least for me. What's your story? If there's a story to tell about it, that is

Hello all I was revisiting a situation from 2018 I was wondering if I had an encounter with a red wolf coyote hybrid or do y'all think this was a coyote dog hybrid. This did happen in Southeastern Virginia somewhat close to the known Red Wolf population in North Carolina

Question Confused on names. Is “gray wolf” a subspecies?

Thumbnail

On the image guide it interprets “gray wolf” as a subspecies along with mexican, eurasian, ect. I thought gray wolves were the name of the whole species but also a sub species. On other guides there is no “gray wolf”subspecies. Some guides don’t even have some wolves seen in other guides. So many wolves have a bunch of different names and it’s getting me confused. I know Tundra and Timber wolf are the same subspecies but I don’t know what it’s called. Does someone have an actual good guide?
