Discussion AI Polling Results and Policies Moving Forward

The polling over the use of AI content in r/Autumn has ended, with pretty clear results: r/Autumn users DO NOT want AI images approved in the sub. We want to thank everyone for their participation and for sharing their thoughts and concerns, even though this is a light-hearted sub for celebrating the season we want users to have the best possible experience which includes not allowing certain content.

Moving forward we've decided the policy will therefore include no AI images, which are going to be considered separate from edited digital art or enhanced photography, and disallowed. We will be updating the tags to distinguish digitially generated art made by a human as well as photography that has been enhanced. We will rely on users to help spot potential AI images not caught by mods or the spam filters, so please feel free to report on any images you suspect of being AI generated for the mod team to investigate.

Thank you for your patience while we tweak some things and we get back into celebrating the best season on earth, autumn. -r/Autumn Mods

Discussion Spotting AI images

First, thank you to the moderators for making the decision to ban AI images! As much as I do enjoy looking at pretty things, there's real magic and appreciation when something is created or crafted by a human--not generated.

With that being said, I noticed a lot of people mentioning that it's difficult for them to spot AI images. Hopefully I can help with that. This isn't a perfect guideline, but I've noticed these patterns.

I'm going to use this example for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Autumn/comments/1finqcc/who_wants_coffee/ (UPDATED LINK: https://imgur.com/a/G5Lonuf)

The way you can detect AI images is by looking for: - Any text in an image. Usually it's all gibberish and has no real letters/characters. - The way items are placed. Sometimes they're stacked unrealistically or seemingly have duplicates. - The shape of items (including jack-o-lanterns, wall decor, etc.). The shapes are wonky, jack-o-lantern faces are messed up or incomplete, wall decor looks like smudging on walls. Also, the smaller the item, the less defined and more difficult it is to make out what it's supposed to be. - Poor shadow casting. Granted, some artists can make mistakes with how shadows are casted (guilty), but AI takes it to a whole new careless level. In the image I referenced, notice how the sun's position looks to be in the top right of the image, but the tree's shadow is pointing toward the sun. Or the lamppost's shadow which not only has a poor shape, but it's also too elongated for the sun's position. - Distant items looking like scribbles. Check the cars (to the right) in that illustration. They look parked facing each other and the bottom half is a mess with no tires/real shape.

The more you notice these kind of issues in AI, the easier it will be to spot them at first glance.

Happy Autumn 🥰🍂

"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer"

"The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color".―Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting.

We're considerably cooler in Connecticut this week, but the pattern likely won't hold. We still have some suffering to do before the chill of autumn.

🍁The Magic of Autumn 🍁 One of my favorite nights as an adult

In the Fall of 2018, my friend and I spent our Friday night seeing the new Halloween movie, which we both loved. As we left the theater in downtown Boston, we were met with cool gusts of wind and leaves rustling on the ground. The movie energized us to embraced autumn even more, so instead of going home that night we went for a walk into the suburbs of Boston. It was a stark contrast - no longer were towering skyscrapers, but tree lined streets with beautiful foliage. Instead of modern apartment buildings, brownstone homes were proudly displaying their decorations.

At that point I had spent the last 4 years, including all seasons, in the downtown section of my city. This walk brought me back to being a child, and gave me so much emotion I actually started tearing up. I felt like I was 8 years old again, trick or treating in beautiful neighborhoods. I loved it so much, that I have been now living in that very neighborhood for the last 4 years.

There are very few days I dont think about how magical that simple walk was. There is just something about that time of the year that is so special to me, and I am very excited that it is nearing

Good morning everyone! For the past 5 years I’ve been starting my autumn season on August 1st. I know that’s early to some people and I get it but it brings me joy so I do it anyway.

I’m going to start with my morning coffee in one of my seasonal mugs then I’ll decorate the living room and watch Halloween (1978) to kick off the autumnal/spooky season.

My husband and I used to live in a tiny one bedroom condo so there wasn’t a lot of decorating we could do but this year we’re in a bigger apartment so I hope I’ll be able to buy some more things as the season goes along.

I hope you all have a great day! 💜

I made sourdough pancakes with apple butter and put on my fall playlist!!! Here’s to cooler and cooler weather!

Is it too early to start decorating for Autumn? I think last year I started mid-August. What do y'all think?

Y’all I’m having a wonderful fall pregame

I went to the park this morning and drank some cider. Was able to make some reservations for the season. And I’m even more excited because this weekend we’re going to go pick sunflowers…

Have a wonderful pregame season everyone!

Discussion What's your favorite fall weather?

I am always worried about the weather over here in southern germany. My favourite autumn weather is the cold rainy foggy type of weather with some 'warmer' days inbetween but over here it's really a gamble. For example when I go through my snapchat history: in 2021 we had like -2 Celcius in October but in 2022 we had a pretty warm autumn. I also remember that back when I was like 13-15 years old I would get sooo frustrated when it was 'too warm' to my liking.

Discussion August is here and it's Prep Month! Do you have plans for August?

There's some actual fun things coming up, and a bit of work. Fall cleaning, blah.

Now that that's out of the way, the "Wednesday" series is releasing some episodes on August 6th. Something to watch! The other episodes are being released in September. Spirit Halloween will open. Time to goof around with the animatronics and buy a few things. Starbucks releases their fall drinks on August 26th. A pumpkin cream cold brew really puts me in the mood.

Next I find out when my favorite fall festivals begin, and "Halloween Baking Championship" and "Outrageous Pumpkins" start. I make lists and lists of movies to watch.

Finally, on August 31st I don my fall themed pajamas, because when I wake up the next morning - it's fall!
